Overview

Blades of the Fallen Prince

Game iconBlades of the Fallen Prince is the Frost Death Knight artifact weapon, available only to that class and that specialization. They are a paired set of one-handed runic blades forged from shards of the legendary sword Frostmourne: in the lore, one blade is named Icebringer and the other Soulreaper. The dark-steel model with its blue runic glow along the edge directly echoes the weapon of the Lich King, which is why the appearance is especially prized for its lore recognizability.

As with all artifacts, its combat value is long gone — the item level is symbolic, and in the modern game the blades are needed purely for their transmogrification appearance. Their collection value, however, is high: artifact models cannot be applied to a different weapon type, and the Blades of the Fallen Prince are available only to the Death Knight.

The weapon was introduced in the Legion expansion as the Frost specialization artifact. Its flavor text is written in the spirit of the grimmest of classes: "I will show you the meaning of fear... and acquaint you with the justice of death."

The blades are granted through a story chain — there is no drop to farm here; you simply have to complete the introductory artifact quest.

  • The starting chain is the quest "The Call of Icecrown", the Death Knight's introductory quest for the Frost specialization artifact. After it, the blades come into your hands and the base appearance unlocks automatically.
  • The weapon itself is available only to the Death Knight class in the Frost specialization — other classes and specializations cannot obtain it.
  • The artifact has several sets of appearances, and each color is unlocked by its own condition — from the base version to the hidden one.
  • The hidden appearance is called the Dark Runeblade and is unlocked by the item Game icon"Runes of the Darkening", which drops from a world boss in Stormheim.
  • One of the prestigious color sets is granted by the "Balance of Power" chain — a long line of quests across the Broken Isles, still available today.

The weapon and its appearances can still be collected in the current game: all you need is to create a Death Knight, take the Frost specialization, and complete the corresponding quests.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It fits perfectly into looks themed around the Scourge and the Lich King — the blue runic glow and dark steel resonate with Icecrown armor.
  • It pairs well with the cold blue-and-black palette of Death Knight armor — sets in frosty tones reinforce the effect.
  • The hidden Dark Runeblade appearance with its dark-red glow suits more sinister looks that contrast with the base icy variant.
  • It is heavily tied to lore: this is a look instantly recognizable as a Death Knight's, so it is rarely paired with "neutral" sets — it sets the theme of the entire look on its own.

Tips

1

To get the weapon at all, you need a Death Knight in the Frost specialization — the artifact is unavailable on other classes.

2

The base appearance unlocks right after the introductory quest, so the minimal version can be picked up very quickly, barely after creating the character.

3

The hidden appearance is most convenient to farm at a high level of artifact knowledge: Runes of the Darkening drop more reliably once the corresponding research in your class hall is leveled up.

4

The "Balance of Power" chain is long, but it can be completed solo at the maximum level of 90 in Midnight; set aside a separate evening for it.

5

The PvP set requires growing your honor level, so it takes longer to assemble than the others — start it early if you want the full collection of color variations.

6

Artifact appearances are bound to the Death Knight character rather than being granted account-wide like ordinary transmog, so you will have to meet the conditions on that character specifically.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
