Get Black War Ram mount
Overview

The
Black War Ram is a ground PvP mount of the Alliance faction, added back in the original World of Warcraft and conceived as the battle version of the dwarven ram for players with a high PvP rank. It is a massive black ram with thick fur, steel barding and a war caparison, recognizable by its broad horns and heavy gait — the very image of the "dwarven cavalry" that traditionally defends Ironforge in battle.
In the modern game the mount is sold for 15
Marks of Honor by Lieutenant Karter — the mount quartermaster at the Hall of Champions in Stormwind. No PvP rank, title or battleground faction reputation is required anymore: any Alliance character who saves up 15 Marks in battle gains access to the purchase. On patch 11.1 The War Within the mount is fully current and remains one of the most accessible ways to complete the collection of Alliance "Black War" racial mounts.
Why you want this mount
- Completes the Alliance "Black War" mount set — together with the
Black Battlestrider, the
Black War Steed and others, the ram is part of the classic set of PvP mounts for Alliance races. All five are sold by the same vendor at the same price - A unique model among rams — unlike the ordinary Ironforge dwarven rams, the war version is larger, painted black with brass inlays and has its own barding model. In appearance and animation it is a fundamentally different mount that cannot be earned through quests or reputation
- Historical Commander-rank legacy — originally the mount was granted only to dwarves and gnomes with the PvP title "Commander" and above. In patch 2.0.1 the rank requirement was removed, and later the racial restrictions were lifted as well. Now any Alliance race can buy and use this ram, but in the collection it is still considered a PvP reward
- A cheap way to push mount-count achievements — 15 Marks of Honor are farmed in a few wins in random battlegrounds or in a single epic battle. The purchase advances progress in "Leading the Cavalry", "Mountain o' Mounts" and other meta achievements based on the number of mounts
- Account-wide access — after using the item the mount goes into the shared journal and unlocks for all Alliance characters on the account, regardless of class and race. Buy it once — use it on all of them
Since patch 7.0 (Legion) the old grind of separate battleground marks was removed from the game, and all PvP mounts of this kind were switched to a single Marks of Honor currency. Separate Alterac Valley, Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin marks are no longer needed to buy the ram. In patch 9.0.1 the level threshold was lowered from 40 to 17, and the required riding skill from "Journeyman" to "Apprentice", so you can ride the mount right at the start of your PvP journey.
How to reach Lieutenant Karter
Lieutenant Karter stands at the entrance to the Hall of Champions in the Old Town of Stormwind. This is the same courtyard where PvP quests are given out, where battleground quartermasters and arena organizers stand. Even though the ram is historically tied to dwarves and Ironforge, in the modern game the entire set of Alliance PvP mounts is sold in one place — in Stormwind.
Route to the vendor
- Teleport to Stormwind via your Hearthstone, a portal from any major The War Within hub, or through the main portal from Valdrakken and the Bastion
- Move from the Mage Quarter or the Trade District toward the Old Town — it is located northeast of the center of Stormwind
- The Hall of Champions is in the eastern part of the Old Town, its entrance decorated with Alliance banners and guards
- Lieutenant Karter stands right in front of the doors of the Hall of Champions, in the open square next to the rest of the PvP quartermasters
- Coordinates for the navigator:
If your character is Horde
The mount is bound to the Alliance and cannot be bought on a Horde character. The only way for a Horde player to get this ram is to create or transfer a character to the Alliance side, buy the mount there and use it through the shared journal of allied Alliance characters. On a Horde character the mount will not appear in the journal.
How to get Marks of Honor
Marks of Honor are the unified PvP currency introduced in patch 7.0 along with Legion and still current today. At level 80 in The War Within they can be earned in practically any PvP activity.
Main sources
- Regular battlegrounds — for a win you receive a reward chest that is guaranteed to contain Marks of Honor. A loss also gives a smaller amount of Marks. The fastest short battlegrounds are Warsong Gulch and Temple of Kotmogu
- Epic battlegrounds — Alterac Valley, Isle of Conquest and epic Warsong Gulch give more Marks per win but take longer. They are optimal if you are farming several mounts from the PvP vendor at once
- 2v2 and 3v3 Skirmish arenas — unrated arenas give a few Marks of Honor for each win and do not require a premade team
- Rated arenas and battlegrounds — give an increased amount of Marks of Honor plus Conquest points if you are leveling the PvP season at the same time
- Weekly PvP quests in Stormwind — given out by the local PvP quartermasters near the Hall of Champions. The reward is small, but it is convenient to pick them up on the way to Lieutenant Karter herself
How much time it takes
With active play 15 Marks are gathered in roughly 40–60 minutes:
- 3–5 wins in regular battlegrounds at 10–15 minutes each
- Or 1–2 wins in epic Alterac Valley
- Or 8–10 wins in Skirmish arenas
If your goal is to collect all five "Black War" mounts from Lieutenant Karter at once, budget for 75 Marks and 3–5 hours of focused PvP farming.
Buying the mount
- Walk right up to Lieutenant Karter at the Hall of Champions
- Right-click to open the trade window
- Make sure your bag holds at least 15
Marks of Honor - In the list of goods find the
Black War Ram and confirm the purchase - Open the item with a right-click — the mount spell is automatically added to your collection, and the ram becomes available to all Alliance characters on the account
- If you do not yet have the "Apprentice Riding" skill, you can learn it from any riding trainer in the Alliance capitals
What else is worth buying from the same vendor
Lieutenant Karter sells the full set of Alliance "Black War" racial mounts. The prices and conditions are the same — 15 Marks of Honor, no reputation or rank requirements:
Mount | Item |
|---|---|
| Black War Ram | |
| Black War Steed | |
| Black War Tiger | |
| Black Battlestrider | |
| Black War Elekk |
It is optimal to spend a single vendor visit on the whole set — this closes five entries in the mount collection and advances all the related achievements at once.
Tips
Grab the mount right after your first battleground wins — 15 Marks are gathered quickly, and the purchase closes an achievement and immediately gives a mount you can use as early as level 17. Don't put it off for "someday later".
Farm Marks in epic battlegrounds if you need several mounts — epic Alterac Valley and Isle of Conquest give noticeably more Marks per run, and the long matches are offset by the fact that you level achievements and the PvP season at the same time.
Buy the whole set from Lieutenant Karter at once — five racial "Black War" mounts cost only 75 Marks of Honor. This is one of the cheapest ways to quickly add five lines to your mount counter and close the meta achievements for their number.
Keep a stock of Marks of Honor on hand — Lieutenant Karter has a closed assortment, but Marks are also needed for transmog sets from old PvP seasons and for relics. A surplus of 20–30 Marks in your bag will speed up any later purchase.
Status in The War Within — the ram and the vendor have not changed since patch 7.0, and since patch 9.0.1 the mount can be used from level 17. As of patch 11.1 the item is fully available, remains the most "dwarven" Alliance PvP mount from the historical set and requires neither ranks nor reputation. There have been no announcements about removal or price changes.
