Blazing Hippogryph
Overview

Blazing Hippogryph is an epic ground and flying mount added in patch 3.3.3 of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. This majestic hippogryph, with feathers of a fiery red hue and wreathed in flames, is one of the most recognizable promotional mounts in World of Warcraft history. Originally, the mount was granted for redeeming a loot card from the Wrathgate set of the WoW TCG.
The mount journal states: "Hippogryphs are highly intelligent, sentient creatures, far more than mere mounts." The TCG card itself bore the inscription: "How can the Scourge hope to escape while the Light now rides on these golden wings?" — words of Durizon, Champion of A'dal. The mount became a symbol of the fight against the Scourge and remains one of the most coveted collectible mounts to this day.
Why You Want This Mount
- Legendary history — the Blazing Hippogryph was the second flying mount offered through the WoW TCG system. Its Wrathgate TCG card had a drop rate of 1 in 264 boosters, making it one of the rarest rewards of its time
- Striking appearance — the mount's feathers blaze with red-orange fire, trailing a fiery wake behind it. The model differs noticeably from the standard night elf hippogryphs and draws attention in any location
- Available via the Trading Post — unlike many TCG mounts, the Blazing Hippogryph periodically appears in the Trading Post rotation for Trader's Tender, making it one of the most accessible former TCG mounts
- Account-wide — once obtained, the mount becomes available to all characters on your account
Requirements
- Character level: 10+
- Riding skill: Apprentice (for ground travel), Expert (for flight)
- Faction: Horde and Alliance
How to Obtain
The Blazing Hippogryph is a promotional mount from the WoW TCG. As of today, there are three ways to acquire it.
Method 1: Trading Post (current)
Starting in May 2024, the Blazing Hippogryph periodically appears in the Trading Post inventory. This is the most accessible and reliable way to get the mount.
- Save up enough Trader's Tender (the mount last cost 650 Trader's Tender)
- Wait for the mount to appear in the inventory. It was last available in February 2026
- Head to the Trading Post in your faction's capital or to Provisioner Mizzix in Dornogal
- Purchase the mount and use the item to learn it
The Trading Post refreshes its inventory monthly. The Blazing Hippogryph does not appear every month, but it returns to the inventory regularly.
Method 2: WoW TCG Loot Card (historical)
The mount was originally granted for redeeming the Blazing Hippogryph loot card from the Wrathgate set.
- Purchase a Blazing Hippogryph loot card on the secondary market (eBay, specialized TCG card shops)
- Scratch off the protective layer on the card to reveal the 25-digit promo code
- Go to the Blizzard promo code redemption page and enter the code
- Receive an in-game code to redeem from an NPC
- Find Landro Longshot on the dock at Booty Bay (Cape of Stranglethorn)
- In the dialogue, select the "Wrathgate" set and enter the code you received
- Collect the mount from Landro
The WoW TCG was officially discontinued in 2013. No new codes are produced, but unactivated cards still occasionally sell on the secondary market for prices ranging from $150 to $500 USD.
Method 3: Twitch Drop (promotional, ended)
In May 2023, to celebrate the release of Dragonflight patch 10.1, Blizzard gave away the Blazing Hippogryph as a Twitch drop. To obtain it, you had to watch at least 4 hours of WoW streams between May 9 and 17, 2023. This promotion has ended and no repeat has been announced.
Mount History
The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG) was published by Upper Deck Entertainment, and later Cryptozoic Entertainment, from 2006 to 2013. Special loot cards with promo codes for exclusive in-game items could be found in the card game's boosters.
The Wrathgate set was released in 2009 and was dedicated to the events of the Battle for the Undercity — one of the key moments of the campaign against the Lich King. The Blazing Hippogryph became the set's headline reward — it was only the second flying mount in WoW TCG history. The card appeared in roughly one out of every 264 boosters, making it extremely rare.
After the WoW TCG closed in 2013, the mount became virtually unobtainable. Unactivated cards sold on eBay for $1,000–1,900 USD. In May 2023, Blizzard unexpectedly gave away the mount as a Twitch drop, significantly reducing its rarity and upsetting former owners. Since May 2024, the mount has appeared in the Trading Post inventory, finally becoming available to a wide audience.
Trading Post — Details
The Trading Post is a monthly reward system introduced in Dragonflight patch 10.0.5. Each month, cosmetic items, mounts, and pets appear in the inventory, which can be purchased with Trader's Tender.
How to Earn Trader's Tender
- Monthly activity bar — complete various in-game tasks (dungeons, PvP, quests, professions) to fill the activity bar. Filling it completely rewards 500 Trader's Tender
- Bonus chest — once a month you can claim 500 Trader's Tender from a special chest in the capital (a subscription is required for this)
- Carryover — unspent Tender carries over to the next month
Trading Post Locations
- Alliance: Stormwind, near the Mage Quarter (next to the prison)
- Horde: Orgrimmar, Valley of Wisdom
- Dornogal: Provisioner Mizzix near the vault
The mount cost 800 Trader's Tender in May 2024 and 650 Trader's Tender in February 2026. The price may change at its next appearance.
Tips
1
The Trading Post is the best way — don't spend hundreds of dollars on a TCG card. Wait for the mount to appear in the Trading Post inventory and buy it with Trader's Tender. The mount has already appeared twice (May 2024 and February 2026) and will surely return again
2
Save up Trader's Tender — if you want the Blazing Hippogryph, start saving Tender in advance. The mount's maximum cost is 800 Tender. Two months of filling the activity bar guarantee a sufficient amount
3
Watch the rotation — Blizzard announces the Trading Post inventory at the start of each month. Follow news resources (Wowhead, Icy Veins) so you don't miss the mount's return
4
Bind on use — before activation, the mount item can be passed to another character on your account. Once used, it binds to the account permanently
5
Counts toward achievements — the mount counts toward mount collecting achievements. Each new mount brings you closer to the rewards for the number of mounts collected
6
The Twitch drop may return — Blizzard has already run a similar promotion in 2023. Follow announcements on official channels — the mount may once again appear as a drop with the release of new content

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
