Overview

Curious Crystalsniffer

Game iconCurious Crystalsniffer is a ground mount added in patch 9.2 "Eternity's End" of the Shadowlands expansion. It is a bronze-and-black wombat created through the protoform synthesis system in Zereth Mortis. Most wombats love to dig, but these sniffers in particular have an unerring instinct for crystals lying deep underground, and they gather around large deposits.

To obtain the mount, you'll need to find the Game iconSchematic: Crystalsniffer in the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid, gather the required reagents and head to the Pridefall Hamlet's Protoform Forge in Zereth Mortis.

Why you want this mount

  • Guaranteed acquisition — once you've obtained the schematic and gathered the reagents, the mount is crafted with no element of randomness. No percentage drop chance off a boss
  • Unique wombat model — one of the four wombat color variants from Zereth Mortis. The model stands out with its "squat" gait and amusing animation
  • Low entry barrier — character level 10 and basic riding skill are enough to use it. The mount is available to all characters on the account once added to the collection
  • One-time effort — you only need to clear the Sepulcher of the First Ones up to the second boss once and gather the reagents to get the mount forever
  • Collector's value — old raids lose relevance in new patches, but their mounts remain a pleasant reminder of Shadowlands

How to obtain

To craft the mount, you must meet three conditions: unlock the protoform synthesis system, find the schematic in the raid and gather the reagents.

  1. Unlock access to Zereth Mortis by completing the patch 9.2 starting quest chain.
  2. Complete the Zereth Mortis story campaign through the chapter "The Last Song" inclusive — this unlocks protoform synthesis and schematic assimilation
  3. Head to the Sepulcher of the First Ones on any difficulty
  4. Kill the second boss, Dausegne
  5. After the boss dies, return to the second arena hall (where the second phase of the fight takes place) and pick up the Game iconSchematic: Crystalsniffer from the chest next to the glowing plant in the northern part of the room
  6. Assimilate the schematic, receiving the quest "Reconstructing the Schematic: Curious Crystalsniffer"
  7. Gather the reagents: 400 Game iconGenesis Mote, 1 Game iconCrystallized Echo of the First Song and 1 Game iconWombat Matrix
  8. Head to the Protoform Forge in Zereth Mortis and create the mount

Where to find the schematic in the Sepulcher of the First Ones

Dausegne is the second boss of the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid, and the schematic you need is hidden in their location. An important detail: the schematic only appears in the room after the boss dies, and when the raid is reset the walls between the arena halls close, making the schematic inaccessible for that lockout.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Gather a group or use Raid Finder for the Sepulcher of the First Ones. At max level (90) the raid can be cleared solo or with a small group on any difficulty
  2. Kill Dausegne. In the second phase of the fight the arena moves between several rooms — remember where the battle ends
  3. After the boss dies, do not leave or reset the raid. Return to the second arena room (approximate coordinates 63, 52)
  4. In the northern part of the room, find a small chest next to a glowing plant. Pick up the Game iconSchematic: Crystalsniffer
  5. Leave the raid and head to Zereth Mortis to assimilate the schematic

Important restrictions

  • The schematic only appears after the boss is killed. You cannot come, grab the schematic and leave without a fight
  • If you reset the raid or use the "reset all instances" command, the walls will close and the schematic will become inaccessible until the next lockout
  • The schematic lies in a chest, not dropped directly by the boss — it can be missed if you teleport straight to the next boss
  • Any difficulty works, including Raid Finder — this is the fastest way for collectors

Reagents for crafting

Crafting the mount requires three different reagents. They can be gathered in parallel with progressing the Zereth Mortis campaign.

Genesis Mote — 400 units

Game iconGenesis Mote is the basic protoform synthesis resource, dropping from practically any enemy in Zereth Mortis. They can be obtained in the following ways:

  • Regular mobs in Zereth Mortis — a small amount from each
  • World quests in Zereth Mortis — around 10–15 motes per quest
  • The weekly quest "Patterns Within Patterns" — gives 62–70 motes
  • Killing the world boss — 80 motes weekly
  • Devourers spawning from blue portals — large batches

Crystallized Echo of the First Song — 1 unit

Game iconCrystallized Echo of the First Song is a special reagent gathered by hand in Zereth Mortis. The echo is found mainly near the waterfalls around the entrance to the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid. The fifth specimen lies to the east of the Catalyst Gardens. In total there are several gathering points across the location, and the echo can be picked up without any fighting.

Wombat Matrix — 1 unit

Game iconWombat Matrix is an item with a low drop chance from wombats in Zereth Mortis. You can farm them in two ways:

  • Kill wombats across all of Zereth Mortis, especially in the central part of the zone
  • Buy the matrix at the auction house — often this is faster than waiting for the drop

How to unlock protoform synthesis

Without completing the Zereth Mortis campaign you won't be able to create mounts through protoform synthesis. The sequence of steps:

  1. Unlock access to Zereth Mortis through the patch 9.2 starting quest in Korthia
  2. Complete chapters 1–3 of the campaign, getting acquainted with the local story
  3. Complete the chapter "The Last Song" — it is the one that activates the ability to use the Protoform Forge
  4. After completing the chain you gain the ability to assimilate found schematics and create mounts, pets and toys

Tips

1

Don't reset the raid after killing Dausegne — this is the main beginner mistake. If you accidentally use the reset command or re-enter the instance incorrectly, the walls will close and the schematic will be lost until next week

2

Check your lockout — the mount and all its components are tied to the raid's weekly lockout. If you killed Dausegne this week, you'll have to wait for the reset

3

Gather all schematics in one run — several schematics for different mounts and pets are hidden in the Sepulcher of the First Ones. Study the map in advance and grab everything available in one raid visit

4

Stockpile Genesis Motes in advance — 400 is a lot, but they accumulate on their own during any activity in Zereth Mortis. If you actively played in patch 9.2, you probably already have a stash in your bags

5

The auction house saves hours — the inv_misc_celestial-mapWombat Matrix may not drop even after killing fifty wombats. If time is worth more than gold, check the auction house

6

Find the Crystallized Echo by the map — the echo spawn points are fixed. Use the TomTom addon or the Wowhead map to avoid wasting time searching

7

The mount is available to the whole account — once created, inv_progenitorwombatmount_darkredCurious Crystalsniffer becomes available to all your characters. Craft it on whichever one is most convenient

8

Combine with other schematics — the protoform synthesis system lets you obtain a whole collection of wombats and other patch 9.2 mounts.
