Overview

Ironclad Frostclaw

Ironclad Frostclaw is an Alliance ground mount added to World of Warcraft in patch 8.1.5 "Tides of Vengeance" of the Battle for Azeroth expansion. It is an armored snow-white wolf, captured in the snows of Alterac Valley and saddled in the colors of the Alliance war campaign. The mount is granted as a pair to the Horde's Bloodflank Charger — both items arrive as a gift for the same account-wide meta-achievement.

The only way to get the wolf is to complete the meta-achievement Two Sides to Every Tale. You must finish the Battle for Azeroth storylines on Kul Tiras and in Zandalar for both factions, as well as the patch 8.1 war campaigns. Once the final condition is closed, the mount arrives by in-game mail to an Alliance character; the Horde character on the same account simultaneously receives the Bloodflank Charger.

Why you want this mount

  • Unique wolf model — white fur with a thick coat and solid plated armor bearing the lion's crest. The only "white wolf" of this build in the game, with a model that does not overlap with the standard orcish wolves
  • Faction-exclusive — the mount is not available to the Horde directly. It can only be obtained on an Alliance character, which makes the collection distinctive
  • Achievement points and side rewards — on the way to the mount you build up reputation with the 7th Legion and the Honorbound, close out the storyline of a sundered Azeroth, and unlock access to the Kul Tiran and Zandalari allied races
  • Speed 10 out of 10 — the mount receives a +60% or +100% movement speed bonus depending on your riding skill, meaning it travels at the maximum speed of ground transport
  • Available account-wide — once obtained, the wolf appears in the collection of every Alliance character on the account, while the Horde uses the paired charger

How to obtain

The entire path to the mount comes down to a single meta-achievement — Two Sides to Every Tale. It consists of four component achievements: two storyline achievements for each faction's continent and two patch 8.1 "Tides of Vengeance" war campaigns.

  1. Create or use two characters on a single account: one for the Alliance, one for the Horde. Both should be at maximum level or close to it for comfortable progression
  2. On the Alliance, complete the Kul Tiras storyline and close out the achievement A Nation United
  3. On the Horde, complete the Zandalar storyline and close out the achievement Zandalar Forever!
  4. On both characters, finish the 8.0 war campaign — it unlocks the patch storyline
  5. Complete the 8.1 war campaign Tides of Vengeance for both factions. This is the final part of the meta-achievement
  6. As soon as the last item is closed — the Alliance character receives mail with the Ironclad Frostclaw, while the Horde gets the Bloodflank Charger

You can only move on to the patch chapters after you complete the base 8.0 war campaign — the updated "Tides of Vengeance" campaign begins from the final chapter in your faction's headquarters.

Preparing for the run

In 2026, the entire Battle for Azeroth storyline runs perfectly solo at maximum level. However, the preparatory steps are still worth completing so you don't stumble at the start.

  • Make sure you have an Alliance character and a Horde character on a single game account. Races and classes don't matter
  • Both characters must accept the invitation from the faction leaders and sail to Zandalar (Horde) or Kul Tiras (Alliance). The introductory quests are picked up in Stormwind City and Orgrimmar respectively
  • With level scaling, the BfA storyline remains accessible at any level from 10. But it is genuinely comfortable to play at level 70+, when the character's abilities are already developed
  • For the duration of the run, enable scaling to level 60 — this way you blast through the story and gain adequate experience

Alliance storyline — A Nation United

The meta-achievement A Nation United requires closing the three zone storylines of Kul Tiras. The recommended order is dictated by the in-game hint, but any sequence is allowed.

  1. Fly into Boralus and pick up the first quest from the Alliance leaders at the central docks
  2. Complete the Tiragarde Sound storyline — this is the key branch around House Proudmoore and the admiralty
  3. Move on to Stormsong Valley and close out the story of the Tidesages
  4. Wrap up the story arc in Drustvar, where the confrontation with the witch coven and House Waycrest is brought to its finale
  5. After closing the third zone storyline you will receive A Nation United — one of the four building blocks of the meta

Horde storyline — Zandalar Forever!

The structurally similar meta-achievement for the Horde is Zandalar Forever!. It covers three zones of Zandalar.

