MoP Classic Brewmaster Monk — Guide (Phase 5)
About the Class
The Brewmaster Monk is a tank that spends energy and chi. It avoids damage through high dodge and parry, but its main feature is
Stagger: 20% of incoming physical damage does not hit immediately but is spread out as a periodic effect over ten seconds. The accumulated pool can then be washed away with
Purifying Brew.
Because of this, the Brewmaster's defense is the most "hands-on" among tanks: decisions have to be made every few seconds. In a raid it is a sturdy main tank with very strong area damage and decent self-healing.
Strengths
- Outstanding survivability thanks to absorbs and the stagger mechanic.
- A rich defensive toolkit:
Guard,
Fortifying Brew,
Zen Meditation,
Elusive Brew. - Strong self-healing through
Expel Harm and healing spheres. - Very mobile thanks to
Roll and
Tiger's Lust. - Excellent area damage for a tank.
- Scales well with item level.
Weaknesses
- Fewer dashes than the other Monk specializations.
- Demanding to manage: stagger and Purifying Brew require constant attention.
- Brings less utility to the raid than other tanks.
- Very dependent on the mastery threshold, otherwise resources come in erratically.
- Losing
Shuffle instantly turns into energy starvation.
Stat Priority
- 1Mastery (up to the hard threshold of 15%, that is 5100 rating)
- 2Hit rating (up to 7.5%, that is 2550 rating)
- 3Mastery
- 4Agility
- 5Critical strike rating and Haste (roughly up to 4000)
- 6Haste from 4000 to 11000
Going above 11000 Haste rating is not worth it: energy will start piling up faster than you can spend it. Mastery matters most here — it both removes dodges and parries and stabilizes chi generation.
