Tunk's Needle — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Tunk's Needle is a rare-quality one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft alongside the Shadowlands expansion (patch 9.0.1) and the revamped starting experience on Exile's Reach. It is a narrow, slender blade built on a Draenor-era model: the item's appearance uses the same base as the daggers from Warlords of Draenor quests, with a cold metallic blade and a plain hilt free of ornate decoration.
The dagger is available to every class that can wield this weapon — rogues, druids, priests, mages, warlocks and demon hunters. The blade is named after the ogron Tunk, the first boss of the Darkmaul Citadel dungeon: in the Exile's Reach storyline this is exactly the foe from whom the hero takes the "needle." Despite its modest item level, the appearance is prized by collectors as a clean, understated workhorse dagger that fits easily into practical outfits.
Source
Tunk's Needle drops from Tunk — an elite ogron boss in the Darkmaul Citadel dungeon. This is a short story-driven dungeon for four players, built into the starting zone Exile's Reach.
Key farming details:
- The chance to get the dagger from Tunk is around 20%, one of the highest rates among his loot.
- The dungeon is designed for levels 7-10 and is run by a group of four characters; story-wise the newcomer is accompanied by NPC companions filling the tank and healer roles.
- Tunk is the first of the dungeon's two bosses; for the dagger appearance it is enough to kill only him, and reaching the second boss is not required.
- There are no complex mechanics inside the dungeon — this is introductory content for new players, and Tunk goes down quickly.
The main difficulty lies not in the fight itself but in access. Darkmaul Citadel is open only while the character is on Exile's Reach. After completing the introductory storyline and sailing away from the island, there is no way whatsoever to return to the dungeon. For that reason the dagger appearance is best collected on a new character who has not yet left the starting zone.
Who It Suits Visually
- Suits practical, "down-to-earth" outfits with no magical glow — the dagger is purely metallic, with no effects.
- Harmonizes with leather sets in a brown-and-gray palette: the appearance does not draw attention to itself and works as a complement to the armor.
- Pairs with a matching weapon from the same Tunk line — for example,
Tunk's Tooth in one hand and Tunk's Needle in the other give a coordinated set of blades. - Contrasts with heavy plate sets: a light, slender blade in a plate-wearer's hands looks pointedly mundane — a debatable but recognizable choice.
- Fits the look of a mercenary, hunter or ranger, where the functionality of the appearance matters more than its shine.
Tips
Collect the appearance on a new character before finishing the Exile's Reach storyline — once you sail away, the dungeon closes forever.
If the dagger does not drop the first time, the dungeon can be run again while the character remains on the island — re-entry is allowed.
In a single Tunk run it is worth farming his entire weapon line at once: the sword, both maces, the polearm, the bow and the shield share the same rare appearance.
Exile's Reach is available to characters of both factions, so the appearance can be collected on either Alliance or Horde.
The dungeon is short and requires no preparation: it is enough to reach Tunk and kill him, with no complex mechanics in the fight.
The dagger appearance binds to the account's appearance collection — earning it on one character unlocks it for all of your heroes.
Plan the trip ahead: if you have already completed the starting zone on every character, the only way to get the appearance is to create a new hero.
