Protection Paladin
Protection Paladin
This is a tank whose main stat is Strength. In combat, the Protection Paladin uses a one-handed weapon (axes, swords) and a shield. The defining mechanic of this tank is building up Holy Power to fuel abilities. Some abilities generate Holy Power, while others consume it.
Strengths
- A large selection of defensive abilities for both yourself and the group, such as
Blessing of Sacrifice and
Blessing of Protection. - Provides a group-wide 3% damage reduction through an aura.
- Complete damage immunity thanks to
Divine Shield. - Able to interrupt casts on a large number of enemies, and often.
Weaknesses
- Damage and survivability depend heavily on rotation, because the core abilities require the Holy Power resource, and it is crucial to generate and spend it at the right moments.
- Low mobility.
- A simple and rather repetitive rotation, which can feel boring to some players.
- Requires maintaining an incoming damage reduction buff that costs Holy Power, which can be inconvenient for beginners.

Best in Slot
Don't forget to explore our class pages, where not only the best items in the slot are available, but also other alternatives for any class, spec or situation:
Enchants, Gems, Consumables
Leveling
The core abilities for dealing damage are available to you from the very first level. Use
Avenger's Shield and
Blessed Hammer /
Hammer of the Righteous.
As you level up, you will gain new abilities. We recommend sticking to the ability priority from the rotation section.
Mythic+ Tips
1
In addition to your main interrupt, use
Hammer of Justice to stun/interrupt a single target, and
Blinding Light for AoE interrupts.
2
Some slows and movement-impairing effects can be removed with
Blessing of Freedom. In many dungeons, enemies apply damaging slows to you and your allies, so be sure to cast this ability on yourself and your teammates.
3
If a member of your group dies during combat and you urgently need to resurrect them, use
Intercession to bring them back into the fight. > Battle resurrections share a global 10-minute cooldown. Charges accumulate every 10 minutes, so the longer you are in the dungeon, the more charges you will have available. You can resurrect several allies in a row if you have enough charges stored.
