Reins of the Azure Drake

ability_mount_drake_azureReins of the Azure Drake is a rare epic flying mount from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. This majestic azure-colored dragon belongs to Malygos's blue dragonflight. The mount drops from the Alexstrasza's Gift container that appears after defeating Malygos in the Eye of Eternity raid. The drop chance is approximately 1–2%.

In the mount journal, it is accompanied by the flavor text: "Always speak politely to an enraged dragon."

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rarity — the 1–2% drop chance makes the Azure Drake one of the most coveted mounts from the Wrath of the Lich King era
  • Appearance — an elegant blue dragonflight model with a distinctive azure coloring. It belongs to the same series as the ability_mount_drake_blueReins of the Blue Drake, but features a more saturated and deeper hue
  • Collection value — a mount from legacy content that players have been farming since 2008. Having the Azure Drake in your collection demonstrates persistence and luck
  • Farming accessibility — the raid contains a single boss, the fight takes less than a minute at max level, and a key is no longer required for entry

How to Obtain

There are two ways to get this mount:

  1. Farming the Eye of Eternity — the primary method. Kill Malygos weekly on every available character. In the current version of the game, the mount drops on both difficulties — 10-player and 25-player
  2. Black Market — the mount periodically appears on the Black Market Auction House listed by Mei Francis with a starting bid of 20,000 gold. The final price usually reaches several million

Originally, the mount only dropped in the 25-player version, but this restriction was removed in 2010. It is now available on both difficulties.

How to Reach the Eye of Eternity

The Eye of Eternity is located in the Nexus — an icy dragon fortress in the center of Coldarra island, in the northwestern part of Borean Tundra (Northrend).

Route for Both Factions

  1. Open a portal to Dalaran (Northrend) from your faction's capital city — the portal is located in the portal room of Stormwind or Orgrimmar
  2. In Dalaran, use the flight master and fly to Transitus Shield in Coldarra
  3. Find the Nexus — a massive icy tower in the center of the island
  4. Go up to the topmost portal — this is the entrance to the Eye of Eternity. The lower portals lead to the Nexus and Oculus dungeons

Entrance Coordinates

The entrance is at the very top of the Nexus tower. A flying mount is required to reach it. A raid key is no longer needed — this restriction was removed with the Cataclysm expansion.

Fighting Malygos at Level 80

At max level, the fight with Malygos is trivial, but it has several mechanical aspects worth knowing:

Phase 1

Attack Malygos on the platform. At level 80, you will deal massive damage in a matter of seconds.

Phase 2

Malygos takes off and becomes immune. Flying adds appear that must be killed. Melee characters can use hovering discs to reach them. At max level, the adds die instantly.

Phase 3

Malygos destroys the platform, and you find yourself mounted on a red drake. Use ability number 1 (fire attack) to finish off the boss. If you dealt enough damage in the previous phases, this phase will end in a few seconds.

After the victory, Alexstrasza's Gift container appears where the boss died — open it and check the loot.

Farming Optimization

Two Attempts per Week per Character

In the current version of the game, Wrath of the Lich King-era raids on normal difficulty have separate lockouts for 10-player and 25-player versions. This means you can kill Malygos twice per week on a single character: once on 10-player difficulty and once on 25-player difficulty. Difficulty switching is done via the character portrait before entering the raid.

Using Alts

The mount is bind-on-pickup, so any of your characters can receive it. The more level 80 characters you have, the more weekly attempts you get. Each alt provides 2 additional chances per week.

Additional Mount

Malygos also drops ability_mount_drake_blueReins of the Blue Drake with a similar drop chance. Both mounts can drop simultaneously from the same container, though the probability of this is extremely low.

Time Calculation

With an approximate 1.5% drop chance and 2 attempts per week per character:

Attempts Probability of Obtaining
20 (10 weeks, 1 character) ~26%
50 (25 weeks, 1 character) ~53%
100 (50 weeks, 1 character) ~78%
100 (10 weeks, 5 characters) ~78%

Multiple characters significantly speed up the process. With five alts, the probability of getting the mount in 10 weeks is comparable to a year of farming on a single character.

Tips

  • Switch difficulty before entering — make sure you have selected the correct raid version (10 or 25-player) via the character portrait menu. Complete both versions per week for the maximum number of attempts
  • Don't confuse the portals — the Eye of Eternity entrance is at the very top of the Nexus. The two lower portals lead to dungeons, not the raid
  • Watch the Black Market Auction House — if you have enough gold, purchasing may be faster than months of farming. Check listings regularly
  • Don't forget about the Blue Drakeability_mount_drake_blueReins of the Blue Drake can also drop from Malygos, so you are farming two rare mounts at once
  • Farm in parallel — while you are in Northrend, visit other raids for rare mount farming: ability_mount_pegasusInvincible's Reins from Icecrown Citadel or inv_misc_enggizmos_03Mimiron's Head from Ulduar
  • The fight takes 1–3 minutes — most of the time is spent flying from Dalaran to the Nexus and waiting through boss phases. The actual damage at level 80 is negligible
