Get Bonehoof Tauralus mount
Overview

Bonehoof Tauralus is a rare ground mount added in patch 9.0.1 of the Shadowlands expansion. It is a massive bone beast from Maldraxxus, one of the members of the tauralus family — giant bull-like creatures crafted from bone and necrotic magic. The mount drops from the rare NPC Tahonta in Maldraxxus, but to get the drop you must be a member of the Necrolord Covenant and have the active construct Neena as a companion.
The Bonehoof Tauralus has a distinctive greenish coloring and a massive bony build. Unlike many other Shadowlands mounts, it is an exclusively ground-based means of transport. The mount belongs to the giant beast category and shares its model with the other tauralus mounts — the Chosen, Decaying and Battlescarred.
Why You Want This Mount
- Secret mount — the Bonehoof Tauralus is one of the hidden mounts of Shadowlands. The game does not tell you directly that the Neena construct is required to get the drop, which makes the mount especially prized among collectors
- Unique acquisition method — the mechanic of a mandatory active construct companion makes this mount truly special. Neena literally "sniffs out" the mount from Tahonta's body
- Rarity — a low drop chance (less than 1%) combined with the specific requirements means that far from every player owns this mount
- Thematic model — the tauralus fits perfectly into the aesthetic of Maldraxxus with its necrotic magic and bone constructs
- Available to all characters — once obtained, the mount becomes available on every character on your account
How to Obtain
To get the mount you need to meet several conditions and prepare your character.
- Join the Necrolord Covenant. This is a mandatory condition — the mount only drops for members of this covenant
- Unlock the Abomination Factory and upgrade it to tier 2
- Find and unlock the construct Neena (detailed instructions below)
- Summon Neena as an active companion
- Head to Maldraxxus and find the rare NPC Tahonta
- Kill Tahonta with Neena active — the
Bonehoof Tauralus mount may drop from the loot - When you receive it, use the item to learn the mount

How to Unlock Neena
Neena is a secret construct companion in the form of a dog, crafted from the soul of a worgen. Without her, the mount will not drop from Tahonta.
Step 1: Upgrade the Abomination Factory to Tier 2
The Abomination Factory is a special Necrolord Covenant building located near the Theater of the Damned at the Seat of the Primus.
- Tier 1 — cost: 1,500 Reservoir Anima and 6 Redeemed Souls. Unlocks basic access to Abominable Stitching
- Tier 2 ("Limb Crafting") — cost: 5,000 Reservoir Anima and 12 Redeemed Souls. Unlocks additional constructs, including the ability to unlock Neena
The upgrade is purchased from Arkadia Moa at the Seat of the Primus.
Step 2: Find Neena's Soul
After upgrading to tier 2, head to the Putrid Mound in Maldraxxus.
Neena is locked in a cage. An elite guard mob stands in front of the cage. Kill it to get the key and open the cage.
Step 3: Complete Neena's Quest
Once freed, Neena will offer a quest. Complete it to unlock the construct blueprint "Neena" at the Abominable Stitching table.
Step 4: Craft the Construct's Body
Return to the Abomination Factory and craft Neena's body. To do this you will need:
- 20 units of Malleable Flesh — a material gathered from mobs in Maldraxxus and from chests
After crafting, you will receive an item to summon Neena as a companion.
Where to Find Tahonta
Tahonta is a rare level 54–60 NPC of the bull family that roams the Thorned Wastes in Maldraxxus, southwest of the Theater of Pain.
Coordinates and Route
Tahonta patrols the area along a circular route. If you do not see it at the given coordinates, scan the nearby area — it may have moved farther along its route.
Respawn Timer
Tahonta respawns roughly every 15–20 minutes after being killed. This is a fairly short timer, allowing you to make several attempts per gaming session.
Loot Restrictions
You can loot Tahonta once per day per character. Repeated kills on the same day give no additional chances at the mount.
Farming Strategy
Preparation
- Make sure your character is part of the Necrolord Covenant
- Verify that the Abomination Factory is upgraded to tier 2
- Unlock and craft the construct Neena
- Summon Neena before you start farming — make sure she follows you
Daily Plan
- Summon Neena
- Head to Tahonta's coordinates in Maldraxxus
- If Tahonta is there — kill it and check the loot
- If Tahonta is not there — wait up to 20 minutes or check whether another player killed it recently
- Repeat daily until the mount drops
Additional Characters
If you have several Necrolord characters with Neena unlocked, you can increase the number of attempts per day. Each character has a separate daily loot limit.
How Long It Will Take
With a drop chance below 1% and one attempt per day, be ready for a long farm. Some players get the mount in 5–10 attempts, others need more than 100 kills. On average, expect several weeks of daily attempts.
Relevance in Midnight
Even though Shadowlands is an outdated expansion, the mount is still available to obtain. Here is what to keep in mind:
- Necrolord Covenant — the Shadowlands covenant system remains available. You can join the Necrolord Covenant and develop its features, including the Abomination Factory
- Level scaling — at max level (90 in Midnight) Tahonta is killed instantly with a single hit
- Anima and resources — upgrading the Abomination Factory requires anima. At the current level it can be gathered quickly from world quests and chests in Maldraxxus
- Access to Maldraxxus — use the portal in Oribos or a direct flight
Tips
Always check that Neena is active — the most common mistake when farming this mount: players forget to summon Neena before killing Tahonta. Without her, the mount is guaranteed not to drop
Mark Tahonta on the map — use the /way macro or the TomCat's Tours addon to automatically mark Maldraxxus rare mobs
Do not confuse it with the Armored Bonehoof Tauralus — the
Armored Bonehoof Tauralus is a separate mount obtained through the Necrolord system at renown level 39. Do not mix them up
Combine it with other rare mobs — while waiting for Tahonta to respawn, kill other Maldraxxus rare mobs to make progress toward "Adventurer of Maldraxxus"
Use the Silver Dragon or RareScanner addon — these addons will alert you when Tahonta spawns, which is especially useful if you are busy with other things in the zone
Malleable Flesh for Neena — if you are short on the material to craft the construct, farm mobs in the Theater of Pain and the surrounding area. Malleable Flesh is also found in Maldraxxus chests

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
