Black Skeletal Horse

Overview

Black Skeletal Horse is a racial ground mount of the Forsaken, one of the four basic skeletal horses of Undercity. It is a bony warhorse with coal-black tack, dim greenish eye sockets and tatters of a dark caparison. The item's flavor text reads: "The Forsaken believe that without purpose, even beasts of burden suffer in undeath." The item was added in patch 3.1.0 (Wrath of the Lich King) and has remained in the stock of the sole vendor of Undead racial mounts ever since.

The mount is sold by Zachariah Post, the Forsaken horse breeder. Undead characters buy it freely as long as they have basic riding skill. Members of other Horde races gain access only after reaching Exalted status with the Undercity faction. Alliance players cannot obtain the mount directly, but it can be unlocked through an Undead trial character — once purchased, it appears in the collection of every character on the account.

Why you want this mount

  • Part of the four-horse basic set — together with the Red, Blue and Brown skeletal horses. All four are sold by the same vendor and bought in a single trip.
  • Account-wide — once purchased, the mount appears in the collection of every character, including Alliance. A single Undead or trial character is enough.
  • Achievement progress — counts toward the mount-collection threshold achievements: Leading the Cavalry (100 mounts), We're Going to Need More Saddles (150), Mountacular (200) and higher.
  • Costs just 1 gold — one of the cheapest mounts in the game. For 4 gold you grab all four basic variants at once.
  • Dark coloring for transmog — the black skeletal horse variant pairs especially well with dark sets of death knights, warlocks and shadow priests.

Where to find Zachariah Post

The vendor is located in Tirisfal Glades, next to the Ruins of Lordaeron — the restored capital of the Forsaken. After the events of Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands, the Undead returned to their lands and moved their main services to the ruins.

The current position is the northeastern corner of the Ruins of Lordaeron, in a small tent next to other faction vendors.

If the vendor isn't visible

After the story events of Battle for Azeroth, the landscape of Tirisfal Glades is split into temporary phases. If you fly into the zone and see a bombed-out Brill without a single vendor, walk up to Zidormi and ask to be moved into the current time phase.

After talking to Zidormi the area updates to its modern state, and Zachariah Post appears in the tent.

How to obtain

Method 1: Undead character (fastest)

  1. Log onto an Undead character of any level 10 or higher
  2. Make sure the "Apprentice Riding" skill is learned — it unlocks automatically at level 10
  3. Head to Tirisfal Glades. From Orgrimmar it's most convenient to use the portal to the Ruins of Lordaeron or fly there on a mount
  4. Find Zachariah Post at the coordinates above and buy the Black Skeletal Horse for 1 gold
  5. Use the item — the mount is added permanently to the collection of all characters on the account

Method 2: Undead trial character (if you have no Undead)

This is the fastest option for players who don't have a single Undead character. A trial character is created instantly and already has riding skill.

  1. On the character select screen, click "Create Trial Character"
  2. Choose the Undead race and any class (for example, mage or priest)
  3. The character appears with basic gear and a small amount of gold — enough to buy all four basic skeletal horses
  4. Fly to the Ruins of Lordaeron and buy the Black Skeletal Horse, along with the other three colors
  5. The mounts unlock instantly across the entire account. The trial character can be deleted — the mounts remain

Method 3: Undercity reputation (for other Horde races)

If you play an orc, troll, tauren, blood elf or another Horde race and don't want to make a trial, you'll have to grind Exalted with the Undercity faction.

  1. Buy the Undercity Tabard from quartermaster Captain Donald Adams in the Ruins of Lordaeron
  2. Wear the tabard and run dungeons on Heroic difficulty — reputation is awarded for killing mobs and bosses
  3. Additional reputation comes from holiday events: the Darkmoon Faire, the World of Warcraft anniversary, Hallow's End
  4. In terms of time, this method is far inferior to creating a trial character and is only worthwhile if you need the reputation itself for other Undercity rewards

Tips

1

Buy all four basic colors at once. For 4 gold you get four mounts in your collection — one of the most cost-effective ways to grow your counter for achievements.

2

A trial character saves hours. Instead of grinding Undercity reputation, create an Undead trial character, buy all the horses and delete it. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes.

3

Check the phase with Zidormi. If you can't see the vendor on your first visit, it's almost always a mismatched time phase. A single chat with Zidormi solves the problem.

4

Drop by other racial vendors along the way. Similar cheap mounts are sold by the orc, troll, tauren and blood elf vendors. Many collectors do a "run" of all the racial spots in a single session and gather dozens of mounts.

5

The epic variants are worth attention too. If you're already at Zachariah Post and your riding skill allows it, also grab the green, purple and brown skeletal warhorses. In total you can get seven mounts from one vendor.

6

The mount is permanent. Even if you delete the character who made the purchase, the mount won't disappear — it's bound to the account, not the character.
