Overview

Stormsong Coastwatcher

Game iconStormsong Coastwatcher is a flying gryphon mount added to World of Warcraft in patch 8.2 "Rise of Azshara" of the Battle for Azeroth expansion. The model depicts a slender gray gryphon with white plumage on its chest, fitted in the light leather harness of the Kul Tiran patrol forces. According to the lore, the coastwatchers of Stormsong Valley keep a constant watch over the sea, scanning for approaching threats, and patrol the coastline daily.

The mount is sold by the quartermaster of the Storm's Wake faction — Sister Lilyana in the town of Brennadam, Stormsong Valley (coordinates 59, 69). Purchasing it requires Exalted standing with this faction and 90,000 gold. The mount is available to the Alliance only and is bound to the account upon acquisition.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Versatile flying transport — the gryphon flies at +150%, +280%, or +310% speed (depending on your riding skill) and also works as a ground mount at +60% or +100% speed
  • Reputation status reward — the mount signals to other players that you have leveled Storm's Wake to Exalted and completed a significant portion of the Kul Tiras storyline
  • Elegant gryphon model — a rare gray-and-white coloration without armor, distinct from the standard Stormwind war gryphons. It looks great in sea and coastal zones
  • Progress toward collection achievements — every new mount counts toward meta-achievements
  • Complements the faction's second mount — Sister Lilyana also sells the Game iconReins of the Dapple Gray for 90,000 gold, so a single reputation grind can immediately tick off two collection entries

How to Obtain

The main route to the mount is to grind Storm's Wake reputation to Exalted and buy the reins from the quartermaster in Brennadam.

  1. An Alliance character of any class and race, level 10 or higher (in practice the grind happens at max level)
  2. Unlock Kul Tiras. To do this you must complete the Battle for Azeroth intro storyline with Jaina Proudmoore in Stormwind — the quest Daughter of the Sea and onward
  3. Complete the story quests in Stormsong Valley until you reach Friendly standing with Storm's Wake
  4. Finish the Alliance war campaign up to the quest The Restless Cabal to unlock Kul Tiras world quests
  5. Daily, complete world quests in Stormsong Valley and turn in the "Storm's Wake" emissary quest (any 4 world quests for +1,500 reputation)
  6. Bring your reputation up to Exalted (21,000 points from Friendly)
  7. Fly to Brennadam (Stormsong Valley, coordinates 59, 69) and buy from Sister Lilyana the item Game iconReins of the Stormsong Coastwatcher for 90,000 gold

Storm's Wake — the Faction

Storm's Wake is one of the three native factions of Kul Tiras, uniting the clerics and sea keepers of Stormsong Valley. Their mission is to protect the coast and fight the corruption of the Black Empire spreading through the region.

Rank Points Cumulative
Neutral 0 0
Friendly 3,000 3,000
Honored 3,000 6,000
Revered 6,000 12,000
Exalted 12,000 24,000
Paragon 21,000 45,000

In total, from the starting Neutral standing to Exalted you need to gather 45,000 reputation points. Part of this is granted automatically while completing the Stormsong Valley storyline.

How to Grind Reputation

The main sources of Storm's Wake reputation are listed below, from the most efficient to the supplementary.

Stormsong Valley Story Campaign

Completing the entire zone quest chain grants roughly 11,000–13,000 reputation points and brings you to Honored in one sitting. This is a mandatory step: without the zone story you won't get world quests, and part of the Alliance war campaign also requires progress in Stormsong.

World Quests and the Emissary

After completing The Restless Cabal, daily world quests appear in Stormsong Valley. Each basic quest grants 75 reputation points, an elite one — 150 points. Every few days the Storm's Wake emissary arrives: complete any 4 world quests in Stormsong Valley and receive an additional 1,500 reputation points in a single bundle.

Paragon Reputation and the Reins

After Exalted, reputation keeps accumulating, and every 10,000 points you receive Storm's Wake Supplies — a paragon cache from Sister Lilyana. It's important to understand: the Game iconReins of the Stormsong Coastwatcher do NOT drop from the paragon cache. The only way to get them is to buy them from Sister Lilyana for 90,000 gold.

Therefore paragon is worth farming for the pet and the crafting recipes, but not for the mount.

Optimizing the Reputation Grind

Recommended Order of Actions

  1. Complete the entire Stormsong Valley storyline (11,000–13,000 points, Honored standing)
  2. Close out the Alliance war campaign up to unlocking world quests
  3. Set up a rotation: Storm's Wake emissary + scribe's contract + scrolls bought with doubloons
  4. Over 2–3 weeks of active play with 4 world quests per day, you'll gather the remaining 32,000–34,000 points to Exalted

Multiple Alts — Is It Worth It

Storm's Wake reputation is not account-wide in BfA, but starting from 10.0 the "reputation catch-up" bonus applies: the first character grinds normally, subsequent ones receive +100% to all BfA reputation. If you already have an Alliance alt with a finished Stormsong Valley storyline, reputation on it will grind twice as fast.

Preparing for the Purchase — Where to Get 90,000 Gold

The sum may seem large, but with regular play gold adds up over a couple of weeks:

  • Weekly quests — Season 2 world quests grant 2,000–5,000 gold each
  • Professions — alchemy, leatherworking, and blacksmithing steadily sell consumables
  • Old raids for gold — gold from bosses and transmog items from all outdated raids
  • Island Expeditions — repeated runs grant a chance at mounts and pets you can sell on the auction house

Tips

1

Grab both mounts at once — the ability_mount_ridinghorseReins of the Dapple Gray cost the same 90,000 gold and require no extra effort, so set aside 180,000 gold for both purchases at once

2

Use the scribe's contract during the New Moon — overlapping bonuses give a noticeable boost in the final third of the grind

3

Don't forget the achievement — reaching Exalted awards the Storm's Wake achievement, which counts toward the meta-achievement Azerothian Diplomat and unlocks part of Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One

4

If you play Horde — this mount is simply unavailable to you.

5

The mount flies — unlike many early BfA mounts, the gryphon flies without issue in all flight-enabled zones.

6

Account-bound — once activated, the mount appears in the collection of all your Alliance characters with no class or race restrictions
