Overview

Cobalt Riding Talbuk (Alliance)

Game iconReins of the Cobalt Riding Talbuk is an Alliance ground mount added to World of Warcraft with the The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a slender dark-blue talbuk with light stripes on its hide and light leather tack — the "riding" rather than the "war" version of the talbuk, so it wears no armor. It is one of the four riding talbuks of the Kurenai faction, sold by Trader Narasu in Telaar.

The mount is sold only for Exalted reputation with the Kurenai and costs 70 gold. The faction is available exclusively to Alliance characters: the Horde has a mirror chain through the Mag'har faction and a visually identical mount, Game iconReins of the Cobalt Riding Talbuk, from Provisioner Nasela in Garadar. Both versions share the same name but count as separate mounts in the collection and require their own faction.

In patch 11.1 The War Within, both Kurenai reputation and the mount itself are fully available. All Outland content is completed solo at the max level of 80, so farming Exalted takes a few hours of relaxed play in Nagrand rather than the weeks it took in the original Burning Crusade.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rare blue color — cobalt talbuks appear nowhere except this line. The model looks fresh next to the standard Alliance steeds and pairs perfectly with blue and silver armor sets.
  • Part of a collection of eight Kurenai talbuksTrader Narasu sells four colors of riding talbuks and four colors of war talbuks at the same time. A single Exalted standing unlocks access to all eight mounts at once.
  • Account-bound — once you buy the mount, it appears in the collection of every character on your account, regardless of class and specialization.
  • Contributes to collector achievements — the talbuk counts toward your mount-count achievement progress.
  • A path to the "the Diplomat" title — Exalted with the Kurenai is part of the The Diplomat achievement, alongside the Timbermaw Hold and Sporeggar. If you are working on this title, farming the Kurenai closes two items at once: the mount and the achievement

Requirements and Preparation

Before setting out for the mount, make sure the following conditions are met:

  • An Alliance character of any class and race
  • Level 30+ (at max level this is a formality)
  • The Game iconApprentice Riding skill learned — it is cheap at the riding trainer in any capital
  • 70 gold for the mount itself
  • Exalted reputation with the Kurenai faction

At level 80 with current gear, the entire farm is risk-free: Nagrand ogres scale within Outland and die in one or two button presses.

How to Get to Nagrand

Nagrand is in Outland, and the easiest way to reach it is through Shattrath:

  1. Open the map and use the portal to Shattrath from any Alliance capital. In Stormwind the relevant portal is in the Mage Quarter
  2. In Shattrath itself, find the portal to Nagrand among the Lower City merchants
  3. An alternative route is to fly directly to the Telaar flight master from any known Outland flight point

Your main destination is Telaar, the main Kurenai town in southern Nagrand. From there it is convenient to both turn in beads and buy the mount.

Step-by-Step Path to Exalted Reputation

Reputation with the Kurenai is gained through one-time quests in Zangarmarsh and Nagrand, and then through repeatable turn-ins of Obsidian Warbeads. Neither dungeons nor raids grant Kurenai reputation, so the entire process takes place on the surface of Nagrand.

Step 1. Unlocking the Faction in Zangarmarsh

  1. Fly to Zangarmarsh and head to Orebor Harborage — a small Kurenai settlement in the north of the zone
  2. Take the introductory quests from the Kurenai in Orebor Harborage. They raise reputation from "Hostile" to "Neutral" and unlock further chains
  3. Finish the entire Orebor Harborage quest line — it grants about 4,500 reputation and leads you to the main Nagrand quests

Step 2. The Main Nagrand Quests

Almost all Kurenai story chains in Nagrand grant reputation up to Honored and bring you right up to Revered:

  • The quest line in central Telaar from the Kurenai elders
  • The series of quests clearing out the Warmaul ogre camps to the northeast of Telaar
  • Quests assisting the Kurenai hunting camps around Halaa and the Nagrand lakes
  • Tasks related to the Mag'har territories and the clan war

Completing all the one-time quests grants about 16,000 reputation — enough to push the bar to the middle of Revered without repeatable tasks.

Step 3. The Repeatable Quest "Vicious Enemies"

This is the key step. After reaching Friendly with the Kurenai, take the quest "Vicious Enemies" from Wardkeeper Moy'prn Jill in Telaar, and then its repeatable version "More Warbeads". Each turn-in of 10 Game iconObsidian Warbeads grants 500 reputation with the Kurenai.

