Black Riding Goat
Overview

The
Black Riding Goat is a ground mount added to World of Warcraft in the Mists of Pandaria expansion (patch 5.5.0). It is a large pandaren mountain goat with thick black fur and massive curved horns — a mount traditional to the inhabitants of the Valley of the Four Winds. Taming a stubborn mountain goat is no easy feat, so this mount symbolizes the patience and gentle approach of the pandaren farmers.
The mount is sold by Gina Mudclaw — the quartermaster of The Tillers faction at the Halfhill Market. To buy the reins, you need an Exalted reputation with the The Tillers faction and 1,500 gold. In addition, this is one of three riding goats from the faction: alongside the black one, Gina also sells the
Reins of the Brown Riding Goat and the
Reins of the White Riding Goat.
Why You Want This Mount
- Unique model — a pandaren mountain goat with black fur that cannot be obtained from any other source in the game.
- Collection of three goats — alongside the black one, you can buy the brown and white goats from the same quartermaster, completing the Tillers goat collection in a single trip.
- Full ground mount speed — +60% or +100% depending on your riding skill.
- Account-wide across all characters — once purchased, the mount appears in the collection of all your characters.
- Additional Tillers rewards — on the way to Exalted you unlock access to your own farm at Sunsong Ranch, earn decorative items, cooking recipes, and the Grand Commendation of the Tillers, which speeds up reputation gains on alts by 100%.

At max level (80 in The War Within), the entire Tillers reputation chain is completed quickly and without any combat difficulty — it is purely homestead content with your own farm and daily quests.
How to Reach Halfhill
The Valley of the Four Winds zone is located in the southern part of Pandaria. The Halfhill Market with the Tillers quartermaster is found in the western part of the valley.
- Open the world map and travel to Pandaria. If the continent is unavailable, use the in-game adventure guide window in your faction's capital — from there you can reach the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
- In the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, mount a gryphon or wind rider and fly to Halfhill. Most Pandaria flight points are unlocked after your first visit.
- Land at Halfhill Market. Gina stands next to the central square, across from the main trading tent.
If you have never visited Pandaria before, you can get there through the Horde portal in Orgrimmar or the Alliance portal in Stormwind — both lead to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
How to Reach Exalted with The Tillers
Building reputation with The Tillers works differently than with most factions: the main income comes from your own farm and daily quests in Halfhill. The path to Exalted takes on average two to three weeks of casual play, or less if you complete everything daily.
Step 1. Introductory quest chain
- Fly to Halfhill and pick up the introductory quest from Farmer Yoon at Sunsong Ranch
- Complete the short storyline — it introduces you to The Tillers and grants your first 4 plots on the farm
- Upon completing the chain you reach Friendly standing and unlock the daily quests
Step 2. Daily quests
Daily quests offer roughly 5 tasks from the Halfhill residents (ordinary chores around the market) and 1–4 tasks for planting specific crops on your farm.
- A full set of dailies grants about 1,075 reputation per day
- Dailies reset each game day
- The single-seed planting quest from Farmer Yoon grants 350 reputation — this is the easiest way to start
Step 3. Grand Commendation of the Tillers
Upon reaching Honored, buy the
Grand Commendation of the Tillers from Gina Mudclaw for a small amount of gold. The item binds to the account and increases reputation gains with The Tillers by +100% for all characters on your account permanently.
Step 4. Farm expansion
As your reputation grows, you receive quests to expand the farm:
Reputation | Expansion quest | Plots after completion |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Introductory chain | 4 |
| Friendly | First expansion | 8 |
| Honored | Second expansion | 12 |
| Exalted | Inheriting the Land | 16 |
The more plots you unlock, the more seeds you plant each day — this directly speeds up both reputation and the gathering of cooking ingredients.
What to Buy from Gina Mudclaw
In addition to the black goat, the quartermaster offers the following mounts and items (all at Exalted):
Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| 450 gold | |
| 1,500 gold | |
| 2,925 gold |
If you are deliberately going for the goat collection, it makes sense to first save up 4,875 gold and buy all three mounts in a single trip.
Farm Friendship System
Alongside the faction reputation, The Tillers feature a unique system of personal friendship with 10 residents of Halfhill. This is not required to buy the black goat, but it comes in handy for other rewards and related achievements.
List of the 10 Halfhill residents:
- Gina Mudclaw
- Tina Mudclaw
- Haohan Mudclaw
- Old Hillpaw
- Jogu the Drunk
- Sho
- Chee Chee
- Ella
- Farmer Fung
- Fish Fellreed
Each of them has six relationship tiers: Stranger, Acquaintance, Buddy, Friend, Good Friend, Best Friend. Relationships grow from daily gifts (completing storyline quests, items from the farm given in exchange for reputation) and unlock unique decorative options and rare bonuses on the farm itself.
Farming Optimization
Do your dailies every day
Skipping dailies is wasteful: 1,000+ reputation per day is the main source of gains. We recommend adding the Tillers farm to your list of mandatory daily activities alongside the core chores in your current expansion.
Log in on several characters
After buying the Grand Commendation on one character, all your alts will receive double reputation. If you are collecting mounts on your main, there is no point in leveling alts for these reins (the mount becomes account-wide as soon as it is purchased).
Don't forget the plantings
Each plant-and-harvest cycle gives you cooking materials, rare seeds for special quests (for example, Songbell Seed for reputation with the Celestials), and gifts for the friendship system. Start the day with planting, then do the rest of your dailies — by the end of the rotation the harvest will be ready to gather.
Budget ahead of time
For all three goat mounts and the Grand Commendation you will need about 5,000 gold in total. At max level this is easily earned over 1–2 evenings of completing quests or selling profession materials.
Tips
Start with Yoon's planting quest — you get 350 reputation for 1 minute of work and close out the fastest daily of the day.
Use the plots for your ingredients — beyond reputation, the farm provides cooking materials, herbs, ore, and even small pets. While you grind reputation, the farm pays for itself in resources.
Don't buy the mount right after Exalted — first pick up all the quests for the final farm expansion to 16 plots. These quests are part of the grind themselves and require no extra time.
Check Halfhill for rare mobs — during your daily rotation you may encounter rare enemies of the Valley of the Four Winds, who have a chance to drop other rare items.
The mount is account-wide — after the first purchase the black goat appears in the collection of all your characters. Buying it again on an alt is pointless.
