Spectral Wind Rider

Spectral Wind Rider is an epic flying mount added in patch 4.3.0 of the Cataclysm expansion. It is a spectral wyvern with a semi-transparent turquoise-green glow — the first ghostly flying mount made available to the Horde.

The mount was originally granted as part of the Scroll of Resurrection promotion, which ran from March 2012 to February 2014. After the program closed, the mount remained unavailable for nearly a decade until it appeared in the Trading Post in November 2023.

The mount is available only to Horde characters. The Alliance counterpart is the Spectral Gryphon.

• Unique spectral model. The semi-transparent wyvern with its ghostly glow stands out from ordinary wind riders. The model keeps the classic wyvern silhouette but looks striking thanks to the spectral effect.
• Historical value. The mount was long considered unobtainable and was associated with a long-finished Blizzard promotion. Many collectors waited years for its return.
• Small model size. The compact wyvern model does not obstruct your view and is convenient for navigating tight spaces.
• PvP advantage. The spectral model is semi-transparent — under certain visual effects the mount becomes almost invisible, making it harder to spot.
• Counts toward achievements. The mount is included in the overall mount count for the "Mountain o' Mounts" achievement series.

• Minimum level: 10
• Riding skill: Apprentice Riding (ground), Expert Riding (flying)
• Faction: Horde only
• Mount type: flying and ground
• Binding: account-bound on purchase

Once obtained, the mount appears in your collection and becomes available to all Horde characters on the account. Its speed automatically adjusts to your riding skill.

Method 1 — Trading Post (primary)

The Trading Post is the only current way to obtain the Spectral Wind Rider.

1. Wait for the mount to appear in the rotation. The goods in the Trading Post change every month. Keep an eye on the announcements on the official Blizzard website.
2. Save up 650 Trader's Tender. The currency is earned by completing the monthly Trading Post tasks (up to 1000 Tender per month) and by holding an active subscription (500 Tender as a bonus at the start of each month).
3. Visit the Trading Post. For the Horde, the post is located next to the auction house in Orgrimmar. In Dornogal (the capital of The War Within) you can also access the post's goods at the vendor Mizzix.
4. Buy the mount. Find the Spectral Wind Rider in the catalog and purchase it with Trader's Tender.
5. Activate the mount from your inventory — it will appear in your collection.

Tip: During Trading Post anniversary events (for example, in February 2025) certain goods are sold at a discount. The Spectral Wind Rider then cost 500 Tender instead of 650 at the vendor Mizzix in Dornogal.

Method 2 — Scroll of Resurrection (historical, unavailable)

From March 6, 2012 to February 18, 2014, Blizzard ran the Scroll of Resurrection promotion. If you sent an invitation to an inactive player and they paid for at least 30 days of subscription, you received a Spectral Mount Box by mail. From the box you could obtain the Spectral Wind Rider (Horde) or the Spectral Gryphon (Alliance).

The program was fully closed in patch 5.4.7 and is no longer active.

How to Save Trader's Tender Faster

Since the mount is purchased with Trader's Tender, the main goal is to accumulate it efficiently:

• Complete the monthly tasks. Each month the Trading Post offers a list of activities (dungeons, PvP, professions, gathering). Completing tasks on the progress bar grants up to 1000 Tender.
• Keep an active subscription. At the start of each month you receive 500 bonus Tender if you have an active subscription.
• Don't waste your currency. If you know you specifically want this mount, refrain from buying cosmetic items in the previous months. Tender carries over between months.
• Plan ahead. The maximum amount of Tender per month is 1500 (500 bonus + 1000 from tasks). To buy the mount for 650 Tender, one month of active play is enough.

Tracking the Rotation

• Follow the news. Blizzard announces the Trading Post contents at the start of each month.
• List of previous appearances: November 2023 (650 Tender), February 2025 (500 Tender with discount). The mount appeared in the rotation twice over more than two years — the exact frequency is not guaranteed.
