Swift Gray Steed
Overview

Swift Gray Steed is an epic ground mount added to World of Warcraft in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion (patch 3.1.2). It is a large gray-steel warhorse clad in plate armor bearing the heraldry of Stormwind. The mount journal notes that this steed is a veteran of the fiercest battles of the Argent Vanguard.
The mount is purchased from Corporal Arthur Flew, the Stormwind quartermaster at the Argent Tournament grounds in Icecrown. To buy it you need the Champion of Stormwind title and 5 Champion's Seals plus 500 gold.
Why you want this mount
- Unique horse model — the Swift Gray Steed sports a rare gray-steel coloring with plate armor that differs from standard Stormwind steeds. The model is used by only a handful of Argent Tournament mounts
- Argent Tournament collection — one of several mounts available for Champion's Seals. Mount collectors sooner or later come to the tournament to assemble the full set
- Guaranteed acquisition — unlike low drop-chance mounts, you purchase this steed for a fixed price. All you need is time to grind reputation and complete daily quests
- Account-wide availability — once learned, the mount appears in the collection of all your characters. Buying it on an Alliance character also unlocks the
Swift Burgundy Wolf for Horde characters - Inexpensive purchase — just 5 Champion's Seals and 500 gold, significantly cheaper than many other tournament rewards
Prerequisites
Before buying the mount, you need to complete the Argent Tournament quest chain and earn the Champion of Stormwind title.
| Requirement | Details |

| Minimum level | 10 (a formality — at level 90 the content is trivial) |
How to reach the Argent Tournament
The Argent Tournament is located in the northeast of Icecrown in Northrend.
- Get to Dalaran (Northrend). A portal to Dalaran is available in your faction capital — Stormwind or Orgrimmar
- From Dalaran, take the flight master to the Argent Tournament. If the flight point is not unlocked, fly to northern Icecrown yourself
- The tournament grounds are located north of Sindragosa's Fall
How to earn the Champion of Stormwind title
Progression at the Argent Tournament consists of three stages. Each stage requires completing daily quests and collecting special seals.
Stage 1: Aspirant
Speak with Justiciar Mariel at the central tournament tent. She will grant you the rank of Aspirant and unlock the first daily quests.
- Complete Aspirant daily quests to earn Aspirant's Seals
- Collect 15 Aspirant's Seals to advance to the next stage
- This takes roughly 5 days of completing dailies
Stage 2: Valiant
Once you have 15 seals, accept the jousting quest and win it. You will earn the rank of Valiant of Stormwind.
- Complete Valiant daily quests to earn Valor's Seals
- Collect 25 Valor's Seals to advance to the Champion title
- This takes roughly 5 days of completing dailies
Stage 3: Champion
Collect 25 Valor's Seals and complete the final quest — a duel with the champions. After your victory you will become Champion of Stormwind and earn the achievement Champion of Stormwind.
Now you have access to Champion daily quests, which yield Champion's Seals — the currency for buying tournament rewards, including mounts.
Buying the mount
After earning the Champion of Stormwind title:
- Find Corporal Arthur Flew in the Silver Covenant tent on the tournament grounds
- Open the trade window and select
Swift Gray Steed - Pay 5 Champion's Seals and 500 gold
- Use the item — the mount is permanently added to your collection
If your character is not human, the purchase requires Exalted reputation with Stormwind. You can build it up through the
Champion's Writ, which is exchanged for 250 reputation points with any Alliance capital faction.
Farming Champion's Seals
After reaching the Champion title you gain access to daily quests that yield seals. In a single day you can earn between 3 and 5 seals depending on how many factions you have become a champion for.
Champion daily quests
- Among the Champions — kill 15 Cultists of the Damned in Icecrown
- Doing Your Part — destroy 3 Scourge commanders
- The Battle Before the Citadel — defeat 3 Scourge champions in a joust by the citadel walls
- Taking Battle to the Enemy — deliver specific items from the battlefield
Each quest yields 1 Champion's Seal. To buy the Swift Gray Steed you only need 5 seals — that is 1-2 days of daily quests.
Additional seal sources
- Trial of the Champion (heroic mode) — a dungeon on the Argent Tournament grounds that yields additional seals
- Quests for other factions — once you are Champion of Stormwind, you can become a Valiant for the other Alliance capitals (Darnassus, the Exodar, Ironforge, Gnomeregan) and earn additional seals for it
Tips
1
Total progression to purchase — from your first visit to the tournament to buying the steed takes roughly 10-12 days of daily quests: 5 days for the Aspirant rank, 5 days for Valiant, and 1-2 days to earn 5 Champion's Seals
2
Become a Crusader — if you plan to collect all the tournament mounts, become a champion of all five Alliance capitals. This unlocks the "Crusader" title and additional daily quests with increased seal rewards
3
At level 90 everything is trivial — the jousts and combat quests on the tournament grounds pose no challenge for a max-level character. The only constraint is the time gate: daily quests reset once per day
4
Stormwind reputation — if your character is not human, equip the
Stormwind Tabard and run a few dungeons for quick reputation gains up to Exalted.
5
Combine with pet and toy farming — battle pets and toys are sold for Champion's Seals on the tournament grounds. While doing dailies for the steed, stockpile seals for the other rewards too
