Goldenmane's Reins

ability_mount_ridinghorseGoldenmane's Reins — a rare ground mount in the form of a golden palomino horse, added in the Battle for Azeroth expansion (patch 8.0.1). The mount drops with a very low chance from humanoid mobs in Stormsong Valley and Tiragarde Sound on Kul Tiras. The item is not soulbound on pickup and can be sold or bought on the Auction House.

According to in-game lore, Lord Stormsong ordered his minions to steal this horse from the Norwington Estate in Tiragarde Sound — so captivated was he by the magnificent golden mane of the steed.

Why You Want This Mount

  • A beautiful golden horse with a unique model that stands out among standard mounts
  • The item is Bind on Use, so Goldenmane's Reins can be sold on the Auction House for tens of thousands of gold
  • Extremely low drop chance (~0.02%) makes the mount rare — you won't see it often
  • Counts toward your overall mount collection for achievements
  • One of the few mounts obtainable simply by killing regular mobs in the open world

How to Obtain

Goldenmane's Reins drops as loot from humanoid mobs in Stormsong Valley and Tiragarde Sound on the continent of Kul Tiras. This is not a boss drop but a so-called zone drop — the item can drop from any eligible humanoid in these zones.

Main mob types that drop the mount:

Enemy Type Zone Examples
Tidesages Stormsong Valley Tidesage Sea Caller, Tidesage Initiate, Tidesage Archivist
Irontide Pirates Tiragarde Sound, Stormsong Valley Irontide Coin Runner, Saltwind Cannoneer
Stormsong Loyalists Stormsong Valley Stormsong Loyalist, Stormsong Marshal
Other Humanoids Stormsong Valley Shipyard Deserter, Frail Sailor

Steps:

  1. Travel to Kul Tiras (details in the section below)
  2. Head to Stormsong Valley — the primary farming zone
  3. Find a cluster of humanoid mobs (best spot — The Brineworks, coordinates below)
  4. Kill mobs, looting each one
  5. The mount will appear in loot as the item ability_mount_ridinghorseGoldenmane's Reins
  6. Use the item to learn the mount, or sell it on the Auction House

How to Get to Stormsong Valley

Stormsong Valley is a zone in northern Kul Tiras. How you get there depends on your faction.

Alliance

  1. Use the portal to Boralus from the Mage Tower in Stormwind
  2. From Boralus, fly to a flight point in Stormsong Valley — for example, Brennadam or Fort Daelin
  3. From there, head to The Brineworks

Horde

  1. Go to Dazar'alor and find the ship Banshee's Wail
  2. Speak to Dread-Admiral Tattersail to sail to Kul Tiras
  3. This requires completing the introductory War Campaign quest chain for the Horde in Battle for Azeroth and establishing a foothold on Kul Tiras
  4. After your first visit, a portal to Kul Tiras will appear in the Portal Room in Dazar'alor
  5. Fly to Stormsong Valley and head to The Brineworks

Requirements: There are no special prerequisites for farming — the zone is accessible from level 10 as long as you can reach Kul Tiras. Mobs scale to your level.

Farming Optimization

Best Spot: The Brineworks

The Brineworks is the most popular location for farming Goldenmane's Reins. It has a high density of humanoid mobs that respawn quickly when actively cleared.

Group Farming (2x4)

The most efficient method is 2x4 farming:

  1. Gather 8 players and split into 2 groups of 4
  2. Both groups farm in the same area — The Brineworks
  3. The mechanic works as follows: up to 5 players can tag a mob, and if the fifth is in a group, the entire group receives loot
  4. At high kill speeds, the accelerated respawn mechanism triggers, significantly increasing kills per hour

Recommended Classes

Class Advantage
Monk (Brewmaster) Black Ox Statue pulls mobs to one spot
Druid (Balance) Powerful AoE abilities, instant casts
Hunter Instant attacks, traps for control, high mobility
Mage Strong AoE abilities, Flurry for quick group elimination

For group farming, having one Brewmaster Monk is optimal: they place the Black Ox Statue in the center while 2–3 players gather mobs from all sides and bring them to the statue.

Solo Farming

Solo farming is possible but less efficient. At level 80, mobs in Stormsong Valley pose no threat, and you can mass-kill them with any class. However, mob respawn rate during solo farming is noticeably lower.

Approximate cycle time: 2–3 minutes for a full loop around The Brineworks when solo farming. In a 2x4 group — continuous killing with no downtime.

Farming on Alts

Since the item is not soulbound on pickup, you can farm on multiple characters simultaneously (on different accounts) or transfer the found mount to your main via mail or the Auction House.

Tips

  • Check the Auction House before farming. The price of Goldenmane's Reins on the AH can range from 30,000 to 150,000 gold depending on the server. Sometimes it's more efficient to buy the mount than to spend hours farming.
  • Use the LootAppraiser addon or similar. It will instantly notify you when a valuable item appears in loot — so you won't miss the mount among regular junk.
  • Loot everything. In addition to the mount, mobs drop cloth gear, green and blue Battle for Azeroth items that can be sold on the Auction House for transmog.
  • Don't forget about side loot. The Brineworks can also yield other valuable items and materials.
  • Look for groups in the Group Finder. Open the Group Finder (press I) and search for a group using the keyword "Goldenmane" or "Brineworks" — other players often organize group farming sessions.
  • Use luck potions (if available) for an additional chance at valuable items.
  • Time of day matters. During low server activity hours, competition for mobs is minimal, which speeds up solo farming.
