Red Dragonhawk

Red Dragonhawk is a flying mount granted to Horde players for the Mountain o' Mounts achievement. To earn the achievement you need to collect 100 mounts available to a single character. The mount was added in patch 3.0.8 of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

Dragonhawks are majestic winged creatures from the Eversong Woods, traditionally used by blood elves as mounts. The Red Dragonhawk stands out with its rich crimson plumage and is one of the very first collection mounts in WoW history. Alliance players instead receive the Blue Dragonhawk.

• Collector's value — the Red Dragonhawk was one of the first reward mounts for collecting. It symbolizes serious progress in gathering mounts and is a recognizable milestone for collectors.
• Beautiful model — an elegant dragonhawk with bright crimson plumage, larger than the standard blood elf racial mounts. It fits Horde characters perfectly, especially blood elves.
• Flying mount — it works both in the air and on the ground. Flight speed scales with your riding skill.
• Guaranteed acquisition — no RNG. As soon as you collect 100 mounts, the achievement completes automatically and the Red Dragonhawk arrives in the mail.
• Available to all characters — once obtained, the mount becomes available on every character on your account.

• A Horde character: the mount is only available to the Horde. Alliance characters receive the Blue Dragonhawk for the equivalent achievement.
• 100 mounts in the collection: the achievement counts mounts available to one specific character. All sources count — racial, reputation, drops, quest, achievement and purchasable mounts.
• Riding skill: a flying skill is required to use the mount.
• Gold: most of the cost goes toward buying racial mounts from vendors (around 800-1,000 gold for all of the Horde racial mounts).

Important: the achievement counts mounts available to your current character specifically. Mounts bound to another faction or race do not count. For example, a mount earned through Exalted reputation with Orgrimmar will not count for an Alliance character.

Below is the optimal path to 100 mounts. With focused farming you can gather the required number in 1-2 weeks, and with gold and leveled reputations in hand — in a single day.

Step 1: Horde racial mounts (up to 30 mounts)

The fastest and cheapest way to build the core of your collection. Each Horde race has a riding-animal vendor. To buy mounts of other races you need Exalted reputation with the corresponding faction.

Reputation tip: if you are not Exalted with the other races, equip the tabard of the desired faction and run a few dungeons — reputation climbs quickly. At max level, a single heroic dungeon run grants a substantial amount of reputation.

Step 2: Mounts for gold from vendors (15-20 mounts)

Some mounts are sold by NPCs for gold with no reputation requirements.

Be sure to check the flying mount vendors in Dalaran (Northrend) and Shattrath — they sell wind riders and gryphons for a relatively small amount of gold.

Step 3: Guaranteed drops from dungeons and raids (10-15 mounts)

Several mounts drop with a 100% chance from old dungeons and raids.

All of this is legacy content that can be soloed in a few minutes on a level 80 character.

Step 4: Quest and story mounts (5-10 mounts)

Some mounts are awarded for completing story chains.

• Dragon mount — granted free at the start of Dragonflight for the introductory quests on the Waking Shores
• Shadowlands covenant mounts — each covenant grants a starter mount upon joining
• The War Within campaign mounts — the expansion's story mounts

Step 5: Achievement mounts (5-10 mounts)

Several mounts are awarded for relatively simple achievements.

Step 6: PvP and other mounts (5-10 mounts)

• PvP mounts — several mounts can be bought with honor points from PvP vendors
• Recruit a Friend mounts — the subscription system and the Blizzard shop periodically add mounts
• Event mounts — Hallow's End, Winter Veil, the Lunar Festival and other in-game events grant mounts for participating

Even without farming rare drops or buying expensive gold mounts, the guaranteed mounts available are enough to complete the achievement.

• Start with racial mounts — this is the fastest way to build the core. If you are not Exalted with the other Horde races, equip a tabard and run 5-7 dungeons — that is enough for max reputation.
• Check every dungeon with a guaranteed drop — Obsidian Sanctum, Culling of Stratholme and Nok-Karosh hand out mounts instantly and for free.
• Don't forget the vendors in Shattrath and Dalaran — flying mounts from vendors cost between 50 and 200 gold each and have no additional requirements.
• All mounts available to the character count — including mounts earned on other characters on your account, provided they are available to the current character. Class mounts (such as paladin or warlock mounts) only count for that class.
• Alliance mounts don't count — if you have mounts bound to the Alliance (for example, human racial mounts), they will not count for a Horde character.
• Use the Simple Armory addon — it shows which mounts you already have and which are still available, with filtering by source.
• Pandaria reputation mounts — the Pandaria factions (Order of the Cloud Serpent, Shado-Pan) sell mounts for a small amount of gold at Exalted. Reputation climbs in a few days through daily quests.
• The mount arrives in the mail — once you earn the achievement, the Red Dragonhawk is delivered automatically by mail. Check the mailbox in the nearest city.

In the current The War Within expansion (2024-2026), collecting 100 mounts is easier than ever. In the 12 years since the achievement was added, the number of available mounts has grown from a few hundred to more than 900. Here is what is worth keeping in mind:

• Legacy content is cleared instantly — at level 80, every raid and dungeon from Classic to Battle for Azeroth is killed in seconds.
• Reputations climb faster — old tabards and bonuses significantly speed up reputation gain.
• New mount sources — every expansion adds dozens of new mounts from quests, dungeons, raids and the open world.
• The collection system is shared — mounts earned on any character are available to your whole account (except for faction and class restrictions).

Can you get the Red Dragonhawk on an Alliance character? No. Alliance characters receive the Blue Dragonhawk for the equivalent achievement. If you specifically want the red one, create or use a Horde character.

Do mounts from other characters count? Yes, if the mount is available to the current character. WoW's collection system is account-wide. However, faction mounts (Alliance racial mounts) and class mounts (the paladin mount) will not count for a character of another faction or class.

Where do you collect the mount after the achievement? The Red Dragonhawk arrives by mail. Walk up to any mailbox to receive the item, then use it to learn the mount.

Can you lose the achievement if your mount count drops below 100? No. The achievement is granted once and forever. Even if you lose access to some mounts, the Red Dragonhawk remains in your collection.
