Overview

Tawny Riding Talbuk (Horde)

Game iconReins of the Tawny Riding Talbuk is a ground mount added in The Burning Crusade expansion. Talbuks are graceful herbivores that inhabit the plains of Nagrand in Outland. The orcs have tamed them since ancient times and used them as mounts. The tawny riding talbuk has a distinctive warm brownish-tawny coat and curved horns.

This mount is sold by the quartermaster of the Mag'har faction and is available only to Horde characters. To purchase it, you must reach Exalted reputation. An identical talbuk for the Alliance is sold by the quartermaster of the Kurenai faction — that is a Game icondifferent item with the same appearance.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Talbuk collectionProvisioner Nasela sells eight talbuks: four riding and four war talbuks. By grinding reputation to Exalted once, you gain access to all eight mounts at once.
  • Unique model — talbuks look visually distinct from any other mount in the game. They resemble large antelopes with massive horns, and they still look striking today.
  • Quick to obtain — unlike drop mounts, there's no element of chance here. You just need to grind reputation and pay 70 gold.
  • Achievement — upon reaching Exalted with the Mag'har you earn an achievement, and the mounts themselves add to your collection for progress on mount-count achievements.

How to Get to Nagrand

Nagrand is located in the southwestern part of Outland. To get there:

  1. Reach Outland through the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands or via the portal in your faction's capital (Orgrimmar → Shattrath)
  2. From Shattrath, fly southwest to Nagrand
  3. Garadar — the main settlement of the Mag'har — is located in the north of Nagrand

How to Grind Reputation with the Mag'har

Horde characters start at Unfriendly reputation. The overall path to Exalted involves three stages: quests, killing ogres, and turning in Game iconobsidian warbeads.

Stage 1: From Unfriendly to Neutral

At this stage, only quests in Hellfire Peninsula are available. Find and complete the quest chain related to the Mag'har, which begins with a task about murderer orcs. This series of tasks will raise your reputation to Neutral and unlock access to quests in Nagrand.

Stage 2: Quests in Nagrand

After reaching Neutral, head to Garadar and pick up all available quests. The quests in Nagrand grant a total of around 20,000–21,000 reputation points, which will bring you roughly to Honored.

Key quests:

  • The quest chain from Garrosh — a large series with a good reputation reward
  • Quests to help various Mag'har outposts
  • Quests to fight ogres and the Burning Blade clan

Stage 3: Farming Ogres and Turning In Beads

After completing all quests, gain the remaining reputation by killing ogres and turning in Game iconobsidian warbeads.

Killing ogres:

  • Each ogre killed in Nagrand grants +10 reputation with the Mag'har
  • Ogres are found throughout the zone, but the densest concentration is at Warmaul Hill in the northwestern part of Nagrand

Turning in obsidian warbeads:

  • The beads drop from killed ogres (about a 35–40% chance)
  • Collect 10 at a time and turn them in to Warden Bullrok in Garadar for the quest Warbeads!
  • Each turn-in of 10 beads grants +500 reputation
  • To grind from Honored to Exalted you'll need roughly 250–300 beads

Time Estimate

At max level (80 in The War Within), ogres in Nagrand die instantly. The entire reputation grind from Unfriendly to Exalted takes 3–5 hours:

  • ~30 minutes for quests in Hellfire Peninsula
  • ~1–2 hours for quests in Nagrand
  • ~1–2 hours for finishing off reputation by farming ogres

All Mag'har Talbuks

Upon reaching Exalted, all eight talbuks become available to you. If you've already spent the time on reputation, it makes sense to buy them all and fill out your collection.

Dark Talbuks (PvP, Halaa)

Two additional talbuks can be acquired for Halaa PvP tokens when your faction controls that settlement in the center of Nagrand. They require no reputation with the Mag'har — only Halaa Battle Tokens and Research Tokens.

Tips

1

Buy all eight at once — since you've reached Exalted, spend 680 gold and grab the entire collection. You won't want to grind this reputation again.

2

Combine with Nagrand achievements — while you're questing, keep an eye on the zone's achievements: exploration, quests, and rare mobs.

3

Alliance is a different faction — if you have an Alliance character, identical talbuks are sold by Trader Narasu in Telaar for reputation with the Kurenai

4

Don't confuse them with the Mag'har from Battle for Azeroth — the Mag'har orc allied race and the Mag'har faction from Outland are different things. The talbuks are tied to the old faction from The Burning Crusade.

5

Farming ogres is doubly profitable — besides reputation, ogres in Nagrand fill your bags nicely with various junk to sell and drop inv_jewelry_necklace_19obsidian warbeads, which can also be turned in to the Consortium to level a second reputation in parallel.
