Infested Necroray
Overview

Infested Necroray is an epic flying mount added in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands (patch 9.0.1). It is one of the three necrorays of the Necrolords covenant of Maldraxxus: a large manaray with dark mottled hide whose body is covered in a bioluminescent layer of fungal spores. The egg's description reads: "Necrorays lay their eggs in small clusters within the folds and cavities of decaying fungal blooms."
The mount drops randomly from the
Oozing Necroray Egg, which is produced from the
Necroray Egg after three real-time days. The egg itself has a small chance to drop from two reward containers for a call of Maldraxxus:
Tribute of the Ambitious and
Tribute of the Duty-Bound. In patch 10.2.7 the egg's drop chance was noticeably increased, which made farming considerably more comfortable at the Midnight max level.
Why you want this mount
- Flying in all old zones — the Infested Necroray is a flying mount and immediately gains a +150% or +310% movement speed bonus depending on your riding skill
- One of the few manarays in the collection — the skeletonized manaray model with spores is unique to Maldraxxus and visually differs from the classic naga manarays of Nazjatar
- A shared source for three mounts at once — a single oozing necroray egg randomly drops either the Infested, the
Bulbous Necroray, or the
Pestilent Necroray, so you close out the whole series in parallel - No Necrolords membership required — the egg drops regardless of your chosen covenant, as long as you complete a call for Maldraxxus
- Increased chance in modern expansions — after patch 10.2.7 the necroray egg's drop chance is significantly higher than in the original Shadowlands
- Account-wide availability — once learned, the mount is added to the collection of all your characters regardless of faction and class
How to obtain
The path to the Infested Necroray is split into three mandatory steps: get a call to Maldraxxus, knock the necroray egg out of a reward container, wait three days and open the oozing necroray egg.
- Complete the Shadowlands introductory campaign and gain access to Oribos and Maldraxxus. Joining the Necrolords is not required — calls to Maldraxxus come to players of any covenant
- Check the bulletin board in your covenant sanctum daily. When a call specifically to Maldraxxus appears, take it and complete it — the reward is given as a Tribute of the Ambitious or a Tribute of the Duty-Bound depending on the call type
- Open the reward container. With a small chance it will contain a necroray egg
- Put the egg in your bag and wait three real-time days. When the timer expires it will turn into an oozing necroray egg
- Right-click the oozing egg. It is guaranteed to grant one of the three mounts — the Infested, the Bulbous or the Pestilent Necroray
- If a different necroray dropped this time, keep farming Maldraxxus calls on the same character until you get the Infested Necroray
Requirements and preparation
- A character of level 45 or higher. By the time of Midnight this threshold is reached automatically while completing the base campaign
- Access to Oribos and Maldraxxus. To get this it is enough to complete the Shadowlands introductory line with Bolvar Fordragon
- Any Shadowlands covenant: Kyrian, Venthyr, Night Fae or Necrolords. Calls to Maldraxxus come to everyone, although for the Necrolords they are statistically more frequent due to the tie to their home zone
- A free bag slot for the
Necroray Egg for three days — the egg occupies one slot and cannot be placed in the bank without interrupting the timer
How to reach Maldraxxus
Maldraxxus is the zone of the Necrolords covenant, which players reach as part of the Shadowlands story. For calls to it to start arriving, you need to fully complete the expansion's starting campaign.
- Go through the Shadowlands introductory corridor: the Shadowlands, the covenant choice, visiting all four zones. The quest line brings you to Maldraxxus among the first four
- Complete the local story line and unlock the covenant bulletin board
- Return to the covenant sanctum daily and check the available calls. Calls to Maldraxxus appear roughly once every four to five days on a single character
- For fast travel use the
Necrolord Hearthstone or a regular hearthstone set to Theater of Pain - If needed, fly to Maldraxxus directly from Oribos via the Path Through the Veil
What kinds of calls there are
In Shadowlands there are three types of daily calls, each with its own reward container and completion condition. For farming the necroray egg, the two that grant a Tribute of the Ambitious and a Tribute of the Duty-Bound are exactly the ones you want.
| Call type | Container | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Kill call | Tribute of the Duty-Bound | Kill a set number of mobs in the zone |
| World quest call | Tribute of the Ambitious | Complete several world quests in the zone |
| Event call | Equivalent containers | Take part in a zone event |
Farm optimization
Daily cycle
Calls refresh once per day. A single character gets one call per day, but only some of them fall on Maldraxxus. That is why the key trick is farming across multiple characters.
- Check the bulletin board in the covenant sanctum every day on all your prepared characters
- If a call to Maldraxxus appears, complete it first
- Open the reward container (Tribute of the Ambitious or Tribute of the Duty-Bound) and check whether a necroray egg dropped
- Put the egg in your bag and set a reminder for three days later — that is exactly when it turns into an oozing necroray egg
Multi-farming on alts
- Prepare several characters of level 45 and higher, each with its own covenant and access to the bulletin board
- Synchronize your schedule: log in and check calls daily, ideally at the same time
- Store every egg with its exact acquisition date. If you have three eggs from different characters at once, you get three independent mount rolls in three days
- Do not destroy spare eggs — every next oozing necroray egg may turn out to be the Infested one you need
Speeding up the timer
The three-day timer only runs while the egg sits in the character's bags or bank. You cannot move it to the guild vault and back — doing so resets the timer. So there is one rule: put it away and wait.
Tips
1
Do not reset the timer — do not pass the necroray egg through the auction house or guild bank. Move it once into your bag and leave it until it hatches
2
After 10.2.7 farming became much faster — if you went after the Infested Necroray back in Shadowlands and were disappointed, try again in Midnight. The egg's drop chance is significantly increased
3
Play any covenant — statistically, calls to Maldraxxus are more frequent for the Necrolords, but it is not a requirement. Any character with a bulletin board in the sanctum has a chance at the egg
4
Take the mount roll calmly — even if a Bulbous or Pestilent Necroray dropped, it is still progress on the series and on collector achievements
5
Watch for a free bag slot — if your bags are full, a new necroray egg may fail to reach you after opening the container. Free up a slot in advance
6
Combine with other Maldraxxus rewards — the same containers drop exclusive gear, covenant cosmetics and anima currency. Farming the egg goes in parallel with leveling up your covenant perks
7
The mount is account-wide — as soon as any of your characters learns the Infested Necroray, it appears in the collection across your entire account

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
