Bulbous Necroray
Overview

Bulbous Necroray is an epic ground and flying mount added in patch 9.0.1 of the Shadowlands expansion. It is one of the three necrorays of Maldraxxus — enormous flying creatures that dwell among the decaying fungi of the Realm of the Dead. The mount is extracted from the
Oozing Necroray Egg, which matures from the
Necroray Egg after three real-time days.
The Bulbous Necroray stands out with its brownish-orange coloring and a massive, swollen body. The model is based on the mana rays, but it has been visually adapted to the aesthetic of Maldraxxus — with necrotic growths and a distinctive glow. The mount becomes available to every character on the account once it is learned.
Why You Want This Mount
- Unique Maldraxxus aesthetic — the Bulbous Necroray embodies the atmosphere of the Realm of the Dead. It is one of the few mounts with a necrotic theme and the unusual model of a flying ray
- Ground and flying — the mount works both on the ground and in the air, adapting to your riding skill
- A guaranteed mount from the egg — unlike many rare mounts, once you obtain the Oozing Necroray Egg you are guaranteed to receive one of the three necrorays. No duplicates drop, so every egg grants a new mount
- Available to all characters — once learned, the mount becomes available on every character of your account
- Collection value — the set of three necrorays appeals to mount collectors. Obtaining all three is a separate goal for farming enthusiasts
How to Obtain
Obtaining the Bulbous Necroray involves three stages: acquiring the Necroray Egg, waiting for it to mature, and opening the Oozing Egg.
- Complete callings in Maldraxxus. These quests appear in your covenant hub and refresh daily, but callings specifically in Maldraxxus appear roughly once every 4–5 days
- For completing callings in Maldraxxus you receive a
Tribute of the Ambitious or a
Tribute of the Duty-Bound. These containers have a small chance (about 1.5%) to drop a
Necroray Egg - Place the Necroray Egg in your character's bag and wait three real-time days. The egg will automatically turn into an
Oozing Necroray Egg - Open the Oozing Necroray Egg by right-clicking it. You are guaranteed to receive one of the three necrorays: the
Bulbous Necroray, the
Infested Necroray, or the
Pestilent Necroray - Use the item you receive to learn the mount
Maldraxxus Callings
Callings are daily quests that appear in your covenant hub in the Shadowlands. Up to three callings are active at once, and a new one appears each day.
Which Callings You Need
You need callings tied to Maldraxxus and the Undying Army faction. Such quests usually require completing world quests in Maldraxxus, killing rare enemies, or gathering resources in the zone.
For completing these callings you receive one of two containers:
Tribute of the Ambitious — the reward for standard callings in Maldraxxus
Tribute of the Duty-Bound — the reward for more difficult callings
Both containers contain gold, gear, consumables, and a small chance at a Necroray Egg.
How Often They Appear
Callings in Maldraxxus appear roughly once every 4–5 days. This means you will have an average of 6–7 chances to get the egg per month on a single character.
Egg Hatching Mechanic
After obtaining the Necroray Egg, the mechanic works as follows:
- The Necroray Egg sits in your character's bag for exactly three real-time days. The countdown runs continuously, even while you are offline
- After three days the egg automatically turns into an Oozing Necroray Egg
- Open the Oozing Egg — one of the three necrorays hatches from it
- The system does not hand out duplicates: if you already have one necroray, the next egg gives a different one. After you have obtained all three necrorays, the eggs will instead drop
Gilded Slime
If you receive a second egg while the first is already in your bag, it will be sent to you by mail through the courier.
Farm Optimization
Multiple Characters
The most efficient way to speed up getting the egg is to complete Maldraxxus callings on several characters. Each character receives its own container with an independent chance at the egg. The mount is account-bound, so it does not matter which character you learn it on.
Daily Plan
- Check the available callings every time you log in
- If a Maldraxxus calling is available, complete it first
- At the current max level, all quests in Maldraxxus are finished in a matter of minutes
- Open the container you receive and check whether it holds a Necroray Egg
How Long It Takes
With a drop chance of about 1.5% and callings appearing once every 4–5 days, getting the first egg on a single character can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Using multiple characters significantly shortens this time. After obtaining the egg you must wait another three days for it to mature.
In patch 10.2.7 the drop chance of the Necroray Egg was increased, which noticeably eased the farm.
The Covenant Does Not Matter
Maldraxxus callings are available to characters of any covenant, not only Necrolords. You can complete these quests regardless of the covenant you have chosen.
All Necrorays of Maldraxxus
From the Oozing Necroray Egg you can obtain one of three mounts:
| Mount | Coloring | Item ID |
|---|---|---|
| Brownish-orange | 184160 | |
| Dark (black) | 184161 | |
| Greenish-black | 184162 |
Each egg is guaranteed to give a new necroray until you have collected all three. After that, the eggs will start dropping Gilded Slime.
Tips
Watch the callings daily — callings refresh every day, and a missed Maldraxxus calling means a lost chance at the egg. Log in at least to check the calling list.
Use multiple characters — this is the most reliable way to speed up the farm.
Do not throw away the egg — the Necroray Egg must sit in your character's bag for three full days. Do not sell or destroy it, or you will have to start over.
The egg matures offline — you do not need to be in the game while the egg matures. The three-day countdown runs continuously from the moment you receive it.
Check your mail — if a second egg dropped while the first was already in your bag, it will arrive by mail.
Patch 10.2.7 increased the odds — if you tried to get the egg earlier and gave up, give it another shot.
The mount is available account-wide — farm on whichever character is most convenient.
