Get Fang of the Desolate Soul
Overview

Fang of the Desolate Soul is a rare one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It is a short blade with a massive bone hilt shaped like a beast's fang, a dark metallic edge, and an ominous deep-purple glow running along the cutting edge — a model that visually echoes the themes of solitude and loss baked into its name.
The dagger is granted as a weapon-choice reward in the final quest of the Borean chains: one version for each faction, both wrapping up the story arc near the temple city of En'kilah. Its stats are standard for the item level (agility, stamina, critical strike rating) and mean nothing today — the Fang of the Desolate Soul is valued purely as a transmog model.
It is a guaranteed reward: the quests are completed once per character, and the dagger is handed out as a weapon choice at the end of the chain. No luck, no farming — just run the quest line and grab it from the reward shelf.
Source
The Fang of the Desolate Soul is a weapon-choice reward in the final quest of the Borean chains. The quest differs between factions, but the reward is the same: on each reward shelf the dagger sits alongside five alternatives for other classes.
Horde — quest Hellscream's Champion:
- Picked up from Garrosh Hellscream at Warsong Hold in the south of the Borean Tundra.
- The goal is to travel to the village of Taunka'le and meet with Chieftain Winterhoof, reporting Garrosh's order.
- Completing it grants +500 reputation with the Warsong Offensive and a weapon of your choice.
Alliance — quest Last Rites:
- Picked up from Thassarian at the Dead Shore, east of the village of Taunka'le.
- The goal is to reach the temple city of En'kilah, use a teleportation orb to slip into the floating citadel of Naxxanar, and help Thassarian in the final scene with Prince Valanar.
- Completing it grants +500 reputation with the Valiance Expedition and a weapon of your choice.
Key features of this source:
- The dagger is obtained by both factions — the model and name in the rewards are identical.
- The quest is completed once per character: you cannot turn it in again and take a second dagger on the same hero.
- To collect the model account-wide, a single run of the quest by either faction is enough — the transmog unlocks globally.
- The quest reward shelf offers six weapon options for different classes. If the dagger isn't your character's main weapon, that's fine: grab the Fang of the Desolate Soul for the collection and fill the second slot with anything from later quests.
- Binding is "becomes soulbound when picked up." The dagger cannot be traded or sold, so each character has to go after the model in person if you want it equipped.
Who it suits visually
- The dagger's deep-purple glow sits well in looks with a lilac and dark-violet palette — Dark Death Knight kits and early Tier 7 sets from the Wrath of the Lich King era.
- The fang-shaped bone hilt fits "beastly" and "shamanic" concepts: looks built around totemic motifs, the hunt, wild tribes.
- The dagger harmonizes with dark-gray and charcoal armor — the silvery blade creates a clean contrasting accent against a dark backdrop.
- It is a good paired blade for a rogue who needs a grim but not overly ornate weapon with no bulky effects — the Fang of the Desolate Soul is modest in silhouette and doesn't draw attention to itself.
- It contrasts with light, bright cloth kits — a debatable but expressive accent for those who want one dark detail in a neutral look.
Tips
The fastest way to claim the dagger is to run the Borean Tundra starting chain to the end on a new character. That's 20–30 minutes on a fresh hero and a couple of clicks on a max-level one with current level scaling.
Take the Fang of the Desolate Soul even on classes that don't wield daggers in the main hand: the transmog model unlocks in the collection and becomes available to any other character on the account who can wield daggers.
If you play both Horde and Alliance, you don't need to complete both quests: the model is shared across both sides, and a single completion is enough.
The reward shelf has six weapon options. Decide right away which model you want as a transmog rather than which is best by stats: stats stopped mattering long ago, but the chosen dagger/staff/gun stays in your transmog collection forever only if you actually pick it.
The Alliance final quest requires reaching the top of Naxxanar via a teleportation orb inside the citadel — switch off combat mode in En'kilah ahead of time, otherwise the mobs at the entrance will distract you every time you return.
If the quest was once turned in but the dagger wasn't chosen, you won't be able to obtain it again on that character. Roll an alt or use an existing character of the other faction to add the model.
At modern levels the quest chains scale, so you can run them at any point after unlocking Northrend — there's no need to wait for the "right" level.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
