Overview

Ancient Salamanther

Game iconAncient Salamanther is an uncommon ground mount added to World of Warcraft: Dragonflight with patch 10.0.7 "Return to the Forbidden Reach." Visually it is a massive green salamander without gills or fins, distinct from its stormy and coral-scaled relatives thanks to a more grounded, amphibian look. The model is considered a recolor of the Game iconStormhide Salamanther, which can be bought from a vendor for Elemental Overflow in Valdrakken.

The mount drops from rare enemies on the Forbidden Reach — an island northwest of the Dragon Isles, opened in 10.0.7. The drop chance is extremely low: according to players, it ranges from 0.8 to 5% from each rare creature killed. On top of that, a character can only receive loot from a specific rare once per day, which turns collecting the mount into a multi-week daily ritual.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Unique salamander model — there is a whole family of salamanthers in the game, but the green ground version without gills is found only as the Ancient Salamanther. It is a rare chance to add an unusual amphibian mount to your collection.
  • Maximum ground speed — the mount uses the spell Game iconAncient Salamanther and grants +60% or +100% movement speed depending on your riding skill.
  • Available to all classes and factions — once earned on a single character, the mount unlocks account-wide.
  • Rare among collectors — due to the low drop chance and the daily loot lock, the Ancient Salamanther appears in collections only rarely. That makes it an excellent marker of a dedicated collector.
  • Pleasant side farm — while you sweep the rares of the Forbidden Reach for the mount, you simultaneously gather Elemental Overflow, Game iconEsoteric Forbidden Knowledge, Game iconZskera Vault Key, and gear pieces.

How to Obtain

The main method is a daily sweep of every rare enemy on the Forbidden Reach. Each rare has a small chance to drop the Game iconAncient Salamanther, so the more rares you kill per day, the higher your overall chance.

  1. Fly to the Forbidden Reach. If you have not unlocked the zone yet, pick up the intro quest "A Hidden Legacy" from Kurazidah at the Aspects' Plaza in Valdrakken
  2. Install an add-on for tracking rares or subscribe to an enemy spawn timer — it saves hours of waiting
  3. Fly across the island and kill every rare creature available to you that day. Do not forget the rares inside the Zskera Vaults
  4. Loot every enemy — even those not directly counted as a "source" of the mount theoretically have a chance to drop it
  5. Repeat daily after the game reset.

Forbidden Reach Rare Enemies

The island is home to 16 standard rare creatures. Any of them can drop the Game iconAncient Salamanther, although players most often report drops from Vulkanon. Plan your route so you can cover as many rares as possible in a single run.

Rare Enemy Approximate Coordinates Note
Vulkanon ~78, 50 (Siege Incubator) Often cited as a reliable source
Veltrax ~53, 46 (in a cave) A neighboring rare next to Vulkanon

Gaz'rax Eastern part of the island A small elite with a drop

Optimal Farming Route

Preparation

  • Unlock the Forbidden Reach through the intro quest "A Hidden Legacy" from Kurazidah in Valdrakken
  • Level up Dragonriding — without it, getting around the island is significantly slower
  • Install an add-on such as Rare Share: Forbidden Reach or use the in-game rare-tracking tool on the Dragon Isles
  • Prepare a stock of food and potions. Most rares at level 80 can be soloed, but a group speeds up the process

Daily Cycle

  1. Enter the island right after the daily reset. Some rares will already be active
  2. Check the map for pop-up icons and watch the chat channel for other players' calls
  3. Run a route from Morqut Village in the south to the Siege Incubator and on to the northern caves
  4. Be sure to enter the Zskera Vaults if the weekly entrance is activated — there are rares inside as well
  5. Collect Elemental Overflow and vault keys — they will come in handy for other rewards
  6. Close out the day by checking the northwestern coastline and the ports

Group Hunting

  • The easiest way to find a group for rares is through the built-in dungeon finder under the name "Forbidden Reach rares"
  • A group lets you kill tougher rares and gives several mount chances since each member rolls separately
  • Use the teleport to the group leader if your rare is already dead but it is still alive for your allies

Tips

1

Start farming early — even with a daily routine, the average time to obtain the mount reaches several weeks. The sooner you fold the Forbidden Reach into your daily rotation, the faster you finish the collection

2

Do not skip ordinary rare enemies — the community still argues about exactly which rare drops the mount. Most confirmed drops come from various rares, so kill everyone available that day

3

Check the inv_salamanderwatermount_purpleStormhide Salamanther — it is bought from Mythralis in Valdrakken for 2000 Elemental Overflow. It is a great backup with a similar model while you hunt the Ancient one

4

Use weekend surges — on days with bonus events, rares may drop loot more often thanks to the "Elemental Storms" events

5

Watch for pinpoint-spawn announcements — rares appear once every 30 minutes, and the General channel in the Forbidden Reach is often used as an alert

6

Farm the "From Stem to Stern" achievement alongside — during your daily sweeps you also gather the criteria of the meta-achievement that unlocks access to additional rewards

7

Do not forget about alts — the daily loot lock is individual. Each additional character with access to the Forbidden Reach gives a separate chance at the inv_salamanderwatermount_greenAncient Salamanther
