Tarnished Dawnlit Knife — Transmog Set Guide

Overview

Tarnished Dawnlit Knife is a one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with the release of the Midnight expansion. It is a light blade with a narrow curved edge and a hilt decorated with elven engraving in the spirit of Silvermoon aesthetics — warm golden tones wrapped in dawn-themed runes.

The dagger belongs to the Dawnlit weapon set — a series of identically styled blades, axes, swords and maces that drop from creatures in Eversong Woods. The word "tarnished" in the name sets the mood: this is not a ceremonial weapon but a battle-worn trophy whose gilding has long since worn away.

In terms of game stats, it is an item level 237 piece with the Adventurer upgrade track and a character level requirement of 90. For transmog, what matters is not the stats but the appearance — the recognizable dagger silhouette with a warm golden-amber palette.

Source

The dagger drops from the Ragefire Phytosaur — an elite creature of the devilsaur family that inhabits Eversong Woods. The zone belongs to the Midnight expansion and is designed for characters of levels 80–83.

  • The Ragefire Phytosaur is found in the Lightbloom Lash'ra area, in the southeastern part of Eversong Woods — roughly around coordinates 61, 56.
  • The creature is the objective of the quest Light Will Find a Way, which requires killing three Ragefire Phytosaurs. Completing the quest is the most reliable way to guarantee that you engage the right opponent several times in a row.
  • It is an elite opponent of levels 80–90, so it is comfortable to kill solo on a max-level character in combat gear. At lower levels it is better to take it on in a group.
  • The dagger is part of the creature's regular loot — there is no separate attempt limit, so you can keep returning to the spawn point until the item drops.
  • The Phytosaur is available to hunters for taming, so do not be surprised by competition at the spawn point.

The Ragefire Phytosaur is not among the rare creatures for the Bloodsong achievement — it is a standalone elite opponent tied to a quest. Therefore farming the dagger does not overlap with completing the zone achievement, and you can do it separately, at a convenient time.

Alternatives

The dagger is just one piece of the Dawnlit weapon set. If you like the design, the rest of the items in the series repeat the same golden-amber engraving on other weapon types:

Item Weapon Type Wowhead
Tarnished Dawnlit Cleaver One-Handed Axe item=258945
Tarnished Dawnlit Hatchet One-Handed Axe item=258944
Tarnished Dawnlit Mace One-Handed Mace item=258949
Tarnished Dawnlit Shortsword One-Handed Sword item=258951
Tarnished Dawnlit Longsword One-Handed Sword item=258952
Tarnished Dawnlit Blade Two-Handed Sword item=258959
Tarnished Dawnlit War Blade Warglaive item=258962
Tarnished Dawnlit Beacon Off Hand item=258960

The dagger has no recolor of its own in a different color scheme — the Dawnlit set is designed in a single warm palette. If you need a narrow blade with a similar silhouette, take a look at other daggers with elven engraving from the Silvermoon zones.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It looks good in sets with a warm golden-amber palette — for example, with plate and mail sets of high elves and blood elves.
  • It suits looks tied to the Silvermoon and dawn theme: gold, white marble, amber.
  • It pairs with the warglaive from the same set — the Tarnished Dawnlit War Blade — for specializations that wield two blades.
  • It looks striking against dark or cold armor (blue, purple, dark-gray tones) — a debatable but expressive approach if you want to accentuate the weapon.
  • A good choice for light, agile rogue or feral druid looks, where a compact dagger does not overload the character's silhouette.

Tips

1

Pick up the quest Light Will Find a Way before farming — the need to kill three Phytosaurs naturally gives you several attempts at the dagger drop.

2

Creature spawn points in Midnight have a noticeable respawn time, so it is more efficient not to stand still but to move in a circle around Lightbloom Lash'ra, killing other opponents along the way.

3

On a max-level character the elite Phytosaur can be killed solo, but at lower levels bring a companion or join a group right at the spawn point.

4

The dagger is bind-on-equip, so spare copies from leveling characters can be passed on or sold — the appearance is still saved in your collection after the first acquisition.

5

If you want to collect the entire Dawnlit set, the other weapon types drop from other creatures in Eversong Woods — sweep the zone with rare and elite tracking enabled.

6

Hunters should keep competition in mind: the Ragefire Phytosaur can be tamed, so other players may intercept it at the spawn point.

7

The appearance is unlocked in the transmog collection as soon as the item enters your bags — you do not have to equip the dagger for this.
