Invincible's Reins
Overview

Invincible's Reins is one of the most coveted mounts in World of Warcraft. Invincible is the legendary horse of Prince Arthas Menethil, who served his master both in life and in death. The mount looks like a winged undead steed with a spectral glow, a semi-transparent body and glowing blue eyes. Obtaining Invincible rewards the Invincible's Reins achievement from the "Mount Feats of Strength" category.
Invincible drops from The Lich King — the final boss of the Icecrown Citadel raid in Icecrown (Northrend). The mount is only available on 25 Heroic difficulty, with a drop chance of around 1%.
Why You Want This Mount
- One of the rarest mounts in the game — a drop chance of around 1% with one attempt per week per character. Many players farm Invincible for years across a dozen alts
- Iconic appearance — Arthas's spectral winged horse is instantly recognizable and is a symbol of one of the main villains of the Warcraft universe
- A Feat of Strength — obtaining the mount rewards a unique achievement that is visible to all players
- Flying and ground mount — Invincible works as both a flying and ground mount, with speed scaling to your riding skill
- Account-wide — once obtained, the mount appears in the collection of all your characters
Requirements and How to Get There
Requirements
- A level 90 character (recommended for the fastest possible run, although a solo run is possible as early as level 50)
- Riding skill: Apprentice (ground mode) or Expert (flying mode)
- Raid difficulty: 25 players, Heroic mode — the mount does not drop on other difficulties
How to Get to Icecrown Citadel
- Head to Dalaran (Northrend). The portal is available from Stormwind or Orgrimmar
- From Dalaran, fly south into the Icecrown zone
- The raid entrance is located on the southern side of Icecrown Citadel
- Before entering the raid, set the difficulty: right-click your character portrait, choose "Dungeon Difficulty" → "25 Player (Heroic)"
Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining
Step 1: Set the Difficulty
Before entering the raid, make sure 25 Player (Heroic) difficulty is selected. This is the only difficulty on which the mount drops.
Step 2: The Lower Spire
Enter the Citadel and clear the first four bosses:
- Lord Marrowgar — the first boss, dies instantly to a level 90 character
- Lady Deathwhisper — wait for the intro dialogue to finish, then attack
- Gunship Battle — get into the cannon before the fight begins, quickly build up Heat (ability 1) to 90, then fire (ability 2) at the enemy gunship. This lets you finish the fight in a few seconds
- Deathbringer Saurfang — a simple fight, killed in a single hit
Step 3: The Plagueworks
After Saurfang, proceed into the Plagueworks. There are three bosses here:
- Festergut — after the victory, activate the valve in his room
- Rotface — after the victory, activate the second valve
- Professor Putricide — available after activating both valves
Step 4: The Crimson Hall
Move on to the Crimson Hall:
- Prince Valanar — three bosses at once, all die instantly
- Blood-Queen Lana'thel — the fight starts automatically when you approach
Step 5: The Frostwing Halls
- Valithria Dreamwalker — this boss can be skipped. Run along the right wall of the room without engaging in combat and head for the elevator behind it. If you have healing abilities, you can heal her, but this is not required to obtain the mount
- Sindragosa — an undead dragon, dies instantly
Step 6: The Frozen Throne
- The Lich King — the final boss. Attack him until his health drops to 10%. At this point the "Fury of Frostmourne" ability triggers — this is a game mechanic that "kills" your character. Do not leave the raid and do not release your spirit. After a few seconds Highlord Tirion Fordring will resurrect you. After his line "Rise up, champions of the Light!" the Lich King will be stunned — deliver the final blow
Loot the Lich King's body. If
Invincible's Reins is in the loot — congratulations.
Farming Optimization
Time per Run
A full clear of Icecrown Citadel on a level 90 character takes 5-10 minutes depending on your class and knowledge of the route. The main time loss comes from the in-game dialogues and roleplay cutscenes that cannot be skipped.
Farming on Multiple Alts
With a ~1% drop chance, one attempt per week on a single character is an extremely slow method. To increase your chances:
- Create several level 80 alts (10 alts = 10 attempts per week, ~10% cumulative chance)
- Each alt should clear the raid on its own — a full raid clear takes 5-10 minutes
- Best classes for a fast clear: Demon Hunter (high mobility), Druid (movement speed in Cat Form), Warrior (Heroic Leap for fast movement)
The Glider Skip (All Classes)
To skip Valithria Dreamwalker and speed up the route through the upper wings, you can use a combination of items:
- Any item with a slow fall effect
- A glider toy (for example, the "Stylish Black Parasol")
Activate both effects and glide past Valithria's room directly to Sindragosa, saving 1-2 minutes on every run.
Alternative Sources
- The Black Market —
Invincible's Reins periodically appear on the Black Market Auction House from Mei Francis. The starting bid is 20,000 gold, but the final price usually reaches several million
Tips
1
Check the difficulty before every entry — if you forget to switch to 25 Heroic, the mount won't drop and your attempt for the week will be wasted. After switching the difficulty, exit and re-enter the raid for the settings to apply
2
Don't release your spirit on the Lich King — when "Fury of Frostmourne" kills your character at 10% boss health, this is a scripted fight mechanic. Wait for the resurrection from Tirion Fordring
3
The cannon in the Gunship Battle — get into the cannon early and build up Heat before the fight begins. This lets you destroy the enemy gunship in a single volley and save a minute on every run
4
Weekly reset — the raid resets every Wednesday (for EU regions) or Tuesday (for US regions). Plan your runs right after the reset so you don't forget
5
The Gunship Battle on re-entry — if you left the raid after the Gunship Battle, you may need to redo this fight on your return. Try to clear the raid in a single session
6
Use a tracking addon — addons like Rarity or SavedInstances will help you track attempts and progress across all your alts
7
Patience is the main weapon — statistically, with 10 alts and weekly farming, the average time to obtain the mount is around 10 weeks. With a single character — around 2 years

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
