Reins of the Black War Tiger
Overview

Reins of the Black War Tiger is an epic ground mount that was added all the way back in patch 1.4. It is one of the Alliance faction's classic PvP mounts, taking the form of a massive nightsaber clad in black battle armor. The mount is purchased from Lieutenant Karter in Stormwind for 15
Marks of Honor.
The Black War Tiger is a night elf racial mount draped in dark, spiked armor. Historically this mount symbolized dedication to PvP combat, and it remains one of the most recognizable battle mounts of the Alliance to this day.
Why You Want This Mount
- Easy to obtain — unlike mounts with a percentage drop chance, the Black War Tiger is bought from a vendor. Save up enough Marks of Honor and the mount is yours
- Classic PvP status — this mount appeared in the early versions of the game and is still recognized by veterans. It used to require a high PvP rank to purchase, but there is no rank requirement anymore
- Quick to farm — 15 Marks of Honor can be earned over a few evenings of active play on the battlegrounds
- Available to all characters — once learned, the mount becomes available on every character on your account
- Unique model — the black war paint and spiked armor set this nightsaber apart from the ordinary night elf racial mounts
How to Obtain
To buy the mount you need to meet a few requirements: belong to the Alliance faction, have a riding skill, and own 15 Marks of Honor.
- Make sure your character belongs to the Alliance faction. This mount is not available to the Horde
- Learn the "Apprentice Riding" skill from a trainer (available at level 10)
- Save up 15
Marks of Honor by taking part in PvP activities - Travel to Stormwind and find Lieutenant Karter near the Champions' Hall
- Purchase the
Reins of the Black War Tiger and use the item to learn the mount
Where to Find Lieutenant Karter
Lieutenant Karter is the Alliance faction's PvP mount quartermaster. She is located in Stormwind, near the entrance to the Champions' Hall.
How to Get There
- Get to Stormwind by any convenient means: a portal from the expansion capital, a hearthstone, or a gryphon
- Head to Old Town — the southeastern district of Stormwind
- Find the Champions' Hall — an underground building whose entrance is located in Old Town
- Lieutenant Karter stands outside, next to the entrance to the Champions' Hall

Other Mounts at Lieutenant Karter
In addition to the Black War Tiger, you can purchase the following PvP mounts from Lieutenant Karter for 15 Marks of Honor each:
- Black War Steed
- Black War Ram
- Black Battlestrider
- Black War Elekk
All of these mounts are battle versions of the Alliance racial mounts.
How to Earn Marks of Honor
Marks of Honor are a PvP currency that drops for taking part in various kinds of PvP activities. You will need 15 of them to buy the mount.
Main Sources
- Random battlegrounds — the first win of the day rewards 3–5 Marks of Honor. Subsequent wins give 1–2 marks
- Arena and skirmishes — taking part in arena matches and skirmishes also yields Marks of Honor
- PvP Brawls — special events such as Comp Stomp are particularly efficient for farming. Comp Stomp lets you fight against bots, which significantly speeds up the process
- Weekly PvP quests — reward additional Marks of Honor
- Epic battlegrounds — Alterac Valley, Isle of Conquest, and other epic battlegrounds award Marks of Honor for a win
Farming Tips
- Watch for the battleground bonus week — during this event you receive increased rewards for PvP, which speeds up collecting Marks of Honor
- First win of the day — try to win at least one battleground per day on each character. The first win grants the most Marks of Honor
- Comp Stomp — if this PvP brawl is active, take advantage of it. Fights against bots are quick and almost always end in a win
- Marks of Honor are account-bound — you can farm them on different characters and mail them to the one you need
How Long It Takes
With active play on the battlegrounds, 15 Marks of Honor can be collected in 2–4 days. If you combine the farming with the battleground bonus week or the Comp Stomp event, the process takes even less time.
Tips
1
Check your faction — the mount is only available to Alliance characters. If you play Horde, the equivalent nightsaber PvP mount is not available to you, but the Horde quartermaster has its own battle mounts
2
Two-hour refund — if you accidentally bought the wrong mount, you can return it to the vendor within two hours of purchase
3
Combine with other purchases — if you are farming Marks of Honor, consider buying several PvP mounts from Lieutenant Karter at once. Each one costs 15 marks
4
The mount requires no reputation — unlike the standard racial mounts, buying the Black War Tiger does not require reputation with Darnassus. Any Alliance character can purchase it
5
Riding skill — the basic "Apprentice Riding" skill is enough. Higher skill levels are not required for the purchase, although they affect your character's overall movement speed
