Overview

Spire of Scarlet Pain

Game iconSpire of Scarlet Pain is a two-handed caster staff added to World of Warcraft with the Firelands raid in the Cataclysm expansion (patch 4.2). This weapon is intended for intellect-based classes: mages, warlocks, priests, druids, shamans and monks. The staff model is rendered in dark crimson tones with scarlet, smoldering accents that echo the fiery theme of Ragnaros's lair.

For the modern player this staff is interesting first and foremost as a transmog piece. Its item level has long been irrelevant, but the silhouette remains recognizable and fits "fiery" and "demonic" looks well. You can obtain it solo — the raid clears easily at the current level cap of 90 in Midnight.

Source

The normal version of the staff drops at random from regular trash mobs in the Firelands raid. It is not a named boss drop but a trophy from ordinary enemies between fights, so farming comes down to clearing the raid's corridors.

  • The raid sits on the slopes of Mount Hyjal, with its entrance near the Sulfuron Spire.
  • You can step inside solo on any class — the raid's mobs have long posed no threat at level 90.
  • The drop is random and not tied to a specific boss, so it makes sense to clear the entire route through the raid.
  • The normal version is bind-on-equip, so you can buy it or trade for it via the auction house if you would rather not farm it yourself.

The heroic version of the same staff is sold by Lurah Wrathvine — she stands at the raid entrance on Mount Hyjal. The purchase requires the normal staff itself plus a Game iconCrystallized Firestone, which drops from raid bosses on heroic difficulty. The heroic version's appearance is identical to the normal one, so this route is not necessary for the look alone.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It harmonizes with fire-themed sets — for example, the caster tier sets from the same Firelands raid.
  • It looks great with dark red and black armor thanks to the crimson smoldering accents on the headpiece.
  • It suits "demonic" warlock looks thanks to its grim palette.
  • It contrasts with a priest's light cloth — a debatable but expressive choice for weapon-focused outfits.

Tips

1

Clear the whole raid: the drop is random from regular mobs, so skipping sections is not worth it.

2

The raid can be entered once per week per character, so bring alts along to speed up the farm.

3

Classes with high mobility and strong multi-target clear are optimal — they make the run through the raid quicker.

4

If you would rather not farm it yourself, look for the normal version on the auction house: its bind-on-equip status makes that possible.

5

The heroic version grants the same appearance, so there is no need to spend a Crystallized Firestone for transmog purposes.

6

Once you have collected the look, check your appearance collection — the staff will stay available to every character on the account.
