What Is the Legacy System?

At the “Deep Dive into World of Warcraft: Forever” roundtable at BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard revealed Legacy — a progression system that classic WoW never had. In essence it is a local take on achievements: the game sets goals for you, hands out points for completing them, and those points are invested into trees of permanent bonuses. It all works at the account level rather than on a single character.

Who Is It For?

Legacy is aimed at two types of players. The first are those who like to run several characters at once: the system explicitly calls for different classes and different professions, so alts stop being parallel lives and start working toward a shared tally. The second are those who care about seeing progress and ticking off goals: Legacy gives them a clear task list layered on top of the usual adventure.

The key word here is “account-wide.” Points earned by any character are available to all the others. At the same time, each hero can have their own layout of bonuses: a shared pool of points, an individual build.

Legacy Points work across your entire account

Legacy Challenges

Points are awarded for Legacy Challenges. You won’t have to do anything exotic — these are tasks drawn from what you’re already doing as you play: level a character of a certain class to max, properly build up a profession, clear a dungeon or a raid. Each completed challenge grants one point.

The categories are:

  • world exploration;
  • character development;
  • profession mastery;
  • reaching PvP ranks;
  • improving reputation;
  • clearing dungeons and raids.

The Three Bonus Trees

Points are invested into one of three trees: Professions, Resourcefulness, and Adventure. The first covers crafting and gathering, the second handles combat and combat-adjacent details, and the third is about everyday activities.

The three Legacy trees: Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness

Professions

The “Professions” Legacy tree
  • Overtime (0/5) — increases the chance to gain a skill point when using any primary, secondary, or class craft by 4%.
  • Productivity Bonus (0/5) — has a 5% chance to grant a 100% bonus to vendor favor when turning in a crate at the Azeroth Trade Authority or at Durotar Supply and Logistics.
  • Bait Master (0/5) — while fishing with an active lure, you have a 25% chance to catch an extra fish.
  • Master Chef (0/5) — cooking recipes have a 10% chance to yield an additional result.
  • Diligent Study (0/5, 25 sec cast, 23 hr cooldown) — raises your lowest primary and secondary craft by 1 skill level. If two primary crafts and all three secondary crafts have already reached skill level 300, it instead grants 2 to 4 random Elemental Essences.

Resourcefulness

The “Resourcefulness” Legacy tree
  • The Quick and the Dead (0/2) — increases your movement speed while dead by 5%, and beneficial spells and abilities cost no resources for one minute after resurrecting or until you enter combat.
  • Reinforcement (0/5) — you lose 6% less durability upon death.
  • Diplomat (0/5) — increases reputation gains by 2%.
  • Great Honor (0/5) — increases the amount of honor points you earn by 2%.
  • Persistence (0/2) — class abilities that grant lasting bonuses to your whole party or raid last 50% longer. The same applies to effects from resting at a camp.

Adventure

The “Adventure” Legacy tree
  • Well Rested (0/5) — rested experience accumulates 4% faster, and its upper limit is increased by 4%.
  • Talented (0/5) — talent points start dripping in at level 9 instead of 10, but the overall cap of 51 points stays the same.
  • Heightened Awareness (0/2) — you detect stealthed targets as if your level were 1 higher. Does not work on battlegrounds.
  • Thrill of Adventure (0/5) — every killing blow on a challenging enemy restores 1% of your maximum health and mana over 10 seconds. Does not work in dungeons, raids, or on battlegrounds.

The Point Cap

The system’s main limitation: at the launch of Forever you can earn 65 Legacy Points, but you can only invest 16 of them into the trees. You won’t be able to unlock everything at once — you’ll have to choose what will genuinely suit your playstyle.

16 points to invest out of 65 available

This was done deliberately: the developers wanted to remove the race to “unlock every bonus as fast as possible” and leave a meaningful choice instead.

Surplus Points Aren’t Wasted

Everything you earn beyond the cap feeds into a separate Legacy Rewards Track. That one is pure cosmetics and status items: pets, mounts, toys, tabards. As concrete examples, they showed a replica of the Stalgorn air rifle and a pet — a spectral bear cub.

How Does It Work with Different Playstyles?

Forever has no traditional split into servers — instead, when you create a character you choose a playstyle: normal (PvE), PvP, roleplay, or hardcore. Legacy and the collection are shared across the first three. Hardcore characters keep their own separate tally, but with a caveat: points earned in hardcore also count toward the other rulesets, while the reverse is not true. If a hardcore character dies and you transfer them to another playstyle, the collection and Legacy progress move along with them.

What Comes Next?

Legacy is presented not as a one-time event but as a system that Blizzard plans to promote and improve: new challenges, a higher point cap, additional bonuses, and possibly whole new trees in future updates.
