Overview

Abyss Worm

Game iconAbyss Worm is an epic-quality flying mount added in patch 7.2.0 of the Legion expansion. It is a massive green serpentine worm with otherworldly shadows dripping from its scales. The in-game description reads: "The shadows dripping from its scales are not of this world. Perhaps this creature rose from the depths of Azeroth's oceans?"

The Abyss Worm shares its model with another mount: the Game iconRiddler's Mind-Worm (a dark-blue variant).

Once learned, the mount becomes available to all characters on your account.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rarity — the drop rate is around 2%, making the Abyss Worm one of the most coveted mounts from the Legion raids
  • Flying mount — suitable for traveling across all zones with open flight
  • Unique appearance — the green coloration is available only from this mount. The other variants of the model have different shades and sources
  • Counts toward achievements — it counts toward the "Mountain o' Mounts" series of mount-collecting achievements
  • Solo farm — the boss source is easily soloed at level 90 in Midnight

How to Get It

There are two main ways to obtain the Abyss Worm.

Method 1 — Drop from Mistress Sassz'ine

The primary way to get it. Mistress Sassz'ine is the fifth boss of the Tomb of Sargeras. The mount can drop on any raid difficulty, including Raid Finder.

Important: each difficulty has a separate raid lockout. This means you can kill the boss four times per week on a single character — once on each difficulty (Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, Mythic). Each kill grants an independent chance for the mount to drop.

Method 2 — Black Market

The Abyss Worm periodically appears on the Black Market Auction House. The starting bid is usually from 20,000 gold, but the final price on popular realms can exceed 1,000,000 gold.

This method suits those willing to pay a large sum of gold for a guaranteed acquisition.

Step-by-Step Farming Guide

Step 1 — How to Reach the Tomb of Sargeras

The Tomb of Sargeras is located on the Broken Shore in the Broken Isles.

  1. Teleport to Dalaran (Broken Isles). Use your Hearthstone if it is set there, or a portal from your faction's capital
  2. From Dalaran, fly south toward the Broken Shore
  3. The raid entrance is a large green portal in the northern part of the Broken Shore, at roughly 63.6, 21.8
/way Broken Isles 63.6 21.8 Tomb of Sargeras Entrance

Step 2 — Clearing to Mistress Sassz'ine

Mistress Sassz'ine is the fifth boss of the raid. To reach her you must defeat the first four bosses:

  1. Goroth — a simple tank boss, killed in a few seconds at level 90
  2. Sisters of the Moon — a three-phase boss, a quick fight solo
  3. Demonic Inquisition — a council of several enemies
  4. Harjatan — a sea giant
  5. Mistress Sassz'ine — your target

At level 90 in Midnight, all bosses up to Mistress Sassz'ine are killed in mere seconds on any difficulty, including Mythic.

Step 3 — The Mistress Sassz'ine Fight (Solo)

At your current character level the fight is trivial. The only mechanic worth noting is the jellyfish, which can stun your character for a few seconds. Try not to step on the green circles on the floor. Otherwise, just attack the boss — the fight will last a few seconds.

If the mount drops, the Abyss Worm item will appear directly in your bag right after the kill, similar to receiving a legendary item. It cannot be traded or passed to another player.

Step 4 — Repeating on Other Difficulties

After killing the boss on one difficulty you can switch the raid mode and clear it again:

  1. Leave the raid
  2. Right-click your portrait and select the desired raid difficulty
  3. Re-enter the raid and clear again up to Mistress Sassz'ine

Recommended clearing order:

Difficulty Note
Raid Finder Enter through the Raid Finder interface (I key), select "Tomb of Sargeras" — the "Gates of Hell" wing
Normal Manual entry through the portal
Heroic Manual entry through the portal
Mythic Manual entry through the portal

Raid Finder: Mistress Sassz'ine is in the second wing, "Gates of Hell". Open Raid Finder, select the Legion expansion, the "Tomb of Sargeras" raid and the "Gates of Hell" wing.

Farming Optimization

Multi-Threaded Farming on Alts

The most efficient way to speed up getting the mount is to use several characters:

  • Each character can kill Mistress Sassz'ine 4 times per week (once on each difficulty)
  • With 5 characters you get 20 attempts per week
  • At a 2% chance per kill and 20 attempts per week, the statistical probability of getting the mount in a single week is around 33%

Average Farming Time Estimate

Characters Attempts per Week Average Time to Obtain
1 4 ~12–13 weeks
3 12 ~4 weeks
5 20 ~2–3 weeks
10 40 ~1–2 weeks

The estimate is approximate and based on a drop rate of about 2%.

Saving Time

  • A full clear from the raid entrance to killing Mistress Sassz'ine takes 5–7 minutes at level 80
  • Set your Hearthstone in Dalaran (Broken Isles) to cut down on travel time
  • Use the Game iconGarrison Hearthstone for quick access to your Draenor garrison, and from there — through the portal to Ashran and on to Dalaran
  • If you play a Mage — create a portal to Dalaran for instant travel

Tips

1

The item appears automatically. You do not need to loot the boss — the mount, if it dropped, will be in your bag right after the kill. Do not miss the pop-up notification in the center of the screen

2

It cannot be passed to another player. The Abyss Worm is personally bound. Even if several mounts drop in one raid, each player receives their own independently

3

Raid Finder is a separate attempt. Many players forget about Raid Finder. Do not neglect this difficulty — it is an extra free chance every week

4

Don't spend bonus rolls. According to player reports, the mount is not in the bonus-roll loot table, so using bonus rolls is useless for increasing the chance

5

Black Market as a backup. If the farm drags on, check the Black Market Auction House. On less populated realms the mount can be bought for a relatively low price

6

Track your attempts. Use the Rarity addon to count kills and gauge your statistical luck. The addon shows how many times you have killed the boss and what percentage of players would already have the mount with that number of attempts

7

Druids and Demon Hunters are the most convenient classes for farming thanks to high mobility and movement speed inside the raid

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
