Red Primal Raptor
Overview

Reins of the Red Primal Raptor is one of three equally obtainable raptor mounts from the Mists of Pandaria expansion. Players farm these raptors for their mount collection and achievements — the models are vivid, rarely seen in the game, and the acquisition chain itself is considered a classic of patch 5.5.0 "Throne of Thunder."
The acquisition mechanic is built on waiting: you obtain a
Primal Egg, it "ripens" in your bags for three real days and turns into a
Cracked Primal Egg, from which one of the three raptor mounts drops with a 100% chance. Which one exactly is decided by chance.
Why Get This Mount
These days players head to the Isle of Giants for:
Reins of the Red Primal Raptor — this very mount
Reins of the Black Primal Raptor — drops from the same egg
Reins of the Green Primal Raptor — drops from the same egg
Reins of the Bone-White Primal Raptor — a reward for Ku'ma's quest (turn in 9999 dinosaur bones)- Pandaria mount collection achievements
- Gold and dinosaur bones, which drop from the island's mobs in large quantities
Requirements and Prerequisites
- Minimum character level: 10. In practice the zone scales, and the content has long been soloable at any level.
- Riding skill: Apprentice.
- Access to Pandaria. If you have never been to Pandaria, first fly to Kun-Lai Summit or take a portal from your capital.
- No special access quests for the Isle of Giants are required — the island is open right away, you just need to fly there.
How to Reach the Isle of Giants
The Isle of Giants lies north of Kun-Lai, next to the Isle of Thunder. You can get there in two ways:
- On your flying mount. Fly out from the northern part of Kun-Lai Summit and hold a course due north. It's about a 1-1.5 minute flight to the island.
- Through the Throne of Thunder portal. In the faction capitals (Orgrimmar for the Horde, Stormwind for the Alliance) there is a portal to the Isle of Thunder, and from there the Isle of Giants is just a stone's throw away.

Reins of the Red Primal Raptor drop from a
Cracked Primal Egg. The egg itself appears automatically in your bags three real days after you obtain a
Primal Egg.
The Primal Egg is a rare drop from all of the dinosaurs on the Isle of Giants:
- Devilsaurs
- Primal/direhorn dinosaurs
- Skyscreamers
The approximate egg drop chance from a single mob is 3-5%. From the large direhorns the chance is a bit higher, but they are tougher and take longer to kill.
Important limitations:
- The
Primal Egg is a unique item. You can only hold one egg in your bags at a time. Until it "cracks" and you open it, a second one will not drop. - The
Cracked Primal Egg guarantees one of three raptors (red, black, or green). Which one exactly is random, and the chance for the color you want is 33%. - Duplicates are possible. If you specifically want the red raptor, on average you'll need to collect 3 eggs.
- Zandalari Warbringers do not drop the Primal Egg — they drop a different reward, and you cannot obtain the
Reins of the Red Primal Raptor from them.
Step-by-Step Acquisition Guide
- Fly to the Isle of Giants (coordinates above).
- Choose a zone with a dense cluster of dinosaurs. Convenient farming spots:
- The center of the island (
49 50) — a mixed herd of dinosaurs - The northeastern part — more devilsaurs
- The southern coast — clusters of direhorns and skyscreamers
- The center of the island (
- Kill dinosaurs one after another without picking types. The goal is to slay as many mobs as possible per session.
- As soon as a
Primal Egg appears in your bags, you can stop farming the mount for that week — a second egg will not drop anyway. - Wait three real days (72 hours of game time in your bags). The egg will automatically turn into a
Cracked Primal Egg. - Open the cracked egg with a right-click. You will receive one of the three raptors.
- If it's not the red one — repeat the cycle: return to the island and pick up another Primal Egg.
Farming Optimization
Which Class Is More Convenient to Farm On
The best classes for farming are those with fast AoE abilities and mass looting:
- Death Knight —
Defile and the vampiric aura let you wade into the thick of the mobs without worry - Demon Hunter — high mobility, powerful AoE, mass-pulling dozens of mobs
- Guardian Druid — survivability and quick corpse gathering via
Wild Charge - Paladin — high movement speed, immunity through
Divine Shield for fast repositioning
On any level 80 class, the island's dinosaurs are killed in a second or two.
Optimal Route
- Land in the center of the island.
- Make a clockwise loop: center → east → south → west → north.
- Each loop takes 8-12 minutes including looting.
- Dinosaur respawn on the island is fast — by the time you return to the starting point, the mobs are already back in place.
How Long One Run Takes
On average one Primal Egg drops in 30-90 minutes of active farming. The statistics depend heavily on luck — for some players the egg drops in 20 minutes, for others in 2-3 hours.
Farming on Alts
The
Primal Egg is not bound to a character and can be stored in shared bank space or mailed between alts. However, the "one egg in the bags" limit works per character, so it's useful to hold an egg on several alts at once — they will all "ripen" in parallel.
A rough calculation at a 33% chance for the color you want and about 1 egg per hour of farming: the average time to get specifically the red raptor is 3-5 hours of pure farming, not counting the 3-day wait between eggs.
Tips and Tricks
- The egg ripens by real time, and offline time counts too. Put the egg in your bags, log in three days later — you can open it.
- It's better not to open the cracked egg with the first character you log in on — if you get a duplicate, the mount is still account-bound and cannot be traded. But before opening, you should double-check whether you already have that raptor in your collection.
- The dinosaur bones, which drop by the hundreds, can be turned in for Ku'ma's quest for the
Reins of the Bone-White Primal Raptor. You get two mounts out of a single farming session. - Pay attention to the island's rare spawns — they don't give the Primal Egg, but they drop other mounts and items.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the mount be bought or traded?
No. The reins are obtained only from a Cracked Primal Egg and cannot be traded between players.
How long will it take to get the red color specifically?
At a 33% chance you'll need 3 eggs on average. Counting the ripening, that's anywhere from a week to three weeks of real time.
Can the egg's ripening be sped up?
No. Three days is a fixed timer and there is no way around it.
Is the mount bound to a race or faction?
No. The
Reins of the Red Primal Raptor are available to both the Horde and the Alliance, and can be used by any class and race.
