As Zereth Mortis is the final zone, access is restricted — you can’t enter without completing several quest chains.
If you’ve played through the Shadowlands expansion and completed the main campaign, your account already has all required achievements, so no additional quest chains are needed. Simply:
- Go to your faction’s portal room.
- Enter the portal to Oribos.
- Go to the second floor of the city and use the yellow portal leading to Zereth Mortis.
If the portal isn’t there, it means the quest chain wasn’t completed (or wasn’t finished). We recommend reviewing each step that unlocks the zone to see where you stopped.
We recommend running the quest chain on an alternate character by selecting the Shadowlands campaign with Chromie. This lets you:
After selecting the timeline with Chromie, you’ll get a story quest in your faction’s capital, launching the Shadowlands campaign. The storylines are fairly straightforward — just follow the quest until you’re prompted to start the next campaign chapter. Note that these quests are lengthy and may take many hours if you complete them all.
You’ll need to complete these key quest chain milestones:
If done correctly, after finishing Korthia’s quest line, a new story quest called Into the Unknown will appear in Oribos, sending you to Zereth Mortis. You’ll need to finish this entire quest chain — simply entering the zone isn’t enough, as you’ll initially be in story mode, limiting access to many activities and the raid.
Throughout these chains, you may be offered the option to skip certain campaign chapters. If you’re not interested in the story or earning achievements/transmogs/mounts awarded during these chapters, you can skip them. In that case, just continue from the next key milestone. We’ve listed all such skip points above for convenience.
Once all chains are completed, a portal to Zereth Mortis will appear in Oribos, letting you access the zone anytime. You can also set your hearthstone in the zone if you plan to visit frequently — for example, when farming Varruuth’s Guillotine (for details on obtaining this rare sword, see our guide).
Even though the expansion launched years ago, flying mounts in this zone are still locked behind specific achievements:
