Overview

Reins of the Coldflame Tempest

Reins of the Coldflame Tempest is a legendary flying mount in the form of a blue phoenix, added in patch 11.0.5. The mount is a reward for completing the meta-achievement A Cool Twenty Years as part of World of Warcraft's annual anniversary event. The mount first became available during the celebration of the game's 20th anniversary in October 2024.

The design of the Coldflame Tempest is inspired by Blizzard's internal length-of-service awards, as well as by the iconic Ashes of Al'ar mount. The phoenix is colored in cold blue-and-azure tones with frost effects. When you use the /mountspecial command, the mount creates an aurora borealis effect.

Why You Want This Mount

  • A unique legendary-quality flying mount in the shape of an icy phoenix
  • Available for free — it requires no gold and no real money, only completing achievements
  • A spectacular summon animation and a special /mountspecial command with a northern aurora
  • Account-bound — once obtained, it becomes available on all your characters
  • Available during the annual anniversary event, which returns every year

Requirements

  • A character of level 10 or higher
  • The riding skill (at least Apprentice Riding)
  • Access to the World of Warcraft anniversary event (held every year in the fall)

Where the Anniversary Event Takes Place

The anniversary event takes place at the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. When you log in during the event, you will receive the quest "Another Timely Invitation," which will direct you to the celebration grounds.

There are several ways to reach the Caverns of Time:

  • A portal from your faction's capital to the Caverns of Time
  • Flying to Tanaris
  • A hearthstone, if it is set to this zone

How to Obtain the Mount

To obtain the Reins of the Coldflame Tempest, you need to complete the meta-achievement A Cool Twenty Years. It consists of 8 sub-achievements, each tied to a specific activity at the anniversary event. After completing all eight achievements, the mount will automatically appear in your bags.

Progress is tracked account-wide — you can complete individual achievements on different characters.

Sub-achievement 1 — I Have That One!

Identifier: I Have That One!

Requirement: Match one mount during the Mount Mania mini-game.

How to complete:

  1. The Mount Mania mini-game runs every hour during xx:45 — xx:53
  2. The host will summon a specific mount and ask participants to summon the same one
  3. Summon the mount that matches the one shown — if you have it in your collection
  4. You only need to match once to earn the achievement

This is the easiest achievement of all eight. If you have an extensive mount collection, you will manage it in a matter of minutes.

Sub-achievement 2 — Fashion Critic

Identifier: Fashion Critic

Requirement: Vote once at the Fashion Frenzy contest.

How to complete:

  1. The Fashion Frenzy contest runs every hour during xx:15 — xx:20
  2. Approach the stage where the fashion show takes place
  3. Take a voting ribbon from the table next to the organizer
  4. Vote for the participant's outfit you liked best

A single vote is enough to earn the achievement.

Sub-achievement 3 — Pet Mischief

Identifier: Pet Mischief

Requirement: Use a pet transformer to take on the appearance of your battle pet.

How to complete:

  1. Find the pet corner on the anniversary event grounds
  2. Next to Petra stands a crate of pet supplies
  3. Take the "Pet Mirror" from the crate
  4. Summon any battle pet
  5. Use the mirror on the summoned pet — you will take on its appearance
  6. Stroll around the event grounds in that appearance

The achievement is credited as soon as you transform.

Sub-achievement 4 — Balloonist

Identifier: Balloonist

Requirement: Take a ride on a festive hot-air balloon.

How to complete:

  1. The balloons are launched by Izaandra next to the summoning stone at the Caverns of Time
  2. Wait for the next balloon to appear
  3. Click the balloon to begin the flight
  4. Take the balloon ride — the achievement will be credited

This is one of the fastest achievements — it takes literally a couple of minutes.

Sub-achievement 6 — An Original

Identifier: An Original

Requirement: Defeat at least one of the classic world bosses during the anniversary event.

Available bosses:

Boss Location
Azuregos Azshara
Lord Kazzak Blasted Lands
Lethon Hinterlands
Emeriss Duskwood
Taerar Dustwallow Marsh
Ysondre Ashenvale

To complete the achievement, it is enough to kill one of the listed bosses. They appear in the open world at their classic spots. During the anniversary event, the bosses always have players around, so joining a group is no trouble.

Sub-achievement 7 — A Gatecrasher

Identifier: A Gatecrasher

Requirement: Defeat at least one of the expansion world bosses during the anniversary event.

Available bosses:

Boss Location
Doomwalker Tanaris (near the Caverns of Time)
Sha of Anger Tanaris (near the Caverns of Time)
Archavon the Stone Watcher Tanaris (near the Caverns of Time)

All three bosses appear right in Tanaris, not far from the celebration grounds. It is enough to kill one of them. These bosses are usually killed by large groups of players — just join the fight and deal damage.

Sub-achievement 8 — Codex Editor: Ahn'Qiraj

Identifier: Codex Editor: Ahn'Qiraj

Requirement: Complete the "Chromie's Codex" scenario.

How to complete:

  1. Talk to Chromie on the anniversary event grounds in Tanaris
  2. Queue for the "Chromie's Codex" scenario through Chromie or via the dungeon finder
  3. Complete the scenario to the end — it is an instanced activity with puzzle elements
  4. Once finished, the achievement will be credited

Optimal Completion Order

All eight achievements can be completed in one or two days, provided you are willing to spend time on Lorewalker Cho's sessions. Here is the optimal plan:

  1. First hour: Arrive at the Caverns of Time. At xx:00, attend Cho's tale (Peanut Gallery). Then at xx:15, vote at the fashion contest (Fashion Critic). Use the pet mirror (Pet Mischief) and take a balloon ride (Balloonist).
  2. Between activities: Kill one of the expansion world bosses in Tanaris (A Gatecrasher). Queue for Chromie's Codex (Codex Editor: Ahn'Qiraj).
  3. At xx:30: Attend Cho's second tale to accumulate reactions.
  4. At xx:45: Take part in Mount Mania (I Have That One!).
  5. Open world: Set off to kill one of the classic world bosses (An Original).
  6. Subsequent hours: Keep attending Cho's tales until you have gathered 50 reactions.

Tips

1

Start with the "Peanut Gallery" achievement. This is the only sub-achievement that requires a long time — 50 reactions across several story sessions. All the other achievements can be done in parallel while you wait for the next session.

2

Use the "Throw Rotten Apple" reaction. It has no cooldown and lets you gather reactions faster during Lorewalker Cho's tales.

3

The bosses in Tanaris are the easiest to kill. Doomwalker, Sha of Anger, and Archavon the Stone Watcher are located right by the event grounds. Groups for them form constantly — just join the fight.

4

For the classic bosses, use the group finder. Open the group finder tool and look for a group for the boss you need. This is faster than flying to the zone and waiting for the boss to appear on your own.

5

Keep an eye on the event schedule. The mini-games run strictly on schedule: Cho's tales at xx:00 and xx:30, Fashion Frenzy at xx:15, Mount Mania at xx:45. Plan your visit so you don't miss the activity you need.

6

The mount is available every year. If you didn't manage to complete all the achievements this year, your progress is saved. You can return to it during the next anniversary event and finish off the remaining achievements.