If your goal is to close the path from Neutral to Exalted through beads alone, you will need roughly 840 beads (84 turn-ins of 10). In practice this number is lower thanks to quest reputation and from killing the ogres themselves: each Warmaul or Boulderfist ogre grants another 10 reputation.

Step 4. Farming Obsidian Warbeads

The beads drop from Nagrand ogres roughly 30–35% of the time. The best farming spots:

  • Burning Blade Ruins (around 33, 43) — one of the most popular spots, with densely built Boulderfist camps and a very high bead drop chance
  • Warmaul Hill (around 31, 29) — a large Warmaul clan camp with a cave. Convenient for running circles without downtime
  • Laughing Skull Ruins (around 52, 74) — a Laughing Skull clan camp in the southwest of the map
  • Northwind Cleft and Southwind Cleft — compact Boulderfist camps, handy for a quick there-and-back clear

In addition to beads, the ogres drop cloth and gray junk, which partly pays back your time even in the first hour of farming.

Step 5. Buying the Mount

Once the reputation bar hits Exalted (42,000/42,000):

  1. Return to Telaar to Trader Narasu. He stands to the left of the inn entrance, just below the flight master
  2. Open his trade dialog
  3. Buy the Game iconReins of the Cobalt Riding Talbuk for 70 gold
  4. The mount is instantly added to the collection of your entire account

The Full Talbuk Lineup at Trader Narasu

For a single Exalted standing with the Kurenai, you gain access to the full talbuk lineup at once. It makes sense to grab all eight colors right away so you do not have to return and waste time again.

War Game iconCobalt War Talbuk 100 gold
War Game iconSilver War Talbuk 100 gold
War Game iconTan War Talbuk 100 gold

The full collection costs a total of 680 gold — a sum you can gather in one evening session at level 80.

Farm Optimization

Which Class Is Easier

Collecting beads is equally comfortable on almost all level-80 classes, but some specs work noticeably faster:

  • Demon Hunter, Windwalker Monk, Balance Druid — thanks to mobile AoE abilities and quick dashes. They ideally pull the entire Warmaul cave in a single pass
  • Retribution Paladin and Fury Warrior — instant destruction of packs through Game iconDivine Storm and Game iconWhirlwind
  • Mage, Warlock and Shadow Priest — cooldown-free mass abilities quickly process the ogre camps on open terrain

The Optimal Route

The classic circle through the Burning Blade Ruins looks like this:

  1. Fly to the nearest Nagrand flight master or use the Shattrath hearthstone, then the portal to Nagrand
  2. Land on the northern edge of the ruins, pull the first pack of ogres and kill them with AoE abilities
  3. Run along the outer ring of the ruins clockwise, clearing the camps
  4. Descend to the central part and finish off the remaining groups
  5. One full circle takes 3–4 minutes and yields an average of 15–25 beads

In an hour of relaxed farming you can collect 300–500 beads — that is 30–50 turn-ins and 15,000–25,000 reputation with the Kurenai. Going from Neutral to Exalted is realistic in 2–3 hours of pure farming.

Reputation Boosters

In patch 11.1 The War Within, several modifiers are active that noticeably speed up farming old reputation:

  • Human race — passively gains +10% to any faction reputation
  • The Banner of Valor and similar items from the Dragon Isles grant a temporary reputation bonus
  • Global event bonuses, when they are active on the calendar

Tips From an Experienced Player

  • Grab all colors in one go — once you reach Exalted, buy all four riding and four war talbuks at once. Returning for another color for the sake of one extra mount is a waste of time.
  • Decide in advance where to turn in beadsGame iconObsidian Warbeads are also used for reputation with the Consortium. If you need both factions, split your turn-ins rather than giving everything to one side.
  • Farm two factions in parallel — the Nagrand ogres also drop Dried Ogre Ear for Consortium reputation. You loot all the corpses anyway, so one session closes two directions at once.
  • Don't run on foot across Nagrand — use the flight master or a flying mount, since flying in Outland is allowed from the very first level of riding skill.
  • The Mag'har "twin" exists separately — if you have a Horde character and want the same cobalt talbuk on both sides, note that the Game iconMag'har version requires a separate reputation grind and is added to the collection as a standalone mount.
  • Check your reputation bar before each turn-in — beads grant a fixed 500 reputation, so as you approach Exalted it is convenient to turn them in one portion at a time so as not to overpay with time.
  • Don't forget about "the Diplomat" — if the title is part of your plans, level the Kurenai alongside Timbermaw and Sporeggar. Unlike the Kurenai, these factions level faster and in parallel with other activities, which will save you from repeated returns to Outland.
