Colossal Wraithbound Mawrat
Overview

Spectral Mawrat's Tail is an epic item that teaches you to summon the
Colossal Wraithbound Mawrat. This is a ground mount added in patch 9.2.0 "Eternity's End". The item drops from Mawsworn Supply Chests — containers scattered across the desert part of Zereth Mortis.
The Colossal Wraithbound Mawrat is one of five giant rat mounts added in patch 9.2.0. It stands out with its spectral turquoise-gray coloring and semi-transparent texture. As described in-game: "These creatures have gorged themselves on the energy of tormented souls and have become wraith-like themselves – illusory and elusive."
Why you want this mount
- Rarity and prestige — the drop chance from a chest is roughly 0.5%, which makes the mount fairly rare. Among collectors, the rat is valued for its unusual model and spectral effect.
- Unique appearance — it is the only spectral rat among the Maw mounts. Its semi-transparent body with glowing turquoise veins sets it apart from other mounts.
- Endless farming — unlike mounts with a weekly limit, Mawsworn Supply Chests can be opened without any cap. You are not tied to a lockout reset and can farm for as long as your patience holds out.
- Available on all characters — once learned, the mount appears in your account-wide collection.
How to reach Zereth Mortis
Zereth Mortis is a zone from patch 9.2.0 of the Shadowlands expansion. Your first visit requires completing a short quest chain.
First character
- Get to Oribos — use the portal from your faction's capital or a hearthstone.
- Choose any covenant if you haven't already, and complete the first two chapters of its campaign.
- Pick up the quest "First Strike", which leads you to Korthia.
- Complete the story quests up through "Secrets Within", then return to Oribos.
- Take the quest "The Primus Returns" and finish the intro chain — you will arrive in Zereth Mortis.
- After completing "The Last Sigil" in Oribos, a permanent portal to Zereth Mortis opens.
Alternate characters
If at least one character on your account has already completed the campaign, alts gain the option to skip the first three chapters. Talk to Tal-Inara in Oribos after choosing a covenant — she will offer to send you straight to Zereth Mortis.
Quick access
The portal to Zereth Mortis is located on the second floor of Oribos. Use the yellow portal to travel there.
Step-by-step guide to obtaining it
- Get to Zereth Mortis via the portal in Oribos
- Unlock flying in the zone by completing the Unlocking the Secrets achievement — this is not mandatory, but it greatly speeds up farming, since many chests sit in hard-to-reach spots.
- Head to the desert (western and northwestern) part of Zereth Mortis — that is where most of the Mawsworn Supply Chest spawn points are located.
- Find and open chests, moving along a route from one cluster of points to the next.
- If the
Spectral Mawrat's Tail drops — use the item to learn the mount.
Chest coordinates
Mawsworn Supply Chests spawn at 30+ fixed points across all of Zereth Mortis. The main clusters are listed below.
Pyramid and Antecedent Island area
Northern desert area
Central and western part
Southern points

Chest spawn timing
Mawsworn Supply Chests spawn independently of one another. Each point has its own respawn timer — from 5 minutes to 1.5 hours. After one player opens a chest, other characters may still be able to open it within 1–2 minutes before it disappears.
Optimal route
The highest concentration of chests is around the pyramid (coordinates 59–67, 19–33) and in the northern desert (coordinates 44–52, 1–12). Recommended order:
- Start with the cluster of points by the pyramid — there are roughly 10 spawn points in relatively close proximity here
- Fly north to the desert area — about 12 more points
- Check the western and southern points
- Return to the pyramid and repeat the loop
One full loop takes 5–10 minutes when you have flying.
Server hopping
An effective way to speed up farming is to use Group Finder groups to swap game worlds. Join groups for world bosses or rare enemies in Zereth Mortis — after transferring to another server, the chests at the same points may turn out to be unopened.
Estimating the number of attempts
With a drop chance of ~0.5%, statistically you will need to open about 200 chests. According to player reports, the real numbers range from 50 to 600+ openings. At a pace of 20–30 chests per hour (with flying and server hopping), expect 7–10 hours of farming. Luck can both shorten and lengthen this time.
Which class to farm on
There are no special class requirements — you simply fly around and open chests. Any level 80 character can handle it. Druids gain a slight edge thanks to their instant flight form and the ability to loot items without shifting forms.
Other rat mounts from patch 9.2.0
In addition to the Colossal Wraithbound Mawrat, patch 9.2 added four more giant rats:
| Mount | Source |
|---|---|
| Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 4 | |
| Drops from Iski the Direrider — a rare enemy in Zereth Mortis (63.9, 25.4) | |
| Drops from the final boss of Floor 5 or 7 of Torghast (level 13+) | |
| Drops from the final boss of Floor 5 of Torghast (level 12+) |
Tips
1
Unlock flying first thing — without it, farming becomes a chore. Chests often spawn on top of cliffs and in other hard-to-reach spots. The "Unlocking the Secrets" achievement unlocks flying in Zereth Mortis.
2
Install a tracking addon — addons like HandyNotes: Zereth Mortis or TomTom will help mark all known chest spawn points on your map. You'll always see where to fly next.
3
Farm alongside other goals — while hunting for chests, kill rare enemies along the way. Iski the Direrider can drop another rat mount — the Colossal Plaguespew Mawrat.
4
Use the Shadowy Gateways — Zereth Mortis has teleports (Shadowy Gateways and jump pads) that help you move quickly between distant points.
5
Check the points right after a server restart — after the weekly maintenance, all chests are guaranteed to respawn. The first 20–30 minutes after the restart are the best time to farm.
