WoW Forever: Protection Warrior
About the Class
The Protection Warrior is a tank with a one-handed weapon and a shield. It holds enemies with
Shield Slam,
Revenge, and
Sunder Armor. Blocks, dodges, and parries help generate Rage and unlock retaliatory attacks.
In Forever, the shield became the core of a self-sufficient spec:
Shield Specialization grants Rage on blocks,
Master of Defense on dodges and parries, and
Focused Rage lowers the cost of your attacks. The tank performs better when enemies are actually attacking it. Without incoming attacks, you'll have less Rage and fewer retaliatory strikes available.
Strengths
- Strong physical mitigation with a shield.
- Cheap retaliatory attacks and reliable threat tools.
Shield Wall and
Last Stand help you survive dangerous moments.
Shield Bash lets you interrupt spells in Defensive Stance.- Well suited for dungeons and solo leveling with a shield.
Weaknesses
- Holding a pack requires swapping targets and managing threat on each of them.
- Without attacks aimed at you, your Rage generation drops.
Thunder Clap hits no more than four targets.- Blocking doesn't solve every problem with magic damage and unblockable attacks.

For Reliable Threat:
Against a level 63 boss, a weapon-and-shield setup needs 8% Hit to eliminate misses on normal and special attacks. Expertise that reduces dodge chance by 6.5% eliminates dodges. When attacking from the front, the enemy can also parry; fully eliminating parries requires a separate, higher value. Don't sacrifice the survivability you need for it.
Stamina helps against both physical and magic damage, armor against physical. Agility provides armor, dodge, and critical strike chance. Block Value boosts
Shield Slam, and Attack Power increases the damage of retaliatory attacks and the threat from
Sunder Armor. Build your set around the specific enemy.

Rotation (Ability Priority)
The opener is a set sequence of abilities you use as you engage an enemy. Memorising it helps initiate your rotation in the most optimal way possible.
- 1
Charge - 2
Defensive Stance - 3
Bloodrage - 4
Shield Block - 5
Revenge
Defensive Stance — your main stance for holding enemies
Bloodrage — Rage for your first abilities
Shield Block — protection against melee attacks and a way to unlock a retaliatory strike
Revenge — use it after a block, dodge, or parry
Thunder Clap — slow enemy attacks and build threat on nearby targets
Demoralizing Shout — keep the Attack Power reduction up when it's needed; don't replace your whole rotation with it
Sunder Armor — stack the armor reduction on a durable target
Heroic Strike — only with spare Rage once your defenses and core attacks are covered
Don't turn your back on attacking enemies: shield defense depends on keeping them in front of you.
Important Abilities
Ability | When It's Useful |
|---|---|
| Main threat and damage that scales with Block Value | |
| Cheap attack after a block, dodge, or parry | |
| Protection against the next two qualifying attacks | |
| Pulls back an enemy that's attacking an ally | |
| Interrupt with a shield | |
| Stuns a suitable dangerous target | |
| Major reduction to incoming damage | |
| Temporary extra Health pool |
Shield Block increases block chance by 75% and lasts for up to two blocks or until it expires. Against a pack, both charges can disappear quickly.
Last Stand doesn't reduce damage: the extra Health goes away when the buff ends, so coordinate with your healer.
Best in Slot (BiS)
Enchants, Gems, Consumables
Best Race
Quickness adds dodge and movement speed.
Elune's Light helps you generate extra threat and Rage through critical auto-attacks.
Touch of the Grave provides extra damage and self-healing that scale with your maximum Health. Pick a race based not only on threat but also on how convenient its defensive and utility abilities are.
Best Professions
Mining supplies ore, and
Blacksmithing lets you craft weapons and armor. It's a practical pair for keeping your character self-sufficient if you're willing to gather materials and level the craft.
Engineering gives you extra gadgets and explosives, and
Mining covers some of the materials. This pair is appealing for extra combat tools and PvP. Among secondary professions,
First Aid is useful for bandages and
Cooking for food.
FAQ
Can I level solo as Protection?
Yes. A shield, cheap retaliatory strikes, and Rage from defensive events make this playstyle viable. Keep enemies in front of you and watch your Health between fights.
Why am I low on Rage as the off-tank?
Without attacks aimed at you, many Rage sources don't work and
Revenge becomes available less often. Don't spend your remaining Rage on optional attacks right before you need to pick up the boss.
Should I keep using Sunder Armor after five stacks?
Yes,
Sunder Armor keeps generating threat. Use it between core attacks without delaying
Shield Slam or an available retaliatory strike.
How do I hold more than four enemies?
Thunder Clap doesn't cover a large pack in full. Swap targets, spread your hits, and check threat on the remaining enemies. Don't turn your back to the pack.
Can I gear only for threat stats?
First secure enough Health and defense for the specific dungeon or boss. Then improve hit reliability and damage: high threat won't help you survive in a set that lacks the right defenses.
