Black War Elekk

Overview

Black War Elekk is a ground PvP mount of the Alliance faction, added to the game in The Burning Crusade expansion (patch 2.4.0) as a combat version of the draenei elekk for players taking part in PvP activities. It is a massive elekk in black battle armor with spiked plates and a dark caparison, noticeably larger than ordinary draenei mounts. Among all the Alliance racial PvP mounts, the elekk stands out with its imposing size and characteristic heavy gait.

In the modern game the mount is sold for 15 Honor Tokens by Lieutenant Karter — the riding mount quartermaster by the Champions' Hall in Stormwind. No PvP rank, title or reputation with the battleground factions is required: any Alliance character who accumulates 15 tokens in battles gains access to the purchase. On patch 11.1 of The War Within the mount is fully current and remains one of the most accessible ways to complete the collection of "black war" racial Alliance mounts.

Why you want this mount

  • Completing the "Black War" Alliance mount set — together with the Black War Steed, the Black War Ram and others, the elekk is part of the classic set of PvP mounts for the Alliance races. All five are sold by the same vendor at the same price
  • A unique model among elekks — unlike the ordinary draenei elekks from the Exodar, the war version is larger, colored black with dark armor and spiked inserts. In appearance and animation it is a fundamentally different mount that cannot be obtained through quests or draenei reputation
  • The largest ground mount from the PvP set — the elekk is noticeably bigger than the ram, the mechanostrider and the tiger. If you like massive mounts, this one will draw attention in any crowd
  • A cheap way to push mount-count achievements — 15 Honor Tokens are farmed in a few wins in random battlegrounds or one epic battle. The purchase advances progress in "Cataclysmically Devastating", "Leading the Cavalry" and other meta-achievements based on the number of mounts
  • Account-wide access — after using the item, the mount enters the shared journal and unlocks for all Alliance characters on the account, regardless of class and race

Since patch 7.0 (Legion) the old grind of marks of individual battlegrounds was removed from the game, and all PvP mounts of this kind were switched to a single Honor Tokens currency. Separate marks of Alterac Valley, Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin are no longer needed to buy the elekk. The elekk was the last mount added to this set — it appeared later than the other four, together with the draenei race in The Burning Crusade.

How to reach Lieutenant Karter

Lieutenant Karter stands at the entrance to the Champions' Hall in the Old Town of Stormwind. This is the same courtyard where PvP quests are handed out and the battleground quartermasters and arena organizers stand.

Route to the vendor

  1. Teleport to Stormwind via a hearthstone, a portal from any major hub of The War Within, or via the main portal from Valdrakken and Dornogal
  2. Move from the Mage Quarter or the Trade District toward the Old Town — it is located northeast of the center of Stormwind
  3. The Champions' Hall is in the eastern part of the Old Town, its entrance decorated with Alliance banners and guards
  4. Lieutenant Karter stands right in front of the doors of the Champions' Hall, on an open square next to the other PvP quartermasters
  5. Coordinates for the navigator:
/way #1519 76.2 65.4 Lieutenant Karter — PvP mounts

If your character is Horde

The mount is bound to the Alliance and cannot be bought on a Horde character. The only way for a Horde player to get this elekk is to create or transfer a character to the Alliance side, buy the mount there and use it through the shared journal of allied Alliance characters. On a Horde character the mount will not appear in the journal.

How to get Honor Tokens

Honor Tokens are the single PvP currency, introduced in patch 7.0 together with Legion and still current. At level 80 in The War Within they can be earned in practically any PvP activity.

Main sources

  • Regular battlegrounds — for a win you get a reward chest that is guaranteed to contain Honor Tokens. A loss also brings a reduced number of tokens. The fastest and shortest battlegrounds are Warsong Gulch and the Temple of Kotmogu
  • Epic battlegrounds — Alterac Valley, the Isle of Conquest and the epic Warsong Gulch give more tokens for a win, but take longer. They are optimal if you are farming several PvP-vendor mounts at once
  • 2v2 and 3v3 arenas in Skirmish mode — unrated arenas give a few Honor Tokens for each win and do not require an assembled team
  • Rated arenas and battlegrounds — give an increased number of Honor Tokens plus Conquest Points if you are also climbing the PvP season
  • Weekly PvP quests in Stormwind — handed out by the local PvP quartermasters near the Champions' Hall. The reward is small, but it is convenient to pick up on the way to Lieutenant Karter herself

How much time it takes

With active play, 15 tokens are gathered in roughly 40–60 minutes:

  • 3–5 wins in regular battlegrounds of 10–15 minutes each
  • Or 1–2 wins in the epic Alterac Valley
  • Or 8–10 wins in skirmish arenas

If the goal is to collect all five "Black War" mounts from Lieutenant Karter at once, set aside 75 tokens and 3–5 hours of meaningful PvP farming.

Buying the mount

  1. Walk right up to Lieutenant Karter by the Champions' Hall
  2. Right-click to open the trade window
  3. Make sure your bag holds at least 15 Honor Tokens
  4. Find the Black War Elekk in the list of goods and confirm the purchase
  5. Open the item with a right-click — the mount spell is automatically added to the collection, and the elekk becomes available to all Alliance characters on the account
  6. If you do not yet have the "Apprentice Riding" skill, you can learn it from any riding trainer in the Alliance capitals

What else is worth buying from the same vendor

Lieutenant Karter trades the full set of "Black War" racial Alliance mounts. The prices and conditions are the same — 15 Honor Tokens, no requirements for reputation or rank:

Mount Item
Black War Elekk Black War Elekk
Black War Ram Black War Ram
Black War Steed Reins of the Black War Steed
Black War Tiger Black War Tiger
Black War Mechanostrider Black War Mechanostrider

It is optimal to spend a single visit to the vendor on the whole set — this completes five entries in the mount collection and advances all the related achievements at once.

Tips

1

Grab the mount right after your first battleground wins — 15 tokens accumulate quickly, and the purchase completes an achievement and immediately gives a mount you can use as early as level 10. Don't put it off for "someday later."

2

Farm tokens in epic battlegrounds if you need several mounts — the epic Alterac Valley and the Isle of Conquest give noticeably more tokens per run, and the long matches are offset by the fact that you simultaneously progress achievements and the PvP season.

3

Don't confuse the war elekk with the ordinary draenei one — the game has standard elekks sold for gold in the Exodar, and separately the Black War Elekk from the PvP vendor. These are different items and different models, and they cannot be used as substitutes for each other.

4

Buy the whole set from Lieutenant Karter at once — the five racial "Black War" mounts cost only 75 Honor Tokens. This is one of the cheapest ways to quickly add five lines to the mount counter and complete the meta-achievements based on their number.

5

Keep a reserve of Honor Tokens on hand — tokens are also needed for transmog sets of old PvP seasons and relics. An extra 20–30 tokens in the bag will speed up any subsequent purchase.

6

Status in The War Within — the elekk and the vendor have not changed since patch 7.0. As of patch 11.1 the mount is fully available, remains the most massive Alliance PvP mount from the historic set, and requires neither ranks nor reputation. There have been no announcements about removal or price changes.