  1. Land in Dazar'alor from Orgrimmar and pick up the introductory quests from the Horde leaders
  2. Complete the Zuldazar storyline — the political intrigue around King Rastakhan and the Zandalari dynasty
  3. Move to Nazmir and close out the branch around the blood cult of the gods and the battle with the spawn of the Old Ones
  4. Wrap up the story arc in Vol'dun, the desert zone of the vulpera tribe and the sethrak
  5. Having earned all three zone storylines, you will close out Zandalar Forever! and the second part of the meta

War campaign 8.0 — the foundation

The 8.0 war campaign is a separate storyline run in parallel with the zones. It is precisely what unlocks the patch 8.1 chapters and the reputation progress with the 7th Legion or the Honorbound.

  1. In Boralus or Dazar'alor, find the war campaign headquarters — the ship "Wind's Redemption" (Alliance) or "Banshee's Wail" (Horde). There stands a command table from which missions and campaign chapters are launched
  2. Take chapters from the faction leaders as your overall progress increases
  3. Chapters open gradually — if the next stage requires a certain level or reputation, finish up the zone storyline
  4. Complete all chapters of the 8.0 war campaign — this is the access requirement for patch 8.1

Tides of Vengeance — the final part

The patch 8.1 war campaign Tides of Vengeance is the last building block of the meta-achievement. The chapters arrive through the in-game command table at the war campaign headquarters.

  1. Open the 8.0 war campaign headquarters after completing all chapters of the base campaign
  2. Take the first chapter of patch 8.1 "Tides of Vengeance" from the faction leader
  3. The chapters proceed sequentially — some steps were originally tied to the weekly reset, so completing the campaign can stretch over several weeks. Check the current conditions for moving between chapters on wowhead
  4. Complete all 8.1 chapters on the Alliance character, then on the Horde character
  5. As soon as the last chapter closes — your account receives Two Sides to Every Tale and both mounts arrive by in-game mail

Optimizing the run

Order of operations

Working with two characters in parallel is most effective if you progress them not simultaneously but one at a time. The BfA storyline solo at maximum level is roughly 10–15 hours per faction at a measured pace.

  1. First fully close the entire campaign on the Alliance character — the Kul Tiras zones, the 8.0 war campaign, "Tides of Vengeance"
  2. Then switch to the Horde, complete the Zandalar zones and repeat the war campaigns
  3. On the Horde step the progress will go faster — you already know the mechanics and routes
  4. After finishing the Horde, the meta-achievement closes automatically and the mail arrives

Which class is more convenient

For a solo run of old content, any class works in 2026. But there are classes that speed up the run thanks to mobility or survivability:

  • Demon Hunter — the double jump and gliding cut down travel time between quests
  • Monk — high movement speed and durability speed up the zone storyline
  • Druid — travel forms and instant role swapping for any mechanics
  • Paladin — high survivability in case you get caught in mass battles

Speeding up the war campaigns

  • Part of the 8.1 war campaign chapters were historically tied to the weekly reset — plan for a full run to take 2–4 weeks of calendar time
  • If you're stuck on a chapter — check whether additional reputation with the Honorbound or the 7th Legion is required. Reputation can be topped up through daily quests and world quests in Boralus or Dazar'alor
  • At maximum level 90, all scenarios and tasks of the war campaigns are completed solo without difficulty

Tips

1

Start with the Alliance — if you only have one high-level Alliance character, fully close out its story first. Then it will be clear how long a faction takes, and you can plan the Horde

2

Use quest streaming — open the quest log and accept all available quests in a zone at once, then complete them in a batch. This way the story goes 2–3 times faster than doing one quest at a time

3

Don't skip the 8.0 war campaign — without it, patch 8.1 is unavailable. Many players forget about it because the command table is no longer used in newer expansions

4

Track progress through the achievements panel — open Two Sides to Every Tale in the achievements window and see which building blocks are already closed. This is more convenient than keeping the list in your head

5

The paired mount arrives automatically — you don't need to do anything separately for the Horde besides completing the story. The Bloodflank Charger will arrive on the Horde character at the same moment as the Ironclad Frostclaw on the Alliance character

6

Don't buy paid carries on a dungeon ID — the war campaign and zone storylines are fully accessible on old content without a group. Any player can close them out on their own over a couple of weekends

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
