Overview

Flaming Quartz Staff

Flaming Quartz Staff is a two-handed staff from The Burning Crusade expansion that arrived with patch 2.1. Its head is assembled from dark apexis crystals, which makes the whole staff seem to smolder from within. The silhouette is massive yet not bulky, and the orange-crimson glow makes it stand out even from a distance.

In terms of stats this is a caster staff — it carries intellect, stamina, and critical strike rating, so it is meant for mages, priests, shamans, druids, and warlocks. But these days people take it not for the stats: its item level has long been irrelevant, while the warm crystalline model remains one of the most distinctive among the staves of Outland and readily fits into fiery and "druidic" looks.

The main feature of the item is the way you obtain it. This is not an ordinary drop: a "blank" falls into the world, and you finish it yourself, saturating it with the energy of crystals. That is why the path to the staff is tied to farming the currency of the Blade's Edge ogres.

Source

The Flaming Quartz Staff does not drop directly. First you need to obtain the blank — the Depleted Staff — and then charge it with apexis shards.

  • The Depleted Staff is an item you can equip, and it has no bind-on-pickup. It drops from elite and regular creatures on the floating plateaus of Blade's Edge in Outland, which can only be reached by air.
  • Since the blank is not soulbound, it is often put up for sale at the auction house. If you would rather not farm it yourself, it is easier to buy it there and save time.
  • To charge it you need 50 of the Apexis Shard. The shards drop from almost every creature in the Blade's Edge area, lie around as crystalline clusters right on the ground, and are also awarded for the ogre faction's daily quests.
  • Once you have the depleted staff and fifty shards in hand, activate the item — it will absorb the shards and turn into the Flaming Quartz Staff.

The entire process is fully soloable: the content is outdated by many expansions, and the ordinary mobs of Blade's Edge pose no threat at the current level. The only things required are a flying mount to reach the plateaus and the patience to gather the needed number of shards.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It suits fiery looks: the warm amber glow of the head echoes the effects of fire magic and red-orange cloth sets.
  • It fits well into "crystalline" and "druidic" concepts thanks to the rough stone-mineral texture of the shaft.
  • It looks striking against dark outfits — the crimson glow plays the role of the single bright accent in a monochrome look.
  • It harmonizes with gold-and-bronze armor: the warm palette of the staff does not clash with metallic shades but complements them.

Tips

1

First find the depleted staff, and only then finish gathering the shards: the blank drops more rarely, and there is no point in hoarding currency without having the base in hand.

2

If farming the blank drags on, check the auction house — the item is not soulbound and is often sold there at a reasonable price.

3

Shards are most convenient to gather along the way: they drop from literally every mob in the area, so a separate grind for them is usually not needed.

4

The Blade's Edge ogre daily quests give 15 shards each — three or four days of quests fully cover the need for 50 shards.

5

Bring a flying mount with you: the Blade's Edge plateaus are accessible only from the air, you cannot climb up there on foot.

6

If you are collecting other items from this line in parallel, farm shards in reserve — each blank needs exactly 50 of them.
