MoP Classic Fire Mage — Guide (Phase 5)
About the Class
Fire Mage is a specialization that lives on critical strikes. The whole point of the playstyle is to chain-roll
Heating Up and
Pyroblast! and build the fattest possible
Ignite.
The resource is mana, but in a raid Fire basically never worries about it. It is a ranged DPS with steady single-target damage, excellent damage on two or three targets by spreading Ignite via
Inferno Blast, and a huge burst in the
Combustion window.
Strengths
- Huge burst potential through
Combustion. - Good, steady single-target damage.
- Strong two-to-three target damage:
Inferno Blast spreads Ignite and Pyroblast. - Mana is not a problem at all.
- Plenty of defensive tools, including
Cauterize. - Noticeably more mobile than Arcane thanks to instant procs and
Scorch.
Weaknesses
- Heavily gear-dependent and lags behind for much of the expansion because of it.
- Damage is spiky and entirely tied to crit luck.
- A poorly timed Combustion on a weak Ignite burns the whole cooldown.
- Requires constant proc tracking, which is hard during heavy movement.
Stat Priority
- 1Intellect
- 2Hit and Expertise (up to the 15% cap, which is 5100 rating)
- 3Critical Strike rating
- 4Haste
- 5Mastery
In Mists of Pandaria, Expertise also grants Hit, so both stats are interchangeable up to the cap. Draenei need 4760 rating instead of 5100.
