Get Reins of the Green Proto-Drake mount

The Green Proto-Drake is a rare flying mount added in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. The Green Proto-Drake belongs to the proto-drake family — ancient winged creatures that inhabited Northrend long before modern dragons appeared. The mount's model stands out with its massive build, the spikes running along its spine, and the distinctive green coloring of its scales.

The main way to obtain it is the Cracked Egg, which hatches from the Mysterious Egg sold by a vendor of the Oracles faction in Sholazar Basin. The mount can also appear on the Black Market under Mei Francis.

To get the Green Proto-Drake, you need to complete the following steps:

1. Travel to Sholazar Basin in Northrend. The zone is accessible through the Chromie system (the Wrath of the Lich King timeline) or directly
2. Begin the quest chain involving the Oracles and the Frenzyheart Tribe
3. Complete the quest A Hero's Burden, in which you must fight Artruis the Heartless. At 30% health the boss becomes invulnerable and frees an oracle and a wolvar — kill the wolvar to side with the Oracles
4. Raise your reputation with the Oracles to Revered through daily quests
5. Buy the Mysterious Egg from the vendor Geen for 3 gold
6. Wait 3 real days until the egg turns into a Cracked Egg
7. Open the Cracked Egg — if you are lucky, the Reins of the Green Proto-Drake will be inside
8. Repeat the process until the mount drops

Each Cracked Egg contains one random item from the following list:

All results except the mount and the yolk are collectible pets. The result of each egg is determined independently of previous ones — several eggs in a row can give the same item.

To buy the Mysterious Egg, you must reach Revered with the Oracles faction. In total, going from Hated (the starting level after choosing a side) to Revered requires roughly 42,000 reputation points.

Getting Started: Choosing a Faction

Two rival factions operate in Sholazar Basin — the Oracles and the Frenzyheart Tribe. You choose a side during the quest A Hero's Burden:

1. Find the Injured Rainspeaker Oracle in Sholazar Basin and take his quest chain
2. In the final battle with Artruis the Heartless, at 30% of his health two captives appear — an oracle and a wolvar
3. Kill the wolvar (a member of the Frenzyheart Tribe) to side with the Oracles
4. After the victory you will gain Friendly status with the Oracles and Hated with the Frenzyheart Tribe

Daily Quests

Each day 3 quests out of 8 possible ones are available. Each quest grants about 500 reputation points (roughly 1,500–1,700 points per day in total). The quests are given by Oracle Soothsayer Raam at the Oracle camp.

List of possible daily quests:

• A Cleansing Song — catch a specific fish in the local waters
• Offering to the God of Courier — gather offerings and bring them to the altar
• Crystal Gathering — collect rare crystals across the zone
• Defending the Nests — fend off predator attacks on the nesting grounds
• And other scouting and gathering quests

How Long It Takes

With daily completion of all available quests, the path from Friendly to Revered takes roughly 2–3 weeks. At level 90, Northrend content is cleared instantly, so the daily visit takes no more than 10–15 minutes.

Switching Factions

If you previously chose the Frenzyheart Tribe, you can switch to the Oracles by completing the quest "A Hero's Burden" again. The quest becomes available once more, and this time you need to kill the wolvar instead of the oracle.

Black Market

The Reins of the Green Proto-Drake periodically appear on the Black Market under the vendor Mei Francis. The starting price is 20,000 gold. The final cost depends on player activity on your server and can reach several hundred thousand gold.

This method suits those who do not want to rely on luck with eggs and are willing to pay gold.

Satchel of Exotic Mysteries

The Satchel of Exotic Mysteries is a reward for completing a random dungeon in a role affected by the "Call to Arms" bonus. The satchel has an extremely small chance of containing rare mounts, including the Reins of the Green Proto-Drake. This method does not require reputation with the Oracles, but the chance of getting the mount is even lower than from an egg.

Daily Action Plan

1. Log in and head to Sholazar Basin
2. Check whether the Mysterious Egg has turned into a Cracked Egg — if so, open it
3. If the mount did not drop, buy a new egg
4. Complete the 3 available Oracle daily quests (while you are building reputation)

The Math of Luck

With a drop chance of about 2–6% and an egg maturation time of 3 days:

• At a 5% chance you will need about 20 eggs on average, that is roughly 60 days (2 months)
• At a 2% chance — about 50 eggs on average, that is roughly 150 days (5 months)
• Each attempt is independent, so the mount may drop from the very first egg or from the hundredth
