Overview

Shard of Azzinoth

Game iconShard of Azzinoth is an epic one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion. The blade looks like a jagged shard of Fel crystal: the edge is shot through with dark green light, and demonic heat smolders at its base. This is the same energy that empowered Azzinoth — the warden whose glaives Illidan wields. The dagger even retains an echo of that power: on a hit it has a chance to summon an Azzinoth ember that briefly protects its wielder in combat.

By type it is a dagger, which can be wielded by rogues, hunters, warlocks, warriors, druids, mages, priests, shamans and evokers — that is, all classes able to use daggers. Death knights, paladins, monks and demon hunters do not use daggers, so the appearance is only useful to them in the collection for other characters on the account. For transmogrification it is the model that matters: the deep green silhouette makes the dagger a striking accent for any look built around the theme of the Fel and the Burning Legion.

The item has a single source — the Black Temple, the final raid of the The Burning Crusade era. Today this is content that has long been below level, and you go there purely for the looks: for the dagger itself, for Illidan's legendary glaives and for the Tier 6 armor sets.

Source

Game iconShard of Azzinoth drops from the raid's final boss — that is Illidan Stormrage. The raid itself, the Black Temple, is located in the Shadowmoon Valley zone in Outland.

  • Boss: Illidan Stormrage, the ninth and final boss of the raid.
  • The dagger's drop chance is about 18%, meaning roughly one run out of five or six yields the trophy.
  • The dagger is not bound to a class or specialization: it can be obtained by any character who reaches Illidan.
  • There is no attempt limit. Illidan can be killed once a week on each character — your personal weekly raid progress lock resets every in-game Wednesday.

Previously, entering the raid required a long attunement chain and the Medallion of Karabor. Now the attunement chain has been removed entirely — the dagger is of interest only to transmog collectors, and Blizzard has lifted all artificial barriers.

How to get into the raid

  • Make your way to Shattrath — through the portal from any capital of your faction to Outland.
  • From Shattrath open the route to the flight point in Shadowmoon Valley and fly to the southeastern part of the zone.
  • The raid entrance is a portal in a breach in the southern wall beneath the ruins of Karabor, at coordinates roughly /way 71 46. It is tied to the quest Entry Into the Black Temple, but completing it is not required — the portal is available right away.
  • Inside, set the raid difficulty to "normal", then fight your way from the first boss to Illidan.

The Black Temple is easily cleared solo by a character of current level. There are no serious obstacles to solo farming — the main difficulty is purely time-based: the raid is long, with mandatory story cutscenes between bosses and long runs between wings. Allow 15–25 minutes for a full run.

Alternatives

The Shard of Azzinoth has no color variations — it is a unique model of The Burning Crusade era, and no recolors with the same silhouette exist in the game. If you want a different blade with a similar mood, take a look at weapons from the same raid.

Game iconThe Maelstrom's Fury High Warlord Naj'entus, Black Temple

Game iconThe Maelstrom's Fury is another epic dagger from the Black Temple, dropping from the raid's first boss. Its silhouette is different, but it is obtained in the same run, so while farming the Shard of Azzinoth it makes sense to pick it up as well.

Who it suits visually

  • Looks themed around the Fel and the Burning Legion: the blade's green glow echoes demonic sets and greenish weapon effects.
  • Tier 6 armor sets from the Black Temple — the dagger is built in a single color palette with this tier and completes the "Illidari" look.
  • A demon hunter look: the Shard of Azzinoth is literally made from the same energy as Illidan's glaives and looks great paired with dark green leather armor.
  • Dark leather and cloth sets with an accent color — the rich green works as a bright contrasting spot on a black or purple base.
  • It works less well next to light "holy" armor in gold and white tones: the demonic hue stands out from such a palette.

Tips

1

Illidan is the final boss of the raid, so you will have to clear the entire Black Temple for the dagger anyway. Plan for the full run.

2

With a drop chance of about 18%, be prepared to come back several weeks in a row: there is no guarantee from the first kill.

3

It is worth running on several characters at once — the weekly progress lock is counted separately for each, and each gives its own chance at the trophy.

4

For fast farming, classes with high mobility are convenient — a rogue or druid cut down the time spent on long runs between the raid's wings.

5

Illidan also drops the legendary glaives — their appearance is available only to demon hunters and requires separate conditions, but the dagger is worth the same kill as the glaives.

6

Do not skip the story scenes of the Illidan fight too quickly: the trophy appears in the loot only after the encounter is fully completed.

7

If the raid stalls on a cutscene, just wait for it to finish — it is part of the fight, not a bug.
