Jeweled Onyx Panther

The Jeweled Onyx Panther is an epic ground and flying mount added in patch 5.5.0 of the Mists of Pandaria expansion. It is a luxurious mechanical panther studded with gems, crafted by jewelcrafters. The mount is created through the Jewelcrafting profession by combining four colored panthers: the Jade Panther, the Ruby Panther, the Sapphire Panther and the Sunstone Panther.

The Jeweled Onyx Panther is one of the most prestigious and expensive crafted mounts in the game. The five panthers (four colored and one onyx) are a reference to the Voltron animated series, where several machines combined into one giant robot. The mount is not soulbound on pickup and can be sold at the auction house.

• Status mount — the Jeweled Onyx Panther is considered one of the most prestigious crafted mounts in the game. Its cost and the difficulty of obtaining it make it rare in players' collections.
• Ground and flying — the mount works both on the ground and in the air, with speed depending on your riding skill (up to +310% while flying).
• Tradable item — unlike most mounts, the Jeweled Onyx Panther is not soulbound on pickup. You can buy a finished mount at the auction house if you don't want to craft it.
• Available to all characters — once learned, the mount becomes available on every character on your account.
• Unique model — an elegant black panther inlaid with sparkling gems. It stands out among other mounts with its refined design.

There are two ways to obtain the mount: craft it yourself through Jewelcrafting or buy it from another player at the auction house.

Path 1: Crafting via Jewelcrafting

1. Level Pandaria Jewelcrafting to skill level 75
2. Reach Exalted reputation with the Order of the Cloud Serpent
3. Buy the Design: Jeweled Onyx Panther from San Redscale at the Arboretum (Jade Forest) for 200 gold.
4. Also learn the recipes for the four colored panthers from the same vendor (they require Revered or Exalted reputation).
5. Craft or buy at the auction house the four colored panthers: the Jade, the Ruby, the Sapphire and the Sunstone Panther.
6. Combine the four panthers using the Jeweled Onyx Panther recipe.
7. Use the resulting item to learn the mount.

Path 2: Buying at the Auction House

1. Open the auction house and search for "Jeweled Onyx Panther"
2. Buy a finished mount from another player
3. Use the item to learn the mount

The Jeweled Onyx Panther is not crafted from ordinary reagents but from four finished panther mounts. Each of them must be created or bought separately.

Direct Materials

Important: the four panthers must be items in your bags, not learned mounts. Do not use them before crafting the onyx panther — they will be consumed during creation.

Materials for Each Colored Panther

Each of the four panthers requires the same set of base materials, differing only in the type of gem.

Jade Panther:

• 1x Orb of Mystery (20,000 gold from a vendor)
• 20x Wild Jade
• 4x Living Steel
• 2x Serpent's Eye

Ruby Panther:

• 1x Orb of Mystery (20,000 gold from a vendor)
• 20x Primordial Ruby
• 4x Living Steel
• 2x Serpent's Eye

Sapphire Panther:

• 1x Orb of Mystery (20,000 gold from a vendor)
• 20x River's Heart
• 4x Living Steel
• 2x Serpent's Eye

Sunstone Panther:

• 1x Orb of Mystery (20,000 gold from a vendor)
• 20x Sun's Radiance
• 4x Living Steel
• 2x Serpent's Eye

Total Materials for the Jeweled Onyx Panther

The minimum cost of the Orbs of Mystery alone is 80,000 gold. Factoring in the gems, living steel and serpent's eyes, the total cost of the mount is considerably higher.

The Orb of Mystery is sold by the vendor Big Keech in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms for 20,000 gold each.

Important: following the events of patch 8.3, the Vale of Eternal Blossoms was altered by N'Zoth's invasion. To access the old version of the zone and the vendor, speak with Zidormi near the Mogu'shan Palace — she will send you into the past, where Big Keech is available.

To buy the Jeweled Onyx Panther recipe, you need Exalted reputation with the Order of the Cloud Serpent. The faction is located at the Arboretum, Jade Forest.

Main Reputation Sources

• Daily quests — available at the Arboretum after the introductory chain. They each grant 500 reputation points, and several quests are available per day.
• Onyx Eggs — pick up Onyx Eggs (small cloud serpents) all over the Jade Forest. Each egg turned in grants 500 reputation points.
• Serpent-rearing quests — after the introductory chain, you are given a cloud serpent hatchling to care for by completing daily tasks.

The Fast Way

At max level (80 in The War Within), the grind takes roughly 1–2 weeks of completing dailies. Look for Onyx Eggs — they speed up the process considerably. The eggs are scattered across the Jade Forest, especially near the Arboretum and on the cliffs.

Reputation Boosters

• Darkmoon Faire — the "WHEE!" buff from the carousel (+10% reputation for 60 minutes).
• Banner of Cooperation — a guild bonus of +10% reputation.
• World Quest Bonus Event — if active, grants an additional bonus.

The Cheapest Path

1. Orb of Mystery — buy these only from the vendor at 20,000 gold each. At the auction house they usually cost more.
2. Living Steel — if you have an alchemist, transmute it from Trillium Bars.
3. Gems — obtained from Pandaria ore through cutting. Farm Ghost Iron Deposits in the zones of Pandaria.
4. Serpent's Eyes — created with Pandaria Jewelcrafting from daily tasks or bought at the auction house.

Is It Worth Buying at the Auction House

If you are not a jewelcrafter, buying a finished mount at the auction house is the only option (besides ordering one from another player). The auction house price usually includes a markup for the labor, but it saves a significant amount of time on grinding reputation and the profession.

If you already have Jewelcrafting, compare the cost of materials at the auction house with the price of a finished mount. Crafting is often cheaper than buying a finished mount, which also opens up an earning opportunity.
