Get Blue Riding Nether Ray mount
Overview

Blue Riding Nether Ray is a flying mount added in patch 2.1.0 of The Burning Crusade expansion. It is purchased from the quartermaster Grella at Blackwind Landing in Terokkar Forest for 200 gold (160 gold with the Exalted discount). To buy it you need Exalted reputation with the Sha'tari Skyguard faction.
Nether rays are unique mounts from Outland whose model is not used for any other mount in the game. This makes them truly collectible means of transport.
Why you want this mount
- Unique model. Riding nether rays are the only mounts in the game with the ray model. No other mount uses this model, which makes them visually unmistakable
- Five color variants. Besides blue, four more colors are available:
green,
red,
purple and
silver. All five can be purchased at once once you reach Exalted - "Skettis nest flyover" achievement. Upon reaching Exalted with the Sha'tari Skyguard you earn the achievement of the same name
- Ground and flying mode. The mount works both on the ground and in the air. Since patch 5.4.0 nether rays can also swim
- Account-bound. Once purchased, the mount becomes available to all characters on your account

How to get to Skettis
Skettis is the lair of the arakkoa, located in the southeastern part of Terokkar Forest in Outland. The Sha'tari Skyguard camp is located on the Blackwind Landing platform north of Skettis.
- Travel to Shattrath via a portal from any capital
- From Shattrath fly southeast into Terokkar Forest
- Blackwind Landing is at coordinates 64.2, 66.2 — it is a floating platform reachable only on a flying mount
How to start grinding reputation
You start at Neutral with the Sha'tari Skyguard. To buy the mounts you need to earn 42,000 reputation points up to Exalted.
Starting quests
Head to Yuula near the flight master in Shattrath and pick up the quest "A Threat From Above". This quest chain will lead you to Skettis and unlock access to the daily quests.
It is also recommended to start the Ogri'la quest chain in Blade's Edge Mountains — it opens additional daily quests that give reputation with the Skyguard as well.
Ways to gain reputation
Daily quests (up to 1,350 reputation per day)
Two daily quests are available in Skettis:
| Quest | Reputation | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Fires Over Skettis | 250 | Drop bombs on arakkoa eggs while flying on a mount |
| Escape from Skettis | 250 | Escort a prisoner to a safe zone |
Additionally, if you have unlocked the Ogri'la quests in Blade's Edge Mountains:
| Quest | Reputation | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Bomb Them Again! | 500 | Kill elementals near Ogri'la |
| Wrangle More Aether Rays! | 350 | Catch rays using a lure |
In total: up to 1,350 reputation daily from quests alone.
Farming Shadow Dust (repeatable quest)
By killing arakkoa and kaliri in Skettis you collect
Shadow Dust. Every 6 units of Shadow Dust can be turned in for the quest "More Shadow Dust" for 150 reputation. This is a repeatable quest with no limit on the number of turn-ins per day.
In addition, for turning in the dust you receive an
Elixir of Shadows, which for 20 minutes lets you see the spectral arakkoa — they drop Time-Lost Scrolls.
Summoning mini-bosses and Terokk (advanced farming)
This is the fastest way to gain reputation:
- Use the Elixir of Shadows and kill the spectral arakkoa in Skettis
- Collect
Time-Lost Scrolls — 10 are needed to summon a mini-boss at one of the skull piles - For killing each mini-boss you get 100 reputation and the quest "Blood Foes", which grants another 350 reputation (for 4 mini-bosses = 400 + 350 = 750 reputation)
- After killing all four mini-bosses you receive a
Time-Lost Offering, which can summon Terokk — an elite boss - For killing Terokk you receive 500 reputation
By repeating this cycle you can gain about 2,000 reputation per hour.
Killing regular mobs
Arakkoa and kaliri in Skettis give 10 reputation each. This is the least efficient method, but reputation trickles in alongside farming Shadow Dust.
Optimal leveling strategy
Fast path (1–2 days)
If you want to get the mount as soon as possible:
- Complete all introductory quests in Skettis and Ogri'la — this gives several thousand reputation
- Focus on farming Shadow Dust and summoning mini-bosses
- Repeat the cycle: killing mobs → turning in dust → Elixir of Shadows → spectral arakkoa → scrolls → mini-bosses → Terokk
- At a rate of ~2,000 reputation per hour you will need roughly 13–15 hours of pure farming
Relaxed path (30–37 days)
If you are in no hurry:
- Complete all available daily quests every day (1,350 reputation)
- Supplement with Shadow Dust farming if you wish
- In 30–37 days you will reach Exalted
Buying Shadow Dust on the auction house
Shadow Dust can be bought on the auction house if you do not want to farm mobs yourself. This lets you speed up the process significantly by simply turning in the quest "More Shadow Dust" over and over.
Buying the mount
After reaching Exalted, head to Grella at Blackwind Landing:
Grella has all five riding nether rays available for purchase:
| Mount | Item | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| ID: 32319 | 160 gold | |
| ID: 32314 | 160 gold | |
| ID: 32317 | 160 gold | |
| ID: 32316 | 160 gold | |
| ID: 32318 | 160 gold |
The cost includes the 20% Exalted discount (base price — 200 gold). You can buy all five rays at once for 800 gold.
Grella also sells:
Nether Ray Fry — a battle pet- Sha'tari Skyguard Tabard
Movement speed
The mount's speed depends on the riding skill you have learned:
| Skill | Ground speed | Flight speed |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice Riding | +60% | — |
| Expert Riding | +100% | +150% |
| Artisan Riding | +100% | +280% |
| Master Riding | +100% | +310% |
Tips
Buy Shadow Dust on the auction house. If gold is not a problem for you, buy up the dust on the auction house and simply turn in the repeatable quest. This saves a lot of time
Don't forget about Ogri'la. The Ogri'la quest chain in Blade's Edge Mountains opens two additional daily quests that give Skyguard reputation. Start it in parallel
All five rays at once. Having reached Exalted, you can buy all five color variants at once. The total cost is 800 gold (with the discount)
Rays can swim. Since patch 5.4.0 riding nether rays gained the ability to swim, making them more versatile
The Elixir of Shadows lasts 20 minutes. Plan your spectral arakkoa farming to make the most of the elixir's duration
Terokk is an elite boss. At high levels he poses no threat, but remember that to summon him you must first kill four mini-bosses

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
