It answers one question: does your character survive a single hit of the chosen ability. It takes the base damage, applies the key level multiplier and the affix, subtracts your damage reduction, versatility and absorbs, and shows the health left over or the overkill.

No. Install the Not Even Close addon, press its button in game and paste the export: your stats, talents and buffs are filled in automatically. You can paste anywhere on the page with Ctrl+V, and a party export fills in every character at once.
Versatility and avoidance are raw ratings from the character sheet, not percentages. Stamina, armor and the primary stat are the totals with all your buffs already applied, so the calculator does not add raid buffs twice.
Group buffs, group cooldowns and externals change your health pool and damage reduction, so the same hit can be lethal or harmless depending on what your party brings. Toggle only what will actually be up when the ability lands.
