Riding Harness
Overview

Riding Harness is a ground mount added in the Warlords of Draenor expansion (patch 6.0.1). Using the item teaches the
Dustmane Direwolf mount — a large, sand-colored wolf fitted with a leather harness. It is the first mount in the history of World of Warcraft to be created through the Leatherworking profession. The harness is crafted by a leatherworker with Draenor Leatherworking skill 100, and the recipe is purchased from a profession vendor in your garrison or Ashran for
Secret of Draenor Leatherworking.
The Dustmane Direwolf is a cautious beast by direwolf standards, one that can only be coaxed into serving as a mount with the help of a special harness. The mount model is rendered in sandy-brown tones and stands apart from other Draenor direwolves thanks to its lighter coat.
Why you want this mount
- Guaranteed acquisition — the mount is created through a profession, with no element of chance. As soon as you gather the materials and learn the recipe, the mount is yours
- Unique model — the Dustmane Direwolf has a distinctive sandy coat not found on any other wolf in the game. Among collectors it is prized precisely for its unusual hide color
- Available to all characters — once learned, the mount appears in the mount collection on every character on the account that has Leatherworking trained
- Counts toward achievements — the mount is credited toward mount-collection achievements, bringing you closer to rewards for the number of mounts collected
- Relatively simple craft — compared with mounts from current expansions, the materials for the Riding Harness are gathered quickly and require no significant gold investment
Important: the Dustmane Direwolf is a profession mount. Even though it appears in the collection on every character on the account, it can only be summoned by those who have Leatherworking trained. Keep this in mind before you start crafting.
How to obtain
- Make sure your character has Leatherworking trained. If the profession is not learned, visit any Leatherworking trainer in your faction's capital
- Learn Draenor Leatherworking. To do so, purchase
Draenor Leatherworking from a trainer in Ashran or your garrison, or obtain it from your first skinning on Draenor - Raise your Draenor Leatherworking skill to 100. Craft entry-level items from
Raw Beast Hide — the primary Draenor material, gathered by skinning animals on the continent - Accumulate 5 Secret of Draenor Leatherworking. Each secret is created once per day via the daily Draenor Leatherworking spell
- Buy
Pattern: Riding Harness from a leatherworking vendor in your garrison or Ashran for 5 Secret of Draenor Leatherworking - Gather 100
Burnished Leather and 20
Sorcerous Air - Craft the Riding Harness through the profession window
- Use the item — the Dustmane Direwolf mount will appear in your collection
Where to buy the recipe
The recipe is purchased from leatherworking vendors in your garrison or in the Ashran capital. The cost is 5 Secret of Draenor Leatherworking.
Alliance vendors
| NPC | Location |
|---|---|
| Anders Longstitch | Lunarfall (Alliance garrison), tannery |
| Lirah Moonsilk | Stormshield (Ashran) |
Horde vendors
| NPC | Location |
|---|---|
| Murna Greenhoof | Frostwall (Horde garrison), tannery |
| Garm Lightstride | Warspear (Ashran) |
To buy the recipe from the vendor in your garrison, you will need a tannery — a small profession building. Build the tannery through the architect's table in your garrison if it has not been raised yet.
How to get the materials
Burnished Leather (100)
Burnished Leather is the primary crafting material of Draenor Leatherworking. There are several ways to obtain it:
- Daily craft — the "Burnished Leather" spell creates a batch of the material from 20 Raw Beast Hide and 10
Gorgrond Flytrap. The spell is available once per day - Work orders at the tannery — assign work orders at your garrison tannery. Each order turns 5 Raw Beast Hide into 1 Burnished Leather over 4 hours. If a level-100 follower is assigned to the tannery, the output doubles to 2 units
- Spirit of leatherworking — starting with patch 6.2, a spell with no daily limit is available, letting you create Burnished Leather in any quantity as long as you have the materials
Sorcerous Air (20)
Sorcerous Air is an elemental reagent, a byproduct of several professions:
- Crafting byproduct — randomly produced when crafting items via Enchanting, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, and Tailoring
- Purchase with Primal Spirit — sold by garrison vendors for 15
Primal Spirit per unit. Primal Spirits are obtained from profession dailies, work orders, and mobs on Draenor - Transmutation — alchemists can transmute other elements (Sorcerous Earth, Sorcerous Fire, Sorcerous Water) into Sorcerous Air
- Auction house — if you have the gold, the easiest option is to buy it at the auction house. On most realms Sorcerous Air is cheap, since Draenor content is long outdated
Secret of Draenor Leatherworking (5)
Secret of Draenor Leatherworking is the currency for buying Draenor Leatherworking recipes. It is created via a daily spell (one per day). Accumulating 5 will therefore take a minimum of 5 days.
How to reach your garrison and Ashran
Garrison
The garrison is your personal fortress on Draenor. Access to the garrison opens when you start the Warlords of Draenor introductory quest chain.
- Head to your faction's capital (Orgrimmar for the Horde, Stormwind for the Alliance)
- Find the notice board or Chromie and start the Warlords of Draenor quest chain
- Complete the introductory scenario at the Dark Portal — once finished, you are transported to your garrison
- Build the tannery through the architect's table if it has not been raised yet
Ashran
Ashran is the central PvP-content zone of Draenor with neutral vendors. You can reach it through the portal in your garrison (which appears after building a level-2 barracks) or directly through the portals in the capitals.
Optimizing the acquisition
The fast track
At max level (90 in Midnight) all Draenor content is cleared instantly. The optimal plan of action:
- Day 1: learn Draenor Leatherworking, build the tannery in your garrison, and start creating Secret of Draenor Leatherworking and Burnished Leather. Queue work orders at the tannery
- Days 2–5: each day create one Secret and one batch of Burnished Leather. Refresh the tannery work orders
- Day 5: buy the recipe for 5 Secrets. By this point you will have enough Burnished Leather from daily crafting and work orders
- Sorcerous Air — get it from the auction house or by purchasing with Primal Spirit, which is faster than waiting for a byproduct from other professions
- Craft the Riding Harness and learn the mount
How long it will take
The minimum time is 5 days, driven by the daily limit on creating Secret of Draenor Leatherworking. If you already have Draenor Leatherworking leveled and Secrets stockpiled, the mount can be obtained in a single day.
Speeding up via the auction house
If you do not want to wait to accumulate Burnished Leather through daily spells, check the auction house. Burnished Leather and Sorcerous Air are often sold cheaply, since Warlords of Draenor is an outdated expansion. An investment of a few hundred gold lets you skip the material-farming stage.
Tips
Level the skill in advance — if you are starting from scratch, craft cheap items from Raw Beast Hide to build your skill up to 100. Each craft grants several skill points
Assign a follower to the tannery — a level-100 follower assigned to the tannery doubles the Burnished Leather output from work orders. This significantly speeds up material accumulation
Don't forget the daily spells — creating Secrets and Burnished Leather is available once per day. If you skip a day, the time to obtain the mount increases
Farm Raw Beast Hide in Nagrand — southeastern Nagrand (coordinates 78, 72) is one of the best skinning spots. Tamed clefthoof respawn quickly and provide a steady flow of hides
The mount is tied to the profession — if you switch Leatherworking for another profession, the mount becomes unsummonable until you take Leatherworking back. Keep this in mind when planning professions
Combine with other recipes — while you save up Secrets for the harness recipe, you will inevitably accumulate Burnished Leather from daily crafting. Use the surplus to craft items for sale at the auction house
Check the auction house before crafting — sometimes Sorcerous Air at the auction house is cheaper than trading for Primal Spirit. Compare prices before buying
