Chestnut Mare

Chestnut Mare is the basic ground mount of the humans of Stormwind, added all the way back in the original World of Warcraft. It is a sturdy chestnut horse with a practical harness. Visually the mount looks like an ordinary working horse, and that is its charm — no flashy armor or magical flames, just a reliable steed that carried the kingdom's first knights and militiamen.

The bridle is still an easily accessible purchase for humans and a way to tick off one of the "checkboxes" in the mount collection for players of the other Alliance races. At max level 90 the horse is not impressive in terms of speed compared to skyriding, but it does count toward achievements for the number of mounts collected.

• +1 to your mount collection — the mare counts toward achievements that grant separate rewards
• Account-wide — after buying it on one character the mount unlocks across your entire account collection, and other Alliance alts with the riding skill can use it
• Human racial mount — human characters get this horse with no reputation requirements, making it one of the fastest purchases for a new human character
• Tiny price — 1 gold for a mount that in 2026 you can earn in a couple of minutes at max level
• One of four classic Stormwind horses — all four are sold by the same vendors, so you complete a whole set in a single run
• Classic look — in an era of dragons and mechanical camels, an ordinary chestnut mare looks atmospheric and fitting on roleplay servers and in screenshots

The item is sold by four Alliance horse-breeder vendors. They all offer the same selection of four basic bridles and three epic steeds. The cost depends on your reputation with Stormwind: at "friendly" status and above a faction discount kicks in, turning 1 gold into 80 silver.

Katie Stokes — Stormwind, Old Town

The most convenient option for most players. Katie Stokes stands by the stable next to the SI:7 headquarters in Old Town, a few steps from the stone bridge leading to the Trade District.

If you have a human character or have raised your reputation with Stormwind, fly straight here. Old Town is reachable from anywhere in the world via your hearthstone in the capital.

Katie Hunter — Elwynn Forest, Eastvale Logging Camp

The first historical human horse vendor. She stands in the corral of the Eastvale Logging Camp in the eastern part of Elwynn Forest, next to Supervisor Raelen the Hunter.

Good if you are leveling a new human in the starting zone and don't want to return to Stormwind.

Unger Statforth — Wetlands, Menethil Harbor

The only horse vendor in the Eastern Kingdoms outside the capital. His corral is in the southern part of Menethil Harbor, just past the city gates.

A logical choice if you are leveling an Alliance dwarf or gnome through Dun Morogh and heading into Khaz Modan.

Gregor MacVince — Dustwallow Marsh, Theramore

A vendor on Theramore Isle off the eastern coast of Dustwallow Marsh. You need to fly there via the port at Menethil Harbor or through Kalimdor flight points. This option is only relevant for players who, for whatever reason, are already in southern Kalimdor.

For a human character the purchase takes less than five minutes:

1. Level up to 10
2. Head to Old Town in Stormwind and find Katie Stokes at coordinates 77, 67
3. Buy the Chestnut Mare Bridle for 1 gold
4. Use the item from your bag — the mount unlocks permanently in your collection across the entire account
5. While you're at it, buy the other three horses — you'll add +4 to your mount counter at once

If you play a dwarf, night elf, gnome, draenei, worgen, Alliance pandaren, dracthyr, or any other non-human race, you will need exalted reputation with the Stormwind faction. It is not a quick process, but it can be combined with leveling and collecting other mounts.

1. Check your current standing in the reputation window (default key — U). Stormwind is in the "Eastern Kingdoms" section
2. If you are already exalted, go straight to one of the three vendors and buy the bridle
3. If not, the fastest way to farm reputation in 2026 is to wear the Stormwind Tabard and run classic level 1–60 dungeons. Every mob kill in a dungeon with the tabard grants Stormwind reputation
4. The Deadmines in Westfall and the Stockade beneath the city itself work well — they clear in 3–5 minutes at level 90 and give a solid reputation boost per run
5. An alternative is to complete quests in Elwynn Forest, Westfall and Duskwood on a human alt. Old quests in Chromie Time mode also award Stormwind reputation
6. Once exalted, repeat steps 1–5 from the previous section

• Four mounts in one trip. All three vendors have the same selection, and the total comes to just 4 gold for four horses. If you are building a collection, buy them all at once rather than coming back later
• The mount is account-wide. There's no point buying it on every alt — one purchase unlocks it forever in the collection for all your Alliance characters
• Stormwind horses don't fly. In most modern zones you will still need flying or skyriding skill. The Chestnut Mare is a collection and atmosphere mount, not your everyday means of travel
• Speed scales with your skill. Like most classic ground mounts, the horse gives +60% speed at the basic riding skill and automatically scales to +100% if you have already learned the advanced skill. So at level 90 you lose no speed compared to expensive "fast" horses
• The Stormwind Tabard works even in Midnight. If you go for reputation for the sake of the mount, the tabard still works in classic dungeons. Don't forget to take it off in other raids and dungeons so you don't lose reputation with the faction you need
• If you haven't been to Stormwind in a while. In 11.1 the city hasn't changed dramatically, but due to phasing in some story lines the horse vendors may be temporarily absent. If you don't see Katie Stokes at coordinates 77, 67, check whether you have an active quest that changes the phase of Old Town and complete it
