Overview

Gahz'rilla Fang

Gahz'rilla Fang is a one-handed dagger of uncommon quality, looted from the classic dungeon Zul'Farrak. The weapon model takes the form of a massive cream-colored beast fang, fixed in a simple leather wrap at the base. This item stopped being relevant for its stats long ago, but its unusual silhouette and its link to one of the oldest bosses in the game make it a coveted prize for transmog collectors.

The dagger is item level 83 and binds when picked up. Its stats include agility and stamina, along with the "Gahz'rilla Fang" effect: melee attacks have a chance to surround the wielder with an electric field that deals minor Nature damage to nearby enemies over 15 seconds. The effect is purely cosmetic by modern standards, but it nicely underscores the weapon's theme — it drops from a hydra that strikes heroes with lightning.

Source

The dagger drops from only one enemy in the entire game — Gahz'rilla, an elite hydra in the Zul'Farrak dungeon.

  • Gahz'rilla is an optional boss; she does not appear during a normal run of the dungeon.
  • To summon her, you need to use the Mallet of Zul'Farrak on the altar in the far cave of the dungeon.
  • The mallet is assembled from the Sacred Mallet at the altar of Jintha'Alor in the Hinterlands zone of the Eastern Plaguelands; the Sacred Mallet is obtained through a classic quest chain in Tanaris.
  • The drop chance for the dagger from Gahz'rilla is around 36%, one of the most generous classic transmog drops.
  • There is no limit on the number of visits; the dungeon can be re-entered without restriction.
  • Loot contents are individual for each player in the group and are not shared — everyone gets their own roll.

At max level the dungeon can be cleared solo by any class in 5–10 minutes. Most of the path from the entrance to Gahz'rilla's pyramid is an open stretch of the troll city with large clusters of mobs, which are convenient to gather into dense packs and kill with area abilities.

Who It Suits Visually

  • Looks great in "savage" and "monster hunter" sets with rough leather armor and hides.
  • Fits the troll theme and tribal looks: ornaments of bone and feathers, coarse fabrics in sandy tones.
  • Harmonizes with armor from Zul'Farrak itself and other classic Kalimdor dungeons thanks to the shared sun-bleached palette.
  • Contrasts with heavy plate and dark gothic armor — a debatable but striking choice for a "wandering hunter" or "witch doctor" look.
  • Suits a rogue or druid among the dagger-wielding specializations, especially in sets with light armor and a nature theme.

Tips

1

Before entering, make sure you have the inv_hammer_19Mallet of Zul'Farrak — without it, Gahz'rilla simply will not appear.

2

The mallet binds when equipped, so it is convenient to obtain it once through the quest chain and, after using it, put it back in the bank for future runs.

3

At max level the dungeon is cleared most efficiently by classes with strong AoE: monk, paladin, mage, demon hunter.

4

The chance for the dagger is high but not guaranteed — plan on 2–5 runs to get the item with high probability.

5

The fight with Gahz'rilla drops several unique transmog items, so it makes sense to finish her off several times even after getting the dagger.

6

The dungeon is located in Zul'Farrak in the northeastern part of the Tanaris desert; the easiest way to get there is via a portal from Orgrimmar or Stormwind and then by mount.

7

Below level 60, killing ordinary mobs in the dungeon takes a long time; for transmog farming it is more convenient to use a max-level character.

8

Loot binds personally, so in a group with friends everyone gets their own chance at the drop; gathering a group of three to five players increases the overall odds per run.
