Overview

Reins of the Bone-White Primal Raptor

Game iconReins of the Bone-White Primal Raptor is an epic ground mount added in patch 5.2 of the Mists of Pandaria expansion. It is a snow-white primal raptor with a purple belly and stripes, reminiscent of the legendary raptor from the early days of the game. The mount is awarded for completing the quest A Mountain of Giant Dinosaur Bones, which requires you to collect 9,999 Game iconGiant Dinosaur Bones and turn them in to the troll Ku'ma on the Isle of Giants.

The Isle of Giants is a zone north of Kun-Lai Summit in Pandaria, populated by the elite dinosaurs of the Zandalari trolls. Here you will find primal devilsaurs, direhorns, skyscreamers, and the Zandalari dinomancers themselves. Every mob you kill is guaranteed to drop Giant Dinosaur Bones, and the number of bones depends on the size and strength of the enemy.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Guaranteed acquisition — no RNG and no percentage drop chances. You collect the bones, turn in the quest, and get the mount. Everything depends solely on your persistence
  • Unique appearance — a white primal raptor with purple stripes and eyes. The model is reminiscent of the legendary Ivory Raptor that was removed from sale back in the days of classic WoW
  • Achievement included — completing the quest rewards the great feat I've Got 9999 Problems but a Bone-White Primal Raptor Ain't One, showcasing your dedication
  • Available to all characters — once learned, the mount becomes available on every character on your account
  • Bones can be bought on the Auction House — starting with patch 6.0.2, Giant Dinosaur Bones became tradable, so if you wish you can buy them on the Auction House instead of farming them yourself

How to Obtain

To get the mount you must collect 9,999 Giant Dinosaur Bones and turn them in to Ku'ma on the Isle of Giants.

  1. Reach the Isle of Giants (more in the section below)
  2. Find Ku'ma in the cave on the western side of the island (coordinates 32.6, 54.6)
  3. Pick up the quest A Mountain of Giant Dinosaur Bones
  4. Farm the dinosaurs on the island, collecting Giant Dinosaur Bones from every mob you kill
  5. Once you have gathered 9,999 bones, return to Ku'ma and turn in the quest
  6. Receive the Game iconReins of the Bone-White Primal Raptor and use the item to learn the mount

How to Reach the Isle of Giants

The Isle of Giants is located north of Kun-Lai Summit in Pandaria. The zone is a no-fly area — you will have to land at the shore.

First Visit

  1. Head to Pandaria. Use the portal from your faction's capital to the Temple of the Jade Serpent (Alliance) or Honeydew Village (Horde), or the portal to the Temple of the White Tiger
  2. Reach Kun-Lai Summit — any flight point in the northern part of the zone will do, such as Zouchin Village
  3. Fly on a flying mount due north from the coast of Kun-Lai Summit across the open sea
  4. Cross the stretch of fatigue water — the flight takes about 30 seconds. Near the island's shore lies the Misty Shore zone, which automatically dismounts you
  5. Swim to the shore and find the flight master on the southern beach of the island

Quick Access (After Unlocking)

After your first visit, flight masters appear on the island's southern shore:

  • Alliance — flight master at Bilrog's Wreckage on the southern shore
  • Horde — flight master at Bozzle's Wreckage on the southern shore

Both are connected to Zouchin Village and the shrines in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Once the flight point is unlocked, you can travel directly.

Bone Drops from Mobs

All dinosaurs and Zandalari mancers on the Isle of Giants are guaranteed to drop Giant Dinosaur Bones. The number of bones depends on the type of mob.

Mob Bones per kill Note
Primal Devilsaur 35–45 Elite, largest drop
Primal Direhorn 18–22 Elite, medium drop
Skyscreamer 15–17 Elite, flying
Young Primal Devilsaur 11–13 Elite, smaller
Primal Direhorn Hatchling 7–9 Elite, compact
Zandalari Dinomancer 1–2 Humanoid, minimal drop

Additional Drops

Besides bones, the dinosaurs may drop a Game iconPrimal Egg — a rare item that hatches after three days into one of three raptor mounts: a black, green, or red primal raptor. Keep an eye out for this bonus while farming.

Efficient Bone Farming

Optimal Strategy

At max level (90 in Midnight), all elite dinosaurs on the Isle of Giants are killed in seconds. The optimal approach:

  1. Prioritize large mobs — Primal Devilsaurs give 35–45 bones per kill, which is 5 times more efficient than small dinosaurs. Start your route with them
  2. Circular route around the island — move along the perimeter of the island, killing all dinosaurs in your path. By the time you finish the loop, the mobs at the start of the route have already respawned
  3. Don't ignore the small fry — while running between large mobs, kill direhorn hatchlings and young devilsaurs. Every 7–13 bones add up
  4. Avoid the Zandalari mancers — 1–2 bones per kill make them the least efficient target. Only kill them if they are in your way

Group Farming

Bones are not split among group members — each player receives the full drop from every mob. Farming in a group speeds up the process significantly:

  • The tank gathers large packs of mobs
  • DPS quickly destroy the assembled group
  • All participants receive the same number of bones

Skinning as a Bonus

If your character has the Skinning profession, all dinosaurs on the island can be skinned and yield 2 Exotic Leather each. Over the course of farming 9,999 bones, you will accumulate a significant amount of leather to sell on the Auction House.

Buying on the Auction House

Starting with patch 6.0.2, Giant Dinosaur Bones became tradable. If you have gold and no desire to farm, check the Auction House — bones are sometimes sold at reasonable prices. Bones stack in stacks of 999.

How Long It Will Take

The farming time depends on your character's level and gear:

  • At max level (90) — 2 to 4 hours solo, elite mobs die instantly
  • In a group at max level — 1 to 2 hours with coordinated farming
  • At content level (50–60) — 6 to 12 hours, depending on class and gear

Other Rewards from Ku'ma

Ku'ma accepts bones for more than just the mount. While saving up for the raptor, you can spend the surplus on other rewards:

Reward Cost
Game iconReins of the Bone-White Primal Raptor 9,999 bones
Game iconSpectral Porcupette (battle pet) 999 bones

Tips

1

Use a character with AoE — classes with powerful area damage (mage, warlock, demon hunter) speed up farming significantly, letting you quickly wipe out groups of mobs

2

Don't forget about Primal Eggs — while farming bones, watch for drops of the inv_egg_03Primal Egg. After three days it hatches into one of three colored raptors — a nice bonus to the main farm

3

Beware of OondastaOondasta is a world boss on the island, a huge devilsaur. At max level he poses no threat, but if you are lower level, stay away from him

4

Bones are account-wide — Giant Dinosaur Bones can be transferred between characters via mail. Farm on whichever character is most convenient and mail the bones to your main

5

Check the Auction House regularly — bone prices fluctuate. Sometimes players list large stacks at a low price, letting you save hours of farming

6

Combine with other goals — while farming on the Isle of Giants, you can also hunt rare mobs for pet drops and kill Oondasta for achievements along the way

7

The mount is ground-only — keep in mind that the Bone-White Primal Raptor does not fly. It is purely a ground mount, but with a striking appearance and a testament to your persistence

8

The flight point saves time — be sure to unlock the flight master on the island's southern shore during your first visit. This will let you return here instantly in the future without the tedious flight across the open sea

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
