Overview

Tanglewood Thorn

Game iconTanglewood Thorn is a one-handed dagger of blue quality, added to World of Warcraft with the release of the Shadowlands expansion. It is a short blade from the shared weapon series for the Shadowlands dungeons: a blade with a muted natural hue and a hilt that looks as if it were woven from bark and stems. The model fits well into "woodland" and druidic looks, which is why the dagger is prized by transmog collectors assembling naturalistic sets.

The dagger is geared toward classes that rely on agility: the appearance can be obtained by a rogue, a demon hunter, or a monk with a suitable specialization. The slot is a one-handed weapon, so the blade works in both the main hand and the off-hand.

For the transmogrification collection, only the visual model matters: once the appearance is added to your collection, the dagger can be applied to any one-handed weapon of the corresponding type. For current Midnight gear the item is of no use — it is outdated content, and it is worth going after purely for the looks.

Source

Tanglewood Thorn drops from the Mistcaller, the second boss of the Mists of Tirna Scithe dungeon. This is one of the eight Shadowlands dungeons, located in Ardenweald.

  • The dagger drops on Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties, including the Mythic Keystone mode.
  • The drop chance is standard for blue loot from Shadowlands dungeon bosses. The exact number depends on the makeup of the Mistcaller's loot table at the specific difficulty.
  • The dungeon is easily cleared solo: at level 90 a character clears Shadowlands content solo without any preparation.
  • There is no attempt limit — you are allowed to rerun the dungeon as many times as needed until the appearance drops.

Reaching the boss is not difficult. The entrance to Mists of Tirna Scithe is in the west of Ardenweald; the fastest way to get there is through the Dungeon Finder — the game teleports the group to the entrance automatically. The Mistcaller comes second in order: first you have to defeat Ingra Maloch, and only then does the path to the misty fork with the boss open up.

The fight itself includes the "Guessing Game" mini-phases, in which you must identify the single odd-one-out illusory double. For solo farming this is a formality: on a current-level character the boss dies within a few seconds, before it can even start the mechanic.

Alternatives

The icon and the 3D model of the Tanglewood Thorn belong to the shared Shadowlands dungeon weapon series. This series has color variants with the same silhouette but a different paint job — they drop from bosses of other Shadowlands dungeons.

If you want exactly the "woodland" green-brown look, the Tanglewood Thorn itself is the closest match. The bone variant — the Fleshcrafter's Knife — drops from Xav the Unfallen in the Theater of Pain dungeon and suits those who need a darker palette for necromantic sets.

Who It Suits Visually

  • Suits druidic looks: the muted green-brown blade harmonizes with Ardenweald leather sets and leafy color schemes.
  • For rogues running a "woodland" set: a paired set of two Tanglewood Thorns in both hands gives a cohesive naturalistic silhouette.
  • With cloth and leather armor sets in earthy tones — the dagger does not clash with the palette and emphasizes the "druidic" theme.
  • Harmonizes with other Ardenweald dungeon appearances from the Shadowlands expansion — they are styled in the same woodland palette.
  • Contrasts with bright plate armor — a debatable but expressive pairing of a "living" blade with heavy armor.

Tips

1

For fast farming, take a level 90 character: a Shadowlands dungeon is cleared solo without preparation and is finished within a few minutes.

2

The optimal mode is Normal: it clears the dungeon the fastest, and difficulty does not affect the dagger's appearance itself.

3

If the appearance did not drop — leave the dungeon and re-enter through the Dungeon Finder; this is faster than resetting progress manually.

4

A class with high mobility (druid, demon hunter, rogue) runs Mists of Tirna Scithe faster thanks to movement speed between bosses.

5

The Mistcaller is second: the first boss, Ingra Maloch, has to be killed every run — you cannot skip it.

6

In a single run you can collect several weapon and armor appearances from this dungeon at once — check all the loot, not just the dagger.

7

The appearance is account-bound: it is enough to obtain the Tanglewood Thorn once on any character with a suitable specialization, after which it becomes available for transmogrification to all the heroes on the account.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
