Overview

Cobalt Primordial Direhorn

Cobalt Primordial Direhorn is a rare ground mount added in Patch 5.2 "The Thunder King." It is a massive cobalt-blue triceratops from the primordial direhorn family. The mount drops at an extremely low chance from the world boss Oondasta on the Isle of Giants.

Why You Want This Mount

  • One of the rarest mounts in the game — owned by fewer than 2% of players
  • Striking appearance: a large, armored dinosaur in a deep blue hue
  • Part of a collection of ten primordial direhorn variants in different colors (cobalt, jade, slate, amber, and more)
  • A ground mount with +60% or +100% speed depending on your riding skill
  • A great addition to themed transmog sets in a Pandaria or dinosaur-hunting style

Requirements

  • A character at level 10 or higher
  • Riding skill: Apprentice
  • The mount is account-bound — once obtained, it's available to all your characters

How to Get to the Isle of Giants

The Isle of Giants lies north of Kun-Lai Summit in Pandaria. You can get there several ways:

  1. Fly directly. If your character has flying unlocked in Pandaria, simply fly north from Kun-Lai Summit across the sea.
  2. Portal via Orgrimmar/Stormwind. Use the portal in your capital that leads to Pandaria (Temple of the Jade Serpent or Shrine of Seven Stars/Shrine of Two Moons), then fly north.
  3. Flight Master's Whistle or a dynamic-flight mount — fly over from anywhere in Pandaria.

Oondasta's coordinates on the Isle of Giants:

/way #507 50.0 56.0 Oondasta

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — Preparation

Pick a character at level 10+ with flying available. At the current max level (90), Oondasta poses no challenge and can be soloed in a few seconds.

Step 2 — Reach the Isle of Giants

Open the Pandaria map and head to the northern tip of Kun-Lai Summit. The Isle of Giants sits in the sea to the north. Fly to the coordinates:

/way #507 50.0 56.0 Oondasta

Step 3 — Find and Kill Oondasta

Oondasta is a huge devilsaur you can't miss. At level 90, the boss dies in a few hits.

Just attack the boss and grab the loot.

Step 4 — Check the Loot

After the kill, open the loot window. If the Reins of the Cobalt Primordial Direhorn didn't drop, don't be discouraged — the chance is extremely small. Come back next week.

Farm Optimization

Multiple Characters Are the Key to Success

Since loot from Oondasta is available once per week per character, the most effective way to boost your odds is to kill the boss on as many characters as possible each week.

  • Create and level up extra characters to at least level 10 with riding skill
  • Each week (Wednesday reset) visit the Isle of Giants on every character
  • With 10 characters, your weekly chance increases significantly

Optimal Timing

  • Loot reset: every Wednesday (for EU realms)
  • Oondasta respawn: roughly every 15 minutes, so you won't have to wait long
  • Oondasta is available to all factions (no tag lock), so any player can kill it, even if someone is already attacking the boss

Tips

1

Black Market Auction House. The mount occasionally appears on the Black Market Auction House. If you have spare gold, keep an eye on the listings — it's an alternative way to obtain it.

2

Don't use a Mogu rune. A bonus roll using a Mogu Rune of Fate on outdated content does not grant an additional chance at the mount in current game versions — that mechanic was only relevant during Mists of Pandaria.

3

Bind your Hearthstone. If you farm the mount regularly, bind one of your alts' Hearthstones to a tavern in Pandaria for quick access.

4

Patience is your best weapon. With a sub-1% chance and one attempt per week, the farm can drag on for months. Some players report getting the mount after 500–1000+ attempts.

5

Watch for events. During special events (for example, WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria), the mount may have been purchasable with an alternative currency — keep an eye on announcements.
