Overview

Bloodmaw Magus-Blade

Game iconBloodmaw Magus-Blade is a one-handed sword added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a caster weapon: it has intellect on it, so the appearance counts toward the collection for classes that wield one-handed swords and use magic — Mages, Warlocks, and Priests.

Visually it is an elegant, slightly curved blade with a dark guard and crimson accents along the edge — a recognizable "magical" weapon model of the Outland era. Against the crude ogre loot of Gruul's Lair, the sword looks surprisingly refined and delicate, which is exactly what makes it appealing for caster transmogs.

Source

The sword drops in Gruul's Lair raid from the final boss — Gruul the Dragonkiller.

  • Drop source: Gruul the Dragonkiller, the last of the raid's two bosses.
  • Drop chance is around 12%, which is fairly generous for a raid appearance.
  • Limit — the raid's weekly lockout: a Gruul kill counts once per week.
  • Only one difficulty: Gruul's Lair is a The Burning Crusade-era raid without the modern difficulty-tier system.

Gruul's Lair is a 25-player Outland raid that belongs to long-outdated content, so at Midnight max level it can be soloed without trouble. No attunement chain is required to enter.

The entrance is in the north of Blade's Edge Mountains. The easiest way is to fly to Evergrove, then head north along the road from Ruuan Weald and travel through the canyon to the large cave in the far wall of the ravine — that is where the raid entrance is located. The approximate entrance coordinates are around /way 64 23 in Blade's Edge Mountains.

Who It Suits Visually

  • The elegant silhouette and crimson accents make the blade a great choice for Mage and Warlock looks in a dark-red palette.
  • It pairs well with Outland cloth sets — especially with sets in dark and bloody tones.
  • It fits concepts of battle mages and dark casters where you specifically want a bladed weapon rather than a staff.
  • It contrasts with light cloth — a debatable but striking combination where the sword serves as a dark accent.
  • It is fitting for looks styled after the classic The Burning Crusade era.

Tips

1

Gruul's Lair has been outdated for many expansions, so farming is built around solo runs once a week.

2

The optimal classes for fast solo farming are any durable specs with high damage; Gruul himself falls in mere seconds at Midnight max level.

3

Remember the weekly lockout: Gruul gives loot once a week, so the farm stretches over several weeks until the appearance you want drops.

4

Before Gruul stands the raid's first boss — High King Maulgar; you do not have to clear him to reach Gruul, but along the way he drops other appearance loot.

5

The sword is a caster weapon, and it counts toward the appearance collection only for classes able to equip one-handed swords and wearing cloth or leather with intellect.

6

The drop chance of around 12% is relatively high, but the sword may not drop in a single run, so plan for several weeks.

7

Fly to Evergrove in Blade's Edge Mountains and move north — this is the fastest route to the raid entrance.
