Red Riding Nether Ray
Overview

Red Riding Nether Ray is an epic flying mount added in The Burning Crusade expansion (patch 2.1.0). It's a large nether ray with a bright red coloration and semi-transparent wings, gliding effortlessly through the air. An interesting detail: unlike the other color variants, the red ray's eyes do not glow.
The mount is sold by the quartermaster Grella at Blackwind Landing in Terokkar Forest (Outland). To purchase it you need Exalted reputation with the Sha'tari Skyguard faction.
Why You Want This Mount
- Flying transport — the mount works both on the ground and in the air. Flight speed depends on your riding skill: from +150% to +310%
- Unique model — nether rays have an unusual design that stands out from most mounts in the game. The red coloration is one of five available variants
- Collection of five rays — alongside the red one, you can purchase the
Green Riding Nether Ray,
Purple Riding Nether Ray,
Silver Riding Nether Ray and
Blue Riding Nether Ray. - Achievement — upon reaching Exalted you'll earn Skywall over Skettis, which counts toward reputation meta-achievements.
- Pet included — the same Grella sells the
Nether Ray Fry with a matching red coloration.
How to Reach the Vendor
Grella is located at Blackwind Landing — a Skyguard camp in the southeast of Terokkar Forest, at the foot of the ruins of Skettis.
- Head to Shattrath City — you can get there via a portal from your faction's capital (the portal section in Stormwind or Orgrimmar)
- From Shattrath, fly southeast to Skettis. A flying mount is required to access Blackwind Landing — it sits on elevated terrain
- Grella's coordinates:
Grinding Sha'tari Skyguard Reputation
From neutral reputation to Exalted you need to earn 42,000 points. At max level (80) the whole process takes 4 to 8 hours depending on the chosen method.
Where to Begin
Head to Shattrath City and find Yuula — a draenei recruiter near the Terrace of Light. She gives the first quest in the chain leading to Skettis. Complete the entire introductory series of quests — it grants about 3,000 reputation and unlocks the daily quests.
Daily Quests in Skettis
| Quest | Reputation | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Fires Over Skettis | +350 | Use Skyguard bombs to destroy kaliri eggs on the arakkoa platforms |
| Escape from Skettis | +150 | Free a captive guard and escort them to safety |
Both quests are given by Sky Sergeant Doryn at Blackwind Landing.
Daily Quests in Blade's Edge Mountains
To unlock these quests you must first complete the Ogri'la quest chain in the Blade's Edge Mountains. The chain starts with Chu'a'lor in Shattrath.
| Quest | Reputation | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Wrangle More Aether Rays! | +500 | Drop bombs on ammunition dumps while riding a wyvern |
| Bomb Them Again! | +350 | Lasso five aether rays with a special rope |
In total, daily quests grant up to 1,350 reputation per day. On daily quests alone, the road to Exalted would take about 30 days.
Repeatable Quests and Mob Farming — the Fast Track
The most efficient way to speed up the grind is to farm mobs in Skettis alongside the daily quests.
Step 1: Time-Lost Scrolls
Kill arakkoa in Skettis — they drop
Shadow Dust. Each mob also grants 10 reputation points. Collect 6 units of dust and turn in the quest More Shadow Dust to the NPC Severin at Blackwind Landing. The reward is 150 reputation and a
Shadowy Potion.
Step 2: Time-Lost Scrolls
Drink the
Shadowy Potion — for 20 minutes you'll be able to see the invisible time-lost arakkoa. Kill them and collect Time-Lost Scrolls. You need 40 scrolls.
Step 3: Summoning the Mini-Bosses
Use 10 scrolls at each of the four skull piles in Skettis to summon the mini-bosses:
Each mini-boss grants 100 reputation. Collect four trophies from them and take them to Hazzik — he gives you the
Time-Lost Offering.
Step 4: Summoning Terokk
Use the
Time-Lost Offering on the skull pile in the center of Skettis lake to summon Terokk. Turn in the quest Terokk's Downfall — that's +500 reputation for killing the boss.
At max level all the mobs and bosses of Skettis are killed instantly. The full cycle (dust → potion → scrolls → mini-bosses → Terokk) repeats endlessly and grants about 2,000 reputation per hour.
Reputation from Mobs
| Enemy | Reputation |
|---|---|
| Skettis Kaliri | +5 |
| Arakkoa and Monstrous Kaliri | +10 |
| Talonsworn Forest-Rager | +30 |
| Mini-bosses (4 total) | +100 each |
| Terokk | +500 (via quest) |
Optimizing the Farm
- At level 80 it's all trivial — any class wipes out Skettis mobs with a single touch. Pick a character with fast movement between platforms (druid, demon hunter, mage).
- Don't forget Blade's Edge Mountains — the two daily quests grant 850 extra reputation and take 5-10 minutes. Skipping them isn't worth it.
- Shadow Dust on the auction house — if you don't want to farm mobs, you can buy dust from other players and turn in the More Shadow Dust quest in batches. To level up through dust alone you'll need about 1,680 units.
- Reputation bonuses — the Darkmoon Faire and Traveler's Week events grant +10% to reputation earned. If you time it right, the farm speeds up noticeably.
- Terokk's respawn time — after being killed, Terokk reappears in 10-15 minutes. While you wait, farm dust and scrolls for the next cycle.
All Sha'tari Skyguard Mounts
Upon reaching Exalted, you gain access to all five nether rays from Grella at once. Each costs 200 gold (160 with the discount).
All five rays will cost you 1,000 gold (800 with the Exalted discount). It's smarter to buy the entire collection at once — you only have to grind the reputation once anyway.
Tips
Start with the introductory chain — don't try to farm mobs before unlocking the daily quests. The introductory series from Yuula grants about 3,000 reputation and unlocks all of Skettis's content.
Combine daily quests with grinding — complete both quests in Skettis, then switch to farming Shadow Dust and scrolls. Kill every mob along the way at the same time — each one grants reputation.
Check the auction house —
Shadow Dust isn't soulbound on pickup. Sometimes large batches are sold cheaply at auction, letting you skip mob farming entirely.
A flying mount is mandatory — Skettis and Blackwind Landing sit on elevated terrain inaccessible without flight. Make sure you have at least basic flying skill before starting the grind.
The mount is account-wide — after purchase, the
Red Riding Nether Ray will appear in the collection of all your characters.
